Growth hormone (GH) is nonphysiologically increased in acromegaly, stimulating target tissues directly and indirectly via insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1). Despite GH having anabolic effects on bone growth and renewal, the risk of vertebral fractures is paradoxically increased in acromegaly. We hypothesized that bone tissue compartments were differentially affected by hormonal alterations in active and controlled acromegaly.

The incomplete disease penetrance and the phenotypic heterogeneity observed in carriers of D4Z4 alleles of reduced size, the FSHD molecular hallmark, make the estimate of genetic risk problematic.
Methods: We considered all requests of preconception counseling and prenatal diagnosis received between January 2008 and December 2020 by the genetic counseling service associated with the Italian National Registry for FSHD (INRF).

Background Epidemiologic studies, including trials, suggest an association between potassium intake and blood pressure (BP). However, the strength and shape of this relationship is uncertain. Methods and Results We performed a meta-analysis to explore the dose-response relationship between potassium supplementation and BP in randomized-controlled trials with a duration ≥4 weeks using the recently developed 1-stage cubic spline regression model.

This case contributes to raising awareness and understanding of the complex clinical presentations of Munchausen syndrome (MS). Education of staff to the seriousness and genuineness of this disorder should be implemented, especially in hospital units, in order to detect such complex clinical situations quickly and accurately, preventing iatrogenic risks.

However, while recent studies focused on which type of exercise is more indicated to ALS patients, there is no evidence at which frequency training sessions should be performed.
Methods: We performed an assessor blinded randomized clinical trial to investigate the superiority of two different frequencies of exercise on rate of progression in ALS.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) diagnosis is challenging and is based on serum calcium (Ca) and parathyroid hormone (PTH). Because serum Ca and phosphorous (P) are inversely related in PHPT, we investigated the diagnostic value of the serum Ca/P ratio in the diagnosis of PHPT. We report a single-center, case-controlled, retrospective study including 97 patients with documented PHPT and compared them with those of 96 controls (C).
