[Investigation of SEN virus genotypes D and H among blood donors in Mersin University Medical School Hospital].

SEN virus is a recently discovered DNA virus, and eight genotypes (A to H) were detected by phylogenetic analysis. Genotype D (SENV-D) and H (SENV-H) are thought to be associated in the etiology of post-transfusion hepatitis. Although no strong association was revealed between liver pathology and SEN virus, the viral replication in hepatocytes and transmission by blood transfusions were well characterized.

Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to metastatic lung cancer: an unusual case.

There have been several published reports on metastatic lesions in the stomach, but the number of cases have been limited due to the low frequency of the condition. Metastatic lesions in the stomach are usually asymptomatic. A 55-year-old man with known metastatic lung adenocancer exhibited epigastric pain, hematemesis, and melena.

Genetic polymorphism of N-acetyltransferase 2 in the susceptibility to laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether polymorphism of N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) genotypes are associated with the risk of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Methods: The study group consisted of 45 white patients with laryngeal SCC (42 men, with a mean age of 54 years [range, 37-70 years] and three women, with a mean age of 47 years [range, 32-55 years]) and 104 control subjects (68 men and 36 women; mean age, 50 years; range, 28-73 years). All of the patients were primarily treated with surgical intervention.

May glutathione S-transferase M1 positive genotype afford protection against primary open-angle glaucoma?

Purpose: To find out whether the polymorphism at GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 loci is associated with increased susceptibility to glaucoma.

Methods: We genotyped 153 primary open angle patients and 159 healthy controls. Genomic DNA from peripheral blood was examined using polymerase chain reaction and defined for the genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase.

Clinical characteristics of essential tremor in Mersin, Turkey--a population-based door-to-door study.

Objective: To describe the clinical features of essential tremor (ET) in a population.

Background: With few exceptions, clinical data on ET are derived from patients who attend specialty clinics. Most (> 90%) population-dwelling ET cases do not seek neurological attention.

[A simple positioning device for radiographic imaging of the patellofemoral joint: a technical note].

The informative value of axial radiographs of the patellofemoral joint is highly dependent on application techniques and knee positioning. We developed a simple device that enables an appropriate and easy positioning. With the use of this device, patellofemoral axial radiographs can be obtained at 30 degrees of knee flexion.

[The effect of mometasone furoate on mucociliary clearance in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis].

Objectives: We investigated the effect of mometasone furoate on mucociliary clearance in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis.

Patients And Methods: The study included 25 patients (16 females, 9 males; mean age 30 years; range 18 to 50 years) with perennial allergic rhinitis. Mometasone furoate (nasal spray) was administered at a dose of 2 puffs (100 microgr) to each nostril daily for a month.

N-acetylcysteine inhibits peroxynitrite-mediated damage in oleic acid-induced lung injury.

Since oleic acid (OA) induces morphologic and cellular changes similar to those observed in human acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome, it has become a widely used model to investigate the effects of several agents on pathogenesis of lung injury. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been documented in many lung injury models. In this study, we evaluated the role of NAC in an OA-induced lung injury model by measuring myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) and 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) levels in lung tissue.

Optimization of extracellular endoxylanase, endoglucanase and peroxidase production by Streptomyces sp. F2621 isolated in Turkey.

Aims: To determine the effect of environmental conditions on the production of extracellular lignocellulose-degrading enzymes by Streptomyces sp. F2621 and to assess the potential use of these enzymes in the hydrolysis of lignocellulose material.

Methods And Results: The production of extracellular lignocellulose-degrading enzymes, endoxylanase, endoglucanase and peroxidase during the growth of Streptomyces sp.

Effects of terlipressin on systolic pulmonary artery pressure of patients with liver cirrhosis: an echocardiographic assessment.

Aim: Portopulmonary hypertension is a serious complication of chronic liver disease. Our aim was to search into the effect of terlipressin on systolic pulmonary artery pressure among cirrhotic patients.

Methods: Twelve patients (6 males and 6 females) with liver cirrhosis were recruited in the study.

[Femoral vascular complications after percutaneous coronary interventions].

