Total elbow arthroplasties (TEA) have become more prevalent as indications expand. However, TEA complications remain a treatment conundrum. One such complication, periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) have been reported to occur in up to 12% of all TEA procedures.

Background: Multiple studies have described retrograde nailing as a treatment of periprosthetic supracondylar femoral fractures (OTA/AO type 33A-C) above total knee replacements (TKRs). It is often difficult to discern which TKRs will be compatible with intramedullary nailing because the femoral component design and intercondylar distance is highly variable among total knee designs. The goal of our study is 3-fold: (1) Review and update previous work of intercondylar distances of all currently available prostheses in the United States.

Background: Comprehensive US epidemiologic data for adult pleural disease are not available.

Research Question: What are the epidemiologic measures related to adult pleural disease in the United States?

Study Design And Methods: Retrospective cohort study using Healthcare Utilization Project databases (2007-2016). Adults (≥ 18 years of age) with malignant pleural mesothelioma, malignant pleural effusion, nonmalignant pleural effusion, empyema, primary and secondary spontaneous pneumothorax, iatrogenic pneumothorax, and pleural TB were studied.

Objective: We hypothesized that healthcare workers (HCWs) with high-risk exposures outside the healthcare system would have less asymptomatic coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) disease and more symptoms than those without such exposures.

Design: A longitudinal point prevalence study was conducted during August 17-September 4, 2020 (period 1) and during December 2-23, 2020 (period 2).

Setting: Community based teaching health system.

Background: Müllerian agenesis, or Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, occurs in 1 in 4500 to 5000 individuals assigned female sex at birth. Pelvic floor symptoms among individuals with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome have not been well studied, and it is unknown how vaginal lengthening treatments affect these symptoms.

Objective: This study aimed to assess urinary, prolapse, and bowel symptoms in individuals with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome and to determine whether symptoms vary by vaginal lengthening treatment.

Unlabelled: When rotator cuff tears occur after a primary repair at the footprint, they often fail medially at the myotendinous junction, also called type II tears. These are difficult tears to treat, and little research has been published on how to address tears at the myotendinous junction and the clinical outcomes of the revised repairs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of type II rotator cuff tears repaired with a dermal allograft augmentation.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches in the Management of Infrapopliteal Arterial Disease.

Interv Cardiol Clin

April 2020

Department of Medicine, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA; Metro Health-University of Michigan Health, Grand Rapids, MI, USA. Electronic address:

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia represents end-stage peripheral artery disease. It is underdiagnosed; it relies on clinical symptoms and traditional noninvasive tests, which significantly underestimate the severity of disease. Innovative techniques, approaches, technologies, and risk-assessment tools have significantly improved our ability to treat these patients and to better understand their complex disease process.

Study Objective: The best initial strategy for nontension symptomatic spontaneous pneumothorax is unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the most efficacious, safe, and efficient initial intervention in adults with nontension spontaneous pneumothorax.

Methods: MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.

Objectives And Background: Complex peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and critical limb ischemia (CLI) are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Endovascular techniques have become prevalent in treatment of advanced PAD and CLI, and use of techniques such as tibiopedal minimally invasive revascularization (TAMI), have been proven safe in small, single-center series. However, its use has not been systematically compared to traditional approaches.

A rare case of metastatic sigmoid adenocarcinoma to the ureter.

Urol Case Rep

September 2019

Metro Health-University of Michigan Health, 5900 Byron Center Ave SW, Wyoming, MI, 49519, USA.

Colorectal cancer is a very common disease process, as is ureteral obstruction, but the two are typically mutually exclusive. The case report presented details a 35-year-old male with left sided flank pain and hydroureteronephrosis caused by metastatic spread of previously diagnosed and treated sigmoid adenocarcinoma. About two years previously, he had been diagnosed with Stage IV, T4a sigmoid colon cancer with liver metastasis and had resection of his primary tumor as well as metastatic sites and several rounds of chemotherapy.

Introduction: A seemingly large percentage of geriatric patients with isolated low-energy femur fractures undergo a head computed tomography (CT) scans during initial work up in the emergency department. This study aimed to evaluate the pertinent clinical variables that are associated with positive CT findings with the objective to decrease the number of unnecessary CT scans performed.

Methods: A retrospective review performed at a level II trauma center including 713 patients over the age of 65 sustaining a femur fracture following a low-energy fall.

Antiplatelet therapy at the time of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) may increase risk for hemorrhage expansion and mortality. Current guidelines recommend considering a single dose of desmopressin in sICH associated with cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitors or adenosine diphosphate receptor inhibitors. Adult subjects with sICH and concomitant antiplatelet therapy admitted to a large, tertiary care center were included.

Background: Improving postoperative pain control may lead to improved outcomes including decreased opioid use, shorter hospital stays, and improved patient satisfaction. This study examined the effects of instilling intraperitoneal bupivacaine following laparoscopic appendectomy.

Methods: In this prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, patients with appendicitis were randomized to receive either the bupivacaine or normal saline instilled at the appendectomy site prior to close.

Objective: To study the association between Electronic Health Record (EHR)/Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) provider price display, and domains of healthcare quality (efficiency, effective care, patient centered care, patient safety, equitable care, and timeliness of care).

Methods: Randomized and non-randomized studies assessing the relationship between healthcare quality domains and EHR/CPOE provider price display published between 1/1/1980 to 2/1/2018 were included. MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase were searched.

Purpose: To investigate the hypothesis that interventions involving retrograde below-the-knee (BTK) vessel punctures have an acceptably low complication rate and high procedural success.

Methods: A systematic review was performed of the MEDLINE and Scopus databases for articles describing the results of BTK retrograde access for peripheral interventions. Outcome measures were access success, procedure success, and complications.

Purpose: To present the chronic total occlusion (CTO) crossing approach based on plaque cap morphology (CTOP) classification system and assess its ability to predict successful lesion crossing.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of imaging and procedure data from 114 consecutive symptomatic patients (mean age 69±11 years; 84 men) with claudication (Rutherford category 3) or critical limb ischemia (Rutherford category 4-6) who underwent endovascular interventions for 142 CTOs. CTO cap morphology was determined from a review of angiography and duplex ultrasonography and classified into 4 types (I, II, III, or IV) based on the concave or convex shape of the proximal and distal caps.

Purpose: To describe a novel technique designed to safely and precisely deploy the Supera stent accurately at the ostium of the proximal superficial femoral artery (SFA) without compromising the profunda and common femoral arteries.

Technique: After antegrade crossing of the chronic total occlusion (CTO) at the SFA ostium and accurate predilation of the entire SFA lesion, a retrograde arterial access is obtained. The Supera stent is navigated in retrograde fashion to position the first crown to be released just at the SFA ostium.
