Constructing age-structured matrix population models for all fishes.

PeerJ

January 2025

Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, United States of America.

Matrix population models are essential tools in conservation biology, offering key metrics to guide species management and conservation planning. However, the development of these models is often limited by insufficient life history data, particularly for non-charismatic species. This study addresses this gap by using life history data from FishBase and the FishLife R package, complemented by size-dependent natural mortality estimates, to parameterize age-structured matrix population models applicable to most fish species.

Mechanisms of Keap1/Nrf2 modulation in bacterial infections: implications in persistence and clearance.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Centro Multidisciplinario de Estudios en Biotecnología, Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Morelia, Mexico.

Pathogenic bacteria trigger complex molecular interactions in hosts that are characterized mainly by an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as an inflammation-associated response. To counteract oxidative damage, cells respond through protective mechanisms to promote resistance and avoid tissue damage and infection; among these cellular mechanisms the activation or inhibition of the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is frequently observed. The transcription factor Nrf2 is considered the regulator of several hundred cytoprotective and antioxidant genes.

MoS coatings are used extensively in aerospace and defense applications due to their ultralow friction and high wear resistance. Burnished and resin-bonded MoS coatings are commonly used in these applications due to simplicity in deposition and history of use, despite issues with consistency in coating properties and performance. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) of MoS thin films has emerged as a process alternative in the past 50 years, promising far greater control over film structure and composition but at a greater cost.

Optimisation of the crystallisation process through staggered cooling in a nonvibrating granular system.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Instituto de Ciencias Básicas e Ingeniería, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, 42184, Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, México.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how to optimize the crystallization process of magnetic particles using a 2D system under an oscillating magnetic field.
  • By adjusting the magnetic field's magnitude, researchers control the effective temperature, allowing the system to transition from fluid-like behavior to a crystalline state as the temperature decreases.
  • Switching from linear cooling to a staggered cooling approach significantly reduces the time taken for particles to reach their lowest energy state, thus optimizing the crystallization time.
