Electronic address:

Coastal waters are receiving increasing loads of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), differing in structural complexity and molecular weights with potential different effects on the phosphorus (P) dynamics in these waters. This study conducted an in-situ investigation in Xiangshan Harbor, China, to explore the patterns of P release in response to DOC inputs. To further elucidate the underlying mechanisms behind the DOC-affected sediment P release, a two-month mesocosm experiment was undertaken with coastal sediment (Xiangshan Harbor) to which acetate, glucose, and humic acid (representing the fermentation product, the simple available carbon, and the refractory humic-like carbon sources, respectively) were separately added to the overlying water at dosages of 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg C L.

We utilized PISA-2018 data from 71 countries to investigate the relationship between cognitive constructs employed in reading literacy (locating information, understanding, evaluating and reflecting, single and multiple thinking) and math and science achievement. We found that these cognitive constructs collectively accounted for 56% of the variance in math and 63% in science achievement, even after adjusting for gender, socioeconomic status, and country fixed effects. This means that the majority of cultural differences in math and science achievement (resulting from different education systems) can be explained by cognitive constructs employed in reading.

Sulfonate derivatives are an essential class of compounds with diverse pharmacological applications. This study presents the synthesis and detailed characterization of six novel Schiff base sulfonate derivatives (L-L) through spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR and NMR). Their inhibitory potential was evaluated against human carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes (hCA I and hCA II) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which are crucial therapeutic targets for diseases such as glaucoma, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease.

Article Synopsis
  • The CMS experiment conducted a search for charge-parity violation in decays using proton-proton collision data from 2018, analyzing around 10 billion events with b hadrons decaying into charm hadrons.
  • The flavor of the neutral D meson was determined through the charge of pions in the reconstructed decays, and an asymmetry measurement in the decays was reported, taking into account various uncertainties.
  • This research marks the first asymmetry measurement by the CMS in the charm sector and the first to use a fully hadronic final state in such analyses.

Breast milk, a fundamental component of infant nutrition, may serve as a reservoir for various metal(loid)s, which could pose significant health risks to infants of mothers exposed to toxic metals. Human exposure levels to metal(loid)s vary across regions, influenced by differences in diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors. This systematic review compares metal(loid) concentrations in breast milk from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Mediterranean Europe (Med.

  • The genus Neoleptastacus is revised, identifying 24 valid species grouped into five main groups based on shared morphology, with certain subgroups further defined.
  • Two species previously under Neoleptastacus were transferred to a new genus, Phreatipontia, known for preferring low salinity habitats.
  • Several new species were discovered and described from various regions, including Central and South America, as well as assessments of previously classified species, resulting in new taxonomic classifications.

Purpose Of Review: Although there are a lot of studies examining the effects of different blocks for postoperative analgesia after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), the results are controversial.

Recent Findings: Paravertebral block, serratus anterior plane block and erector spinae plane block appear to be effective and beneficial for post-VATS analgesia, but probably in different manners.

Summary: All three blocks can be suggested for daily practice, the choice should be based on personal experience and preference of the anesthetist.

State-of-health estimation and classification of series-connected batteries by using deep learning based hybrid decision approach.

Heliyon

October 2024

Computer Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Mersin University, P.O. Box 33100, Mersin, Turkey.

In rechargeable battery control and operation, one of the primary obstacles is safety concerns where the battery degradation poses a significant factor. Therefore, in recent years, state-of-health assessment of lithium-ion batteries has become a noteworthy issue. On the other hand, it is challenging to ensure robustness and generalization because most state-of-health assessment techniques are implemented for a specific characteristic, operating situation, and battery material system.

  • Phytoplankton in lakes capture atmospheric CO2 and convert it to organic carbon (OC), but most OC is recycled back to the atmosphere as CO and methane (CH), contributing to climate change.
  • * The research identifies a 3.1-fold increase in CO-equivalent emissions over the next century, exacerbated by climate warming.
  • * While climate change boosts phytoplankton growth in many lakes, it can also negatively impact their ability to sequester CO-eq, potentially weakening this feedback loop over time.