Objective: We aimed to investigate peripheral vascular complications and their relation with treatment and clinical parameters in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) patients.

Methods: We included into the study 321 patients (aged 57+/-11 years) underwent PTCA between November 2001-August 2002. The age, gender, glycoprotein 2b/3a use, thrombolytic use, intraaortic balloon treatment, transient pacemaker treatment, reintervention history, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking status, family history and the correlations of these parameters with local vascular complications were assessed in all patients.

Transient partial amnesia complicating cardiac and peripheral arteriography with nonionic contrast medium.

The aim of this study was to present a case of disruption of the blood-brain barrier during the coronary and lower extremity angiographies with radiological and clinical findings. This condition was secondary to intraarterial use of a nonionic, monomeric contrast medium. A total of 450 cc contrast media was used.

Ultrasound-guided versus 'blind' intraparotid injections of botulinum toxin-A for the treatment of sialorrhoea in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of intraparotid botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injections into parotid gland using ultrasound-guided versus nonguided techniques for the treatment of sialorrhoea in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).

Methods: 15 patients with PD and sialorrhoea were included and divided into two groups. Group A patients (n=8) were injected with BTX-A using ultrasound guidance.

Evaluation of the toxic effects of cypermethrin inhalation on the frog heart.

Cypermethrin is widely used as an insecticide on animals and in agriculture, the home, and the garden. The effect of inhaled cypermethrin on the cardiac mechanics, electrophysiology, and ultrastructure in frogs was investigated in this study. Four groups received 100 microL of cypermethrin via inhalation for different exposure times, and one group was used as a control.

The effect of urethral catheterisation on serum prostate- specific antigen levels in male patients with acute urinary retention.

Urethral catheterisation is often used in acute urinary retention (AUR). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of urethral catheterisation on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in men with AUR. Our study subjects comprised 35 men with a mean age of 63.

[The development of the wrist joint in the fetal period].

Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the development and anatomical features of the wrist joint, particularly the scapholunate ligament and triangular disc in the fetal period and to identify possible congenital variations.

Methods: The study included 16 wrist joints of eight fetuses aborted at ages 8 to 14 weeks. The samples had no macroscopically discernible anomalies.

Purification and partial characterization of alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase produced by Thermomonospora fusca.

Thermomonospora fusca produced a relatively high level of alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase when growing on oat spelt xylan as the main carbon and energy source. The enzyme exhibited maximum relative activity (0.136 U/g protein) at pH 9.

Treatment of intestinal pseudo obstruction by segmental resection.

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction refractory to medical therapy is a debilitating problem for specialists dealing with gastrointestinal disorders. We report the case of a newborn who developed severe, recurrent symptoms of intestinal obstruction, due to visceral myopathy. The case was persistently intractable to medical management, leading to repeated laparotomies.

The effects of carnitine on distally-burned dorsal skin flap: an experimental study in rats.

Objective: In ischemia and burn injuries, there are major alterations threatening tissue survival. Increased energy flow requirements are among the major problems in these disorders. Carnitine is an endogenous cofactor, which has a regulatory action on the energy flow from different oxidative sources.

[The reliability of somatosensory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome].

Objectives: We assessed the role of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) in the diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome.

Methods: Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in provocative and decompressing positions in 30 patients (28 females, 2 males; mean age 32 years; range 20 to 52 years) with a diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome and in 30 healthy subjects showing a similar age and sex distribution.

Results: All recordings yielded normal ranges in both groups.

Behçet's syndrome coexisting with clinically occult ankylosing spondylitis.

The case of a 36-year old man with Behçet's disease (BS) for 16 years had low back pain and stiffness in the cervical and lumbar spine. He was diagnosed as having ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In this report we wish to emphasize the clinically occult co-existence of AS in BS and revelation of AS after a long time of BS diagnose.

Effects of trimetazidine on tissue damage in kidney after hindlimb ischemia-reperfusion.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of trimetazidine (TMZ) on tissue damage in kidney after hindlimb ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), by assessing blood biochemical assay and histopathological analysis. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into two groups. TMZ 10 mg kg(-1)day(-1) was administrated twice a day for 10 days to the treatment group (group T, n=10).
