Background: Refractive target of low simple myopic astigmatism allows increased depth-of-focus and near visual performance in monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implants. This study investigated the effect of astigmatism and its axis on distance and near visual acuity (VA), and near visual performance for the Thai alphabet using the Thai MNREAD chart.
Design: Investigational simulation.

Introduction: Intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents are a primary management option for retinal diseases. Acute elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a complication associated with these injections that should be considered. This study investigated and compared the prophylactic effects of fixed combination anti-glaucoma medication on IOP spikes following intravitreal anti-VEGF injections.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a fluid maculopathy whose etiology is not well understood. Abnormal choroidal veins in CSC patients have been shown to have similarities with varicose veins. To identify potential mechanisms, we analyzed genotype data from 1,477 CSC patients and 455,449 controls in FinnGen.

Background: Bilateral secondary angle closure glaucoma is a presenting symptom of microspherophakia and ectopia lentis. Characterizing the associated syndrome and confirmation by genetic testing can identify associated systemic abnormalities and provide appropriate genetic counseling.
Case Presentation: A 42-year-old woman with severe intellectual disability presented with light perception visual acuity and glaucoma, with intraocular pressure (IOP) in her right and left eyes of 69 and 70 mmHg, respectively.

Colour vision deficiency is an impairment in discriminating colours. Beyond occupational opportunities, colour vision-based restrictions may limit driving, which is a daily task for many people. This review aims to compare existing colour vision requirements for obtaining a driving license in southeast Asian countries to the rest of the world.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Early detection is believed to be essential to disease management because it enables physicians to initiate treatment in patients with early-stage AD (early AD), with the possibility of stopping the disease or slowing disease progression, preserving function and ultimately reducing disease burden. The purpose of this study was to review prior research on the use of eye biomarkers and artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting AD and early AD.

Objectives: To appraise whether plasma exchange (PLEX) effectively improves visual function for acute optic neuritis (ON) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).
Methods And Analysis: We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, ProQuest Central, and Web of Science to identify relevant articles published between 2006 and 2020.Eligible studies were in English and evaluated visual outcomes for people with acute ON in NMO or NMOSD treated with PLEX.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of preventable blindness, is expected to remain a growing health burden worldwide. Screening to detect early sight-threatening lesions of DR can reduce the burden of vision loss; nevertheless, the process requires intensive manual labor and extensive resources to accommodate the increasing number of patients with diabetes. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown to be an effective tool which can potentially lower the burden of screening DR and vision loss.

Purpose: To study the surgical outcomes of glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation in refractory glaucoma patients.
Patients And Methods: Retrospective chart review of glaucoma patients undergoing GDD implantation, Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV), Baerveldt glaucoma implants (BGI), and Aurolab aqueous drainage implantation (AADI) from January 2012 to June 2021. Glaucoma patients were classified into two groups: primary glaucoma including: primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) and juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG) and secondary glaucoma including: neovascular glaucoma (NVG), ocular surgery (vitreoretinal surgery, scleral buckling procedure, postoperative extra capsular cataract extraction, scleral fixation intraocular lens, penetrating keratoplasty), intraocular trauma, uveitis glaucoma, lens-induced glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG), iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndromes and Axenfeld Rieger Syndrome.

Road traffic mortalities (RTMs), a leading cause of death globally, mostly occur in low- and middle-income countries, and having sufficient healthcare resources could lower the number of these fatalities. Our study aimed to illustrate the incidence of RTMs per 100,000 population and to compare the distribution of healthcare resources from 2011 to 2021 with rates of RTMs in the 77 provinces of Thailand. We divided the population into adults (≥ 15 years) and children (0-14 years).

Purpose: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), the most common mitochondrial optic neuropathy, causes visual loss, especially in young adults. Due to the absence of epidemiological data in Southeast Asia, we aimed to determine Thai LHON patients' characteristics (demographic data, mutation types, and prognoses) as the first study in this region.
Methods: This retrospective chart review enrolled all Thai LHON patients confirmed by three mitochondrial DNA mutations (G11778A, T14484C, and G3460A) between January 1997 and December 2016.

Clinical diagnoses of slow, progressive, painless visual losses with various degrees of visual field (VF) losses and disc atrophy are often confused between suprasellar compressive optic neuropathy (CON) and open-angle glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON). We plotted the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) against the mean deviation (MD) of the VF of 34 eyes of CON at diagnosis, 30 eyes of CON after therapy, 29 eyes of GON, and 60 eyes of healthy controls in a cross-sectional investigation. At diagnosis, a disproportionally early pattern of structural thinning compared with the corresponding VF losses was unique to CON.

Purpose: To collect the normal value data of corneal hysteresis in Thais and study the variation of corneal hysteresis in glaucomatous eyes.
Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of corneal hysteresis (CH) in healthy non-glaucomatous and glaucomatous eyes. Demographic data, type and staging of glaucoma, Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and ocular response analyzer parameters; CH, corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) and Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg) were collected.

Purpose: Utility index is a significant outcome in terms of health economics assessment while patient-reported outcome measure (PROMs) evaluates quality of life (QOL) from patient's perspective. Our objective was to evaluate both utility indices and PROMs using generic and eye specific QOL in glaucomatous patients compared with normal population.

Background: There is very limited evidence examining serious systemic adverse events (SSAEs) and post-injection endophthalmitis of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) and intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) treatments in Thailand and low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, findings from the existing trials might have limited generalizability to certain populations and rare SSAEs.
Objectives: This prospective observational study aimed to assess and compare the safety profiles of IVB and IVR in patients with retinal diseases in Thailand.

To report a modified surgical strategy in the management of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome-associated iris prolapse. Prolapsed iris is left as is and a new corneal incision near the original wound but at a different site is created. Depending on the location of the original incision and the surgeon's preference, this additional incision can be used as a new port for phacoemulsification tip or can be the new site for the iris to securely prolapse, allowing for the surgery to proceed safely.
