Conventional suspension cultures have been used in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) research to study its biology as well as to screen any drug molecules, since its inception. Co-culture models of AML cells and other stromal cells as well as 3 dimensional (3D) culture models have gained much attention recently. These culture models try to recapitulate the tumour microenvironment and are found to be more suitable than suspension cultures.

We use X-ray photoemission and a near ambient pressure with a liquid microjet setup to investigate the electronic structure of FeOOH nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solution. In particular, we show that by using X-ray resonant photoemission in dilute solutions, we can overcome the limits of conventional photoemission such as low nanoparticle-to-solvent signal ratio, and local nanoparticle charging and measure the valence band structure of FeOOH nanoparticles in aqueous solution with chemical specificity. The resonant photoemission signal across the Fe 2p absorption edge is measured for 2 wt% aqueous solutions of FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs) and the valence band maximum (VBM) of the hydrated FeOOH nanoparticles is determined.

Divergent interpretations have appeared in the literature regarding the structural nature and evolutionary behavior for photoluminescent CdSe nanospecies with sharp doublets in optical absorption. We report a comprehensive description of the transformation pathway from one CdSe nanospecies displaying an absorption doublet at 373/393 nm to another species with a doublet at 433/460 nm. These two nanospecies are zero-dimensional (0D) magic-size clusters (MSCs) with 3D quantum confinement, and are labeled dMSC-393 and dMSC-460, respectively.

Soot is typically the dominant component of the nonvolatile particles emitted from internal combustion engines. Although soot is primarily composed of carbon, its chemistry, toxicity, and oxidation rates may be strongly influenced by internally mixed inorganic metal compounds (ash). Here, we describe the detailed microstructure of ash internally mixed with soot from four marine engines and one aviation engine.

We report the first observation of the reversible transformations that occur among three types of CdTe magic-size clusters (MSCs) in dispersion at room temperature and discuss our understanding of the transformation pathway. The reversible transformations were achieved with CdTe prenucleation stage samples, which were prepared with reactions of cadmium oleate [Cd(OA)] and tri--octylphosphine telluride in 1-octadecene and were then dispersed in mixtures of toluene and a primary amine at room temperature. Three types of OA-passivated CdTe MSCs evolved, exhibiting sharp optical absorption singlets peaking at 371, 417, and 448 nm.

A knowledge of colloidal semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) is essential for understanding how fundamental properties evolve during transformations from individual molecules to semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Compared to QDs, MSCs display much narrower optical absorption bands; the higher cluster stability gives rise to a narrower size distribution. During the production of binary QDs such as II-VI metal (M) chalcogenide (E) ones, binary ME MSCs observed were interpreted as side products and/or the nuclei of QDs.

In the biomedical detection context, plasmonic tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a very accurate and sensitive sensing tool, especially well-adapted for biochemical detection. In this work, we have developed an aptasensor following a triple strategy to improve the overall sensing performances and robustness. Single polarization fiber (SPF) is used as biosensor substrate while the demodulation is based on tracking a peculiar feature of the lower envelope of the cladding mode resonances spectrum.

CD47 is over-expressed in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and functions as an inhibitory signal, suppressing phagocytosis by binding to signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) on the surface of macrophages. Inhibition of CD47 restores the immune surveillance of AML cells. However, the inhibition of CD47 in AML by activated macrophages and the subsequent effects on different immune response parameters are not fully understood.

Conventional analytical techniques allow for the diagnosis of leukemia, blood and bone marrow cancers, as well as their classification into the different subtypes. However, a better understanding of the cancer treatment through cell apoptosis staging is still required. Evaluation of the timeline and responses of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells to the arsenic trioxide (ATO) treatment is essential for determining the oral dosage in leukemia prognosis.

Physical chemical characterization of nanomaterials is critical to assessing quality control during production, evaluating the impact of material properties on human health and the environment, and developing regulatory frameworks for their use. We have investigated a set of 29 nanomaterials from four metal oxide families (aluminum, copper, titanium and zinc) with a focus on the measurands that are important for the basic characterization of dry nanomaterials and the determination of the dose metrics for nanotoxicology. These include crystalline phase and crystallite size, measured by powder X-ray diffraction, particle shape and size distributions from transmission electron microscopy, and specific surface area, measured by gas adsorption.

Little is known about the pathway of room-temperature formation of ternary CdTeSe magic-size clusters (MSCs) obtained by mixing binary CdTe and CdSe induction period samples containing binary precursor compounds (PCs) of MSCs, monomers (Ms), and fragments (Fs). Also, unestablished are dispersion effects that occur when as-mixed samples (without incubation) are placed in toluene (Tol) and octylamine (OTA) mixtures. The resulting ternary MSCs, exhibiting a sharp optical absorption peak at 399 nm, are labelled CdTeSe MSC-399, and their PCs are referred to as CdTeSe PC-399.

Colloidal small-size CdS quantum dots (QDs) are produced usually with low particle yield, together with side products such as the particular precursor compounds (PCs) of magic-size clusters (MSC). Here, we report our synthesis of small-size CdS QDs without the coexistence of the PC and thus with enhanced particle yield. For a conventional reaction of cadmium oleate (Cd(OA) ) and sulfur (S) in 1-octadecene (ODE), we show that after the formation of the PC in the pre-nucleation stage, the addition of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) facilitates the production of small-size QDs.

An approach is reported for the exclusive production of CdTe magic-size clusters (MSCs) that exhibit an optical absorption doublet peaking at 385/427 nm, with an explanation of the synthesis procedure. The MSCs, defined as dMSC-427, were produced from the reaction of cadmium oleate (Cd(OA)) and tri--octylphosphine telluride in octadecene at 100 °C, with the addition of acetic acid (HOAc) or acetate (M(OAc)) during the prenucleation stage (40 °C). Without such an addition or when it was performed in the postnucleation stage (100 °C), quantum dots (QDs) developed.
