Depressive symptoms and hypomagnesemia in older diabetic subjects.

Background: We undertook this study to assess the hypothesis that hypomagnesemia is associated with depressive symptoms in older people with diabetes.

Methods: A total of 55 type 2 diabetic patients, aged 65 years or older, with depressive symptoms were compared with a control group of diabetic subjects without depressive symptoms in an age- and gender-matched case/control study. A score >or=11 points in the Yesavage's scale was used for defining depressive symptoms, and hypomagnesemia was defined by serum magnesium levels <0.

Resource allocation equity in northeastern Mexico.

Currently, the population health needs are unlimited, but allocation of financial resources is not in accordance with these needs, probably due to the lack of specific information. In this work, we propose a new approach to allocate resources with equity as a tool for decision-making in planning. The grade of equity in resource allocation in decentralized management medical areas (DMMAs (AMGD, for its initials in Spanish)) was determined; these are limited geographical areas of a social security institution in three states of the northeastern region of Mexico.

The emotional response of families to children with leukemia at the lower socio-economic level in central Mexico: a preliminary report.

Little research has been done in developing countries on the emotional impact experienced by families who have a child diagnosed with leukemia. This preliminary study looked at parents in Mexico who had to cope with their child's leukemia in the face of meager financial and social resources. The 51 children in the study were under 15 years and being treated for leukemia in hospitals affiliated with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) where their parents were interviewed using a questionnaire to ascertain their emotional responses to the illness.
