Enrolled nurses (ENs) play a pivotal role in the health workforce in Australia and the role is expanding in many practice settings. An EN traineeship was introduced in an acute medical/surgical setting at St Vincents & Mercy Private Hospital (STVMPH) a large metropolitan private hospital in Victoria, in 2005. Since then there has been a significant increase in the EN workforce across all clinical areas within the organisation.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in both the developed and the developing world, comprising nearly one quarter of all female cancers. The most advanced forms of treatment, including mastectomy, may produce a five-year survival rate of 75% or more for certain types of cancer. For women experiencing breast cancer, breast reconstruction is often a positive option that can enhance quality of life and plays a significant role in a woman's recovery from breast cancer.

The incidence of total hip arthroplasty after hip arthroscopy in osteoarthritic patients.

Sports Med Arthrosc Rehabil Ther Technol

July 2010

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, St Vincent and Mercy Private Hospital, 159 Grey Street, East Melbourne 3002, Victoria, Australia.

Objective: To assess the incidence of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in osteoarthritic patients who were treated by arthroscopic debridement and to evaluate factors that might influence the time interval from the first hip arthroscopy to THA.

Design: Retrospective clinical series

Methods: Follow-up data and surgical reports were retrieved from 564 records of osteoarthritic patients that have had hip arthroscopy between the years 2002 to 2009 with a mean follow-up time of 3.2 years (range, 1-6.

Objective: To examine the evidential basis underpinning the monitoring of skin temperature and core-peripheral temperature gradient as elements of hemodynamic assessment in critically ill and adult cardiac surgical patients.

Methods: Twenty-six studies examining the efficacy of skin temperature or temperature gradient as markers of hemodynamic status were selected as part of an integrative review.

Results: Evidence pertaining to the efficacy of these parameters as markers of cardiac function is equivocal and has not been well appraised in the adult cardiac surgical population.

Objective: Foot temperature has long been advocated as a reliable noninvasive measure of cardiac output despite equivocal evidence. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the relationship between noninvasively measured skin temperature and the more invasive core-peripheral temperature gradients (CPTGs), against cardiac output, systemic vascular resistance, serum lactate, and base deficit.

Research Methodology: The study was of a prospective, observational and correlational design.

Purpose: Our purposes were to report the clinical outcome of autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) patients with graft hypertrophy compared with that of unoperated ACI patients and to longitudinally assess the effects of graft hypertrophy debridement.

Methods: We divided 170 knee ACI patients with a minimum of 2 years' follow-up into groups according to the need for reoperation after ACI and the findings at surgery. Group A (n = 73) comprised patients who did not undergo reoperation, group B (n = 61) comprised patients who underwent reoperation and had findings unrelated to the repair, and group C (n = 36) comprised patients who underwent reoperation and had isolated graft hypertrophy.

Information regarding the quality of autologous chondrocyte implantation repair is needed to determine whether the current autologous chondrocyte implantation surgical technology and the subsequent biologic repair processes are capable of reliably forming durable hyaline or hyaline-like cartilage in vivo. We report and analyze the properties and qualities of autologous chondrocyte implantation repairs. We evaluated 66 autologous chondrocyte implantation repairs in 57 patients, 55 of whom had histology, indentometry, and International Cartilage Repair Society repair scoring at reoperation for mechanical symptoms or pain.

Reported results for patellar ACI include a mixed population of patients having or not a concomitant correction of the extensor mechanism. No study has reported separate outcome for those two patellar ACI subgroups. Forty four patients were included in this study designed to compare the outcome of patellar ACI with extensor realignment (group A) to patellar ACI with normal patellofemoral tracking (group B).

Between October 2000 and December 2003, 252 autologous chondrocyte implants were performed in 183 patients. Eighty lesions showed overgrowth of the subchondral bone plate under the chondral lesion, this was termed a "bone boss." Thirty-seven were on the medial femoral condyle (MFC), 18 on the lateral femoral condyle (LFC), 21 in the trochlea and 4 on the patella.

High tibial osteotomy has been generally accepted as a useful treatment for unicompartment osteoarthritis of the knee to improve a patient's quality of life. Few studies have examined the outcome from the patient's perspective. A survival analysis of one to twenty-one years was conducted on 67 knees including analysis of the patients' satisfaction level with this procedure.
