Multimodality Imaging in Cardiomyopathies.

Cardiomyopathy, which is shortly defined as a disease of the myocardium, has a broad definition that includes many different diagnoses. Recent advances in cardiac imaging techniques, including basic and advanced echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and cardiac magnetic resonance, allow for a more accurate evaluation of volumes and thickness of cardiac chambers, systolic and diastolic function of the ventricules, and tissue structure. Multimodality imaging often provides the first clinical suspicion for specific etiologies, especially when the medical and family history is unclear, by identification of red flags of underlying systemic diseases.

Therapeutic implications of etiology-specific diagnosis of early-onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (EO-DEEs): A nationwide Turkish cohort study.

Objective: To evaluate the etiology-specific diagnosis of early-onset developmental epileptic encephalopathies (EO-DEEs) in a nationwide Turkish cohort to determine the implications for therapeutic management.

Methods: The cohort comprised 1450 patients who underwent EO-DEE. The utility of genetic testing was assessed with respect to the initial phases of next generation sequencing (NGS) (2005-2013) and the current NGS era (2014-2022).

Roxadustat versus placebo for patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome: MATTERHORN phase 3, double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

In patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS), response to first-line therapy is limited and transient. The MATTERHORN randomized, double-blind, phase 3 trial evaluated roxadustat versus placebo for patients with transfusion-dependent, lower-risk MDS. Eligible patients had very low-, low-, or intermediate-risk MDS with or without prior erythropoiesis-stimulating agent treatment, and a transfusion burden of 1-4 packed red blood cell (pRBC) units every 8 weeks (Q8W).

The Role of Biomarkers in Predicting Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Patients with Heart Failure.

Objective: This study explores the impact of sST2, Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15), and clinical factors on cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods: A cohort of 101 chronic stable HFrEF patients aged over 65 years old participated in the study. Cognitive functions were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE).

Changes in cardiac functions in patients treated with parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Our study aims to investigate the changes in cardiac functions, especially myocardial performance index (MPI), in patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism. Patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism between June 2010 and September 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups: those who underwent total parathyroidectomy (group 1) and those who underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy (group 2).

The effects of topical mafenide acetate application on skin graft survival in bacterial contaminated wounds.

Background: Infection related skin graft loss still remains as a common problem even with the use of systemic antibiotics. Mafenide acetate (Sulfamylon) is a topical antimicrobial agent with a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Since mafenide acetate has the ability to penetrate the burn eschar, it was preferred in the treatment of infected full-thickness skin grafts.

Circulating MicroRNAs in the Screening of Prenatal Down Syndrome.

Objective: Screening tests are recommended to identify genetic defects, chromosomal aneuploidies, and structural birth defects. Sonographic and maternal serum-based options are available for the risk assessment of aneuploidy in the first and/or second trimester. Also, invasive diagnostic methods, such as amniocentesis, are used for prenatal diagnosis, but these methods carry a tangible risk to the fetus.

Guselkumab in Patients With Moderately to Severely Active Ulcerative Colitis: QUASAR Phase 2b Induction Study.

Background & Aims: The QUASAR Phase 2b Induction Study evaluated the efficacy and safety of guselkumab, an interleukin-23p19 subunit antagonist, in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) with prior inadequate response and/or intolerance to corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and/or advanced therapy.

Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging, induction study, patients were randomized (1:1:1) to receive intravenous guselkumab 200 or 400 mg or placebo at weeks 0/4/8. The primary endpoint was clinical response (compared with baseline, modified Mayo score decrease ≥30% and ≥2 points, rectal bleeding subscore ≥1-point decrease or subscore of 0/1) at week 12.

Combination of the Ratio Between Negative and Harvested Lymph Nodes and Metastatic Lymph Node Count as a Prognostic Indicator in Stage III Colon Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the ratio of negative lymph nodes (NLN) number to the number of metastatic lymph nodes (MLN) and the harvested lymph nodes (HLN) number ratio survival rate and compare its prognostic value.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 207 stage III colon cancer patients between 2010 and 2018 at a single center. NLN/MLN and NLN/HLN cut-off values were determined with the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve according to 5-year survival.

The role of internalizing problems on headache characteristics and pain coping strategies among adolescents diagnosed with episodic migraine.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the correlational processes and possible mediation mechanisms between internalizing problems and significant indicators of headache (pain frequency, duration, and intensity) and pain coping strategies among adolescents diagnosed with episodic migraine.

Methods: The study sample included 143 adolescents diagnosed with episodic migraine in compliance with the diagnostic criteria specified in ICHD-3. In collecting data, Sociodemographic Information Form, Headache Questionnaire Form, Pain Coping Questionnaire, Children's Depression Questionnaire, and Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders: Child Form were used.

The Abdominal Ultrasonography Results of Cappadocia Cohort Study of Turkey Reveals High Prevalence of Fatty Liver.

Background: There is limited data about the prevalence of frequent gastrointestinal diseases in developing parts of the world based on community-based screening studies. Therefore, we aimed to present the detailed transabdominal ultrasonography results of the previously completed Turkey Cappadocia cohort study, which included a population-based evaluation of gastrointestinal symptoms and diseases in adults.

The HALP score, which is a combined index composed of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet, is a new indicator showing both inflammation and nutritional status. This study aims to evaluate the relationship of this combined index consisting of simple laboratory values with the degree of appendicitis complication and postoperative results in patients operated on for acute appendicitis. The data of 684 patients operated for acute appendicitis between January 2017 and December 2022 and inclusion criteria were analyzed with a single-center retrospective cross-sectional study design.

Does Home Oral Nutritional Support Improve Nutritional Status and Quality of Life following Colorectal Cancer Surgery?

Oral nutritional support (ONS) is a form of supportive intervention in patients' diet in response to insufficient oral intake, malabsorption, or functional insufficient food intake during the disease process. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status, morbidity, re-admissions, functional status, QoL of patients who had undergone elective colorectal cancer surgery and initiated home ONS. A total of 144 patients who had undergone colorectal cancer surgery and given home ONS were analyzed with regard to demographics, diagnosis, weight-BMI changes, re-admissions, morbidity, daily caloric and protein intake, functional status (Barthel index) and QoL (The Satisfaction with Life Scale-SWLS).
