Aged garlic extract and S-allylcysteine increase the GLUT3 and GCLC expression levels in cerebral ischemia.

Adv Clin Exp Med

December 2019

Laboratory of Molecular and Genomic Biology, Faculty of Biological Chemical Sciences, Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, Chilpancingo, Mexico.

Background: During cerebral ischemia, energy restoration through the regulation of glucose transporters and antioxidant defense mechanisms is essential to maintain cell viability. Antioxidant therapy has been considered effective to attenuate brain damage; moreover, the regulation of transcription factors that positively regulate the expression of glucose transporters is associated with this therapy. Recently, it has been reported that the use of antioxidants such as S-allylcysteine (SAC), a component of aged garlic extract (AGE), improves survival in experimental models of cerebral ischemia.

The cytotrophoblast of human placenta transitions into an outer multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast (STB) layer that covers chorionic villi which are in contact with maternal blood in the intervillous space. During pregnancy, the Zika virus (ZIKV) poses a serious prenatal threat. STB cells are resistant to ZIKV infections, yet placental cells within the mesenchyme of chorionic villi are targets of ZIKV infection.

There is a lack of specific antiviral therapy against dengue virus (DENV) in current use. Therefore, a great proportion of dengue cases progress to severe clinical forms due to a complex interplay between virus and host immune response. It has been hypothesized that heterotypic non-neutralizing antibodies enhance DENV infection in phagocytic cells, and this induces an inflammatory response that is involved in the pathogenesis of severe dengue.

Objective: In neonates on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), amino acids may be a risk factor for developing total parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (TPNAC). We aimed, first, to compare methionine, cysteine, and taurine plasma levels between neonates on TPN who were receiving an intravenous amino acid solution based on a breast milk aminogram and those on an intravenous solution of pediatric amino acids based on an umbilical cord aminogram, and second, to determine the frequency of TPNAC.

Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological condition that frequently induces severe neuronal injury in the hippocampus, subsequent epileptogenesis and pharmacoresistant spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS). The repeated administration of LEV (a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug) during the post-SE period does not prevent the subsequent development of SRS. However, this treatment reduces SE-induced neurodegeneration in the hippocampus.

Conditionally replicative adenoviruses (CRAds) replicate poorly in murine cancer cells; however, E1b-deleted CRAds may replicate effectively in HPV16-E6/E7-positive murine cancer cells (TC-1). The HPV16 E7 open reading frame encodes functions analogous to these deleted adenovirus E1 proteins. In this study, an E1b-deleted CRAd (Adhz60) was evaluated for its ability to replicate and induce oncolysis in TC-1 cells.

Differentially Expressed Long Non-Coding RNAs Were Predicted to Be Involved in the Control of Signaling Pathways in Pediatric Astrocytoma.

Mol Neurobiol

October 2017

Functional Genomics Laboratory, Unit of Human Genetics Research, Children's Hospital, "Dr. Silvestre Frenk Freund," National Medical Center Century XXI, Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), 06720, Mexico City, Mexico.

Expression changes for long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified in adult glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and in a mixture of adult and pediatric astrocytoma. Since adult and pediatric astrocytomas are molecularly different, the mixture of both could mask specific features in each. We determined the global expression patterns of lncRNAs and messenger RNA (mRNAs) in pediatric astrocytoma of different histological grades.
