Evo-devo of Child Growth: The Role of Weaning in the Transition from Infancy to Childhood.

Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr

January 2017

b Pediatric Endocrinology Division, Meyer's Children's Hospital of Haifa, Rambam Medical Center, Rappaport Famility Faculty of Medicine and Research Insititute, Technion , Haifa , Israel.

Homo sapiens are unique in having a life history phase of childhood, which follows infancy, as defined by breastfeeding. This review uses evolutionary life history theory in understanding child growth in a broad evolutionary perspective, using the data and theory of evolutionary predictive adaptive growth-related strategies for transition from infancy to childhood. We have previously shown that a delayed infancy-childhood transition has a lifelong impact on stature.

At birth, lung fluid produced during fetal life must be cleared immediately and efficiently before the first breath takes place, in order for infants to achieve a normal and successful transition from prenatal to postnatal life. Postnatal lung fluid resorption is mediated through activation of airway epithelial sodium channels (ENaC). The observation that ENaC expression is a gestational age-dependent process contributes to our understanding of the development of respiratory distress in both term and preterm infants due to impaired clearing of fluid from their lungs.

The intestine is not considered to be a classic target tissue for insulin. Recent in vitro and in vivo experiments suggest that intestinal as well as systemic effects are observed following oral administration of insulin. Local effects include enhancement of intestinal growth, cell maturation, enzyme expression, gut adaptation after intestinal resection and reduction of intestinal permeability.
