Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) are produced by fermentation of water-soluble fiber by anaerobic bacteria in the large bowel. Fiber-rich diets decrease the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and butyrate enemas are effective as a therapy in some patients. Crohn's disease, one form of IBD, appears to involve an exagerated T helper-1 (Th1) lymphocyte phenotype, characterised by production of interleukin (IL)-2 and interferon (IFN)-gamma, that drives the inflammation.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes produced by the Fränkel appliance in individuals with a Class II, division 1 malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms of 44 patients of both sexes were divided in two groups of 22 each. The control group was comprised of untreated Class II children with an initial mean age of eight years and seven months who were followed without treatment for a period of 13 months.

Moisturizers containing vitamins A and E as well as ceramides are believed to improve the skin condition by increasing the water content of the stratum corneum. The aim of this research was to evaluate, through the capacitance method (a non-invasive method), the moisturizing effect of an O/W emulsion (non-ionic self-emulsifying base) containing vitamin A palmitate, vitamin E acetate, and ceramide III on human skin. The studies were carried out on a group of 40 healthy Caucasian female test subjects between 30 and 45 years of age, using the Corneometer CM 825 PC.

The effect of glutamine on the activity of the NADPH oxidase complex from rat neutrophils was investigated. Superoxide anion (O(2)(-)) production was assessed: (1) by scintillation counting by using lucigenin, and (2) by reduction of cytochrome c over 10 min. The effects of glutamine and PMA on the expression of the NADPH oxidase components p22( phox ), gp91( phox ) and p47( phox ) were also determined.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes produced by the Fränkel (FR-2) and bionator appliances in persons with Class II malocclusion. Lateral cephalograms were available for 66 patients of both sexes, who were divided into 3 groups of 22. The control group included untreated Class II children, with an initial mean age of 8 years 7 months; they were followed without treatment for 13 months.

This study addressed the following question: What is the effect of fermentable and nonfermentable fiber-rich diets on intestinal immune cells' function and metabolism? For this purpose, weaning rats received, for 8 weeks, two types of fiber-enriched (30%) diets with different fermentable/nonfermentable fiber ratios, that is, oat bran (0.3) and wheat bran (0.14).

Methodist University of Piracicaba, Lins School of Dentistry, SP, Brazil.

A nonprofit private dental clinic provides free dental treatment for children up to the age of eighteen years. In order to expand its services to reach more children, a school-based sealant program using dental auxiliary personnel was organized. This paper evaluated the performance of the school-based program during 1991 by comparing the costs of the school-based program with the costs of the sealants placed in the clinic in twelve months.

The effect of oat bran- (OBD) and wheat bran-enriched diets (WBD) on fatty acid composition of neutral lipids and phospholipids of rat lymphocytes and macrophages was investigated. In neutral lipids of lymphocytes, OBD reduced the proportion of palmitoleic acid (48%), whereas WBD reduced by 43% palmitoleic acid and raised oleic (18%), linoleic (52%), and arachidonic (2.5-fold) acids.

The Dental Fear Survey (DFS), a paper and pencil instrument for assessing dental fear and avoidance, has been widely used and validated in fear studies in the US. However, before such instruments are used in countries and cultures dissimilar to the one in which it was developed, they should be cross-validated in that culture. The present study is an examination of the DFS response characteristics in a group of 374 Brazilian university students.
