Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an important pulmonary complication in brain-injured patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). We aimed to evaluate the incidence and association between ARDS and clinical outcomes in patients with different forms of acute brain injury requiring IMV in the intensive care unit (ICU). This was a preplanned secondary analysis of a prospective, multicenter, international cohort study (NCT03400904).

Despite similarities between compulsive sexual disorder and substance use disorder, the issue whether problematic sexual behavior should be viewed within an addiction framework continues to be a subject of debate with no consensus regarding its conceptualization and diagnosis criteria. Examining the presence of addiction criteria among clinical and no clinical samples in the existing literature could permit to ascertain clinical validity of sex addiction diagnosis and support its overlapping feature with other addictive disorders. The aim of this systematic review was to examine this issue by assessing DSM-5 criteria of substance use disorder among individuals engaged in problematic sexual activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Deprescribing is the process of stopping or reducing medication that is no longer beneficial or has more risks than benefits, aimed at reducing polypharmacy, particularly among older adults.
  • A systematic review analyzed 36 randomized controlled trials focused on deprescribing interventions, categorizing outcomes into medication, clinical, system, and implementation outcomes.
  • The findings highlight that while many studies included various outcome categories primarily related to medication and clinical effects, there is a need for better development and emphasis on implementation outcomes to enhance the practical application of deprescribing practices.

Article Synopsis
  • The PREOPTI-DAM study investigated the effectiveness of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) versus facemask for preoxygenation in patients with anticipated difficult airway management, finding no significant difference in oxygen desaturation rates during intubation between the two methods.
  • The study enrolled 186 patients who were randomly assigned to either HFNC or facemask groups, with the primary outcome being oxygen desaturation or the need for bag-mask ventilation.
  • Results showed that while incidence rates for complications were similar, patients using HFNC reported better intubation experiences compared to those using facemasks, indicating a potential benefit for HFNC in difficult airway management scenarios.

December 2023

UMR INSERM 1246 SPHERE "methodS in Patient-Centered Outcomes and HEalth ResEarch", Nantes University, University of Tours, 22 Boulevard Benoni Goullin, Nantes, France.

Purpose: Managers' actions can facilitate the return to work (RTW) process for breast cancer survivors (BCS). However, data on BCS' experiences of managers' actions regarding RTW are dispersed across multiple qualitative studies and do not offer useful insights for managers to support employees returning to work. This study aimed to summarize and map managers' actions experienced by BCS over three RTW phases (before, during, after) and categorize them as facilitating or hindering RTW.

Background: Since the appearance of zolpidem on the market, the occurrence of serious cases of abuse, misuse and dependence have come to the attention of authorities. In view of the increase in the number and severity of cases among zolpidem users and the predominant presence of zolpidem in falsified prescriptions, the French Health Authorities implemented part of the narcotics regulation for zolpidem in April 2017. The objective of this article was to describe the evolution of the abuse, dependence and misuse of zolpidem.
