Children with neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders (N/MHD), such as autism spectrum, mood disorders, and anxiety, are more likely to engage in excessive screen time, receive insufficient sleep, and to have obesity than neurotypical peers. However, little is known about how parents of these children approach promoting sleep and balanced screen time. We conducted semistructured interviews with 24 parents of children aged 8-15 years with a diagnosis of N/MHD to assess barriers and facilitators to promoting sleep and balanced screen time.

The school environment plays an important role in children's diets and overall health, and policies for universal free school meals have the potential to contribute to positive child health outcomes. This systematic review evaluates studies examining the association between universal free school meals and students' school meal participation rates, diets, attendance, academic performance, and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as school finances. The search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

The intersection of metformin and inflammation.

Am J Physiol Cell Physiol

May 2021

Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences and Barnstable Brown Diabetes and Obesity Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.

The biguanide metformin is the most commonly used antidiabetic drug. Recent studies show that metformin not only improves chronic inflammation by improving metabolic parameters but also has a direct anti-inflammatory effect. In light of these findings, it is essential to identify the inflammatory pathways targeted by metformin to develop a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of action of this drug.

Traumatic musculoskeletal injury (MSI) may involve changes in corticomotor structure and function, but direct evidence is needed. To determine the corticomotor basis of MSI, we examined interactions among skeletomotor function, corticospinal excitability, corticomotor structure (cortical thickness and white matter microstructure), and intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS)-induced plasticity. Nine women with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) 3.

Resilience of food, energy, and water systems to a sudden labor shortage.

January 2021

Department of Civil Engineering, Merrimack College, 315 Turnpike Street, North Andover, MA 01845 USA.

Past research studies have acknowledged the role of resilience in policies and decisions to address disruptive events and proposed frameworks to measure it. The scope and diversity of these unwanted events highlight the need to evaluate the resilience of a system to a specific disruptive circumstance. The broad scope and generic form of the previous studies limit their usefulness as a practical tool for analyzing the factors affecting system performance.

Less than 1% of children in the United States concurrently meet guidelines for fruit/vegetable intake, physical activity, screen time, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Prior evidence suggests that parents of this 1% potentially cope with stress differently. This qualitative study used a positive deviance-based approach to locate mothers whose children avoided negative feeding outcomes despite being 'high-risk' for obesity.

Background: During 2010, the US Department of Agriculture updated the school meals standards, including three progressively decreasing sodium targets. The Target 1 standards went into effect in 2014, but during 2018, the US Department of Agriculture delayed the Target 2 standards until 2024 and eliminated the Target 3 standards citing concerns regarding the availability and acceptability of lower-sodium foods. In addition, there are currently no sugar standards, and it is unknown whether sugar is substituted for salt in lower-sodium school foods.

Recent research of healthcare providers identifies the critical role that professional identity plays in the provision of healthcare, interactions within healthcare teams, and healthcare provider perceptions of their work. However, much remains to be known regarding the role of professional identity in routine interactions for emerging healthcare professionals. This study enriches understandings of this particular issue by exploring pediatric residents' experiences with a structured hand-off tool at a children's hospital in the western United States.

In this scoping review, we examine the current state of literature on weight-related Multiple Health Behavior Change (MHBC). Specifically, we investigate: (1) MHBC versus single health behavior change (SHBC) interventions and (2) simultaneous versus sequential MHBC approaches. Secondarily, we explore (3) attributes that predict success in MHBC, and (4) the utilization of theoretical frameworks.

Next steps in mechanisms of inflammaging.

Autophagy

December 2020

Departments of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences, Barnstable Brown Diabetes and Obesity Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA.

Striking age-related changes occur in the human immune system, beginning in the sixth decade of life. Age is a non-modifiable, universal risk factor that results in the dysregulation of many cellular homeostatic processes. The decline in immune cell macroautophagy/autophagy and the increased generation of proinflammatory cytokines during agingfuels the development of diseases in the elderly.

Biomechanical properties of abdominal organs under tension with special reference to increasing strain rate.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, United States; School of Science and Engineering, Merrimack College, 315 Turnpike St, 100 Palmisano Hall, North Andover, MA 01845, United States. Electronic address:

Currently, abdominal finite element models overlook the organs such as gallbladder, bladder, and intestines, which instead are modeled as a simple bag that is not included in the analysis. Further characterization of the material properties is required for researchers to include these organs into models. This study characterized the mechanical properties of human and porcine gallbladder, bladder, and intestines using uniaxial tension loading from the rates of 25%/s to 500%/s.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the independent and additive effects of two interventions (milk and resistance training) on nutrient adequacy, body composition, and bone health in adolescent girls. The experimental design consisted of four experimental groups of adolescent girls 14-17 years of age: (1) Milk + resistance training [MRT];  = 15; (2) Resistance training only [RT];  = 15; (3) Milk only [M]  = 20; (4) Control [C]  = 16.

Metformin Enhances Autophagy and Normalizes Mitochondrial Function to Alleviate Aging-Associated Inflammation.

Cell Metab

July 2020

Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA; Barnstable Brown Diabetes and Obesity Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA. Electronic address:

Age is a non-modifiable risk factor for the inflammation that underlies age-associated diseases; thus, anti-inflammaging drugs hold promise for increasing health span. Cytokine profiling and bioinformatic analyses showed that Th17 cytokine production differentiates CD4 T cells from lean, normoglycemic older and younger subjects, and mimics a diabetes-associated Th17 profile. T cells from older compared to younger subjects also had defects in autophagy and mitochondrial bioenergetics that associate with redox imbalance.
