Antioxidant PRDX3 gene therapy protects brain cells and prevents neurodegeneration in an animal model of Parkinson's disease.

Neuropeptides

December 2024

Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Facultad de Medicina, Departamento de Histología, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Electronic address:

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's Disease (PD), are a significant global health challenge with no effective therapies to counteract neurodegeneration. Genetic and environmental factors lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in oxidative stress. This stress reduces levels of Peroxiredoxin 3 (PRDX3), a key protein for maintaining ROS balance at the mitochondrial level, increasing the substantia nigra's susceptibility to damage.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating, neuroinflammatory, progressive disease that severely affects human health of young adults. Neuroinflammation (NI) and demyelination, as well as their interactions, are key therapeutic targets to halt or slow disease progression. Potent steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as methylprednisolone (MP) and remyelinating neurosteroids such as allopregnanolone (ALLO) could be co-administered intranasally to enhance their efficacy by providing direct access to the central nervous system (CNS).

Plasma flows with enhanced dynamic pressure, known as magnetosheath jets, are often found downstream of collisionless shocks. As they propagate through the magnetosheath, they interact with the surrounding plasma, shaping its properties, and potentially becoming geoeffective upon reaching the magnetopause. In recent years (since 2016), new research has produced vital results that have significantly enhanced our understanding on many aspects of jets.

December 2024

Department of Health Systems and Population Health, School of Public Health, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, United States.

Organizations exert influence on the implementation of evidence-based practices and other innovations that are independent of the influence of organizations' individual constituents. Despite their influence, nuanced explanations of organizations' influence remain limited in implementation science. Organization theories are uniquely suited to offer insights and explain organizational influences on implementation.

Background: Ventricular diverticula are a rare congenital cardiac disorder presenting with an extremely low incidence. The presence of an apical diverticulum of the right ventricle has been associated with other congenital heart diseases such as tetralogy of Fallot. An important defining characteristic of ventricular diverticula that separates them from aneurysms through imaging techniques, is that they possess myocardial contraction synchronous to the adjacent walls, contributing to the ventricular stroke volume, so they do not usually require surgical treatment.

A Survey of Fatty Acid Content of the Male Reproductive System in Mice Supplemented With Arachidonic Acid.

J Lipids

December 2024

Department of Genetic Engineering, CINVESTAV Irapuato Unit, Km 9.6 Libramiento Norte, Carretera Irapuato-León, Irapuato, Guanajuato 36824, Mexico.

Paternal exposure to high-fat diets or individual fatty acids (FAs) including arachidonic acid (AA) modifies progeny traits by poorly understood mechanisms. Specific male reproductive system FAs may be involved in paternal inheritance, as they can modify a range of cellular components, including the epigenome. Our objective was to determine FAs in compartments of the male reproductive system that potentially affect ejaculate composition-right and left testicular interstitial fluid (TIF), vesicular gland fluid (VGF), and epididymal adipose tissue (EAT)-in mice exposed to AA or vehicle daily for 10 days ( = 9-10/group).

The small airways comprise generations 8 to 23 of the bronchial tree, consist of airways with an internal diameter <2mm, and are classically difficult to assess and treat in persistent asthma. Small airways dysfunction (SAD) is integral to the asthma management paradigm as it is associated with poorer symptom control, greater levels of type 2 inflammation, and has been proposed as a potential treatable asthma trait. Although identification of SAD by oscillometry has been found to be clinically useful in managing asthma, very few physicians, including specialists, use this technique as part of standard or adjunct evaluation of lung function to diagnose asthma, grade severity of airway obstruction, ascertain disease control or the risk for future exacerbations or to make management decisions.
