Background: Despite the initiation of minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, the majority of patients who undergo anorectal malformation repair still experience functional bowel issues in childhood, including constipation and fecal incontinence. In this study, we evaluate the functional outcomes of a procedure in which magnetic resonance imaging guidance is used during initial laparoscopic repair to better locate the epicenter of the sphincter muscle complex and pelvic floor with the goal of more accurate placement of the neoanus and improved functional outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective chart review evaluated demographic, operative, and outcome details for patients who underwent this procedure.

Introduction: Ipsilateral fracture of the femur and tibia, known by the moniker "floating knee," is a serious injury that primarily results from high-energy trauma. Up to 53% of patients with floating knee injuries have concurrent ligamentous injuries, with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) as the most commonly affected ligament. Approximately 10% of multi-ligament knee injuries consist of injuries to both the ACL and posterolateral corner (PLC); however, the literature reporting the management of this patient population is sparse, particularly, with a lack of consensus on the timing and protocol of surgical treatment.

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) is a rare but fatal systemic infiltrative disease with a challenging course of both diagnosis and management. Definitive diagnosis of such rare infiltrative diseases is not feasible for most centers around the world, often leading to a delay in treatment in these patients. We present a case of suspected ATTR-CM manifesting with recurrent decompensated heart failure, tachyarrhythmias, and recurrent pericardial effusion refractory to several lines of treatment.

Introduction: Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA) has become increasingly popular, although an associated learning curve can be a deterrent for some surgeons. Prior studies have addressed this learning curve in fellowship-trained arthroplasty surgeons, however the learning curve among non-fellowship-trained surgeons remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the learning curve for imageless RA-TKA related to operative time and rates of complications among two non-arthroplasty-trained orthopedic surgeons.

Introduction: Following closed reduction of hip dislocations, computed tomography (CT) is considered standard of care to identify occult fractures or intra-articular loose bodies that may be missed on X-ray. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of post-reduction X-rays and the usefulness of subsequent post-reduction CT imaging.

Methods: All patients presenting to our hospital system for traumatic hip dislocations from 2013 to 2022 were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: The purpose of this study was to report the safety and performance of aspiration thrombectomy with the Penumbra System for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) and late onset to treatment.

Methods: This is a retrospective subset analysis of a global prospective multicenter registry (COMPLETE) that enrolled adults with AIS due to LVO and a pre-stroke modified Rankin Scale score (mRS) of 0 or 1 who were treated first-line with aspiration thrombectomy either alone (A Direct Aspiration First Pass Technique [ADAPT]) or in combination with the 3D Revascularization Device (ADAPT + 3D). This subset analysis included all patients in the registry who had anterior circulation LVO, an Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score of at least 6, and late onset to treatment (>6 h from stroke onset to puncture).

Article Synopsis
  • Studies during the COVID-19 pandemic suggest a link between COVID-19 and an increased risk of acute ischemic stroke, particularly in cases of large vessel occlusion (LVO).
  • The research involved analyzing blood clots from COVID-19 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy and comparing their characteristics with those of a control group.
  • Results showed higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) in COVID-19-positive patients, indicating that systemic inflammation and endothelial injury may play significant roles in clot formation for these individuals.

After adenocarcinoma, squamous cell lung cancer is the most common type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) among non-smokers. A tissue biopsy followed by imaging (chest X-ray, computed tomography (CT) lung, and positron emission tomography (PET) scan) is the best modality for confirmation and staging of the disease. Sometimes, the histopathological appearance of squamous cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) can be confused with organizing pneumonia.

Background: Delays in endovascular reperfusion for patients with large vessel occlusion stroke are known to worsen outcomes, and the mechanism is believed to be time-dependent expansion of the ischemic infarction. In this study, we hypothesize that delays in onset to reperfusion (OTR) assert an effect on outcomes independent of effects of final infarct (FI).

Methods: We performed a subgroup analysis from the prospective multicenter COMPLETE (International Acute Ischemic Stroke Registry With the Penumbra System Aspiration Including the 3D Revascularization Device; Penumbra, Inc) registry for 257 patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion who underwent endovascular therapy with successful reperfusion (modified treatment in cerebral infarction score 2b/3).
