Article Synopsis
  • Mycotoxins, which are harmful fungal toxins, can negatively affect pregnant women and their babies, but there's limited information about their exposure in the US, particularly among pregnant women.
  • This study analyzed mycotoxin exposure in a group of 50 women during pregnancy by testing samples of their serum and urine at various stages using advanced liquid chromatography techniques.
  • Results indicated the presence of several mycotoxins, with notable detection rates for ochratoxin A and deoxynivalenol, showing some women exceeded recommended daily intake levels for these toxins.

Purpose: The patient-acceptable symptom state (PASS) is a threshold score on a patient-reported outcome measurement beyond which patients consider themselves "well." Our purpose was to establish the PASS for the numeric rating scale (NRS) for pain in a 1-year postoperative hand surgery population.

Methods: This retrospective study included adult patients undergoing non-shoulder upper-extremity surgery at a single, tertiary medical center identified over a 9-month period.

Background: Pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis involves lipid secretion by sebaceous glands, Malassezia colonization, and an inflammatory response with skin barrier disruption. Each of these pathways could be modulated by diet, obesity, and nutritional supplements. Current treatment options provide only temporary control of the condition; thus, it is essential to recognize modifiable lifestyle factors that may play a role in determining disease severity.

Background: Despite the increased risk of attrition for women and minority residents during orthopaedic residency, there is currently a paucity of research examining the training environment of these residents. To address this, we examined how well-being constructs may differ for women or minority residents compared with their peers, and whether these residents report experiencing more mistreatment during residency.

Questions/purposes: (1) How does the psychologic wellbeing of women and minority residents compare with that of their peers regarding the constructs of burnout, lifestyle satisfaction, social belonging, and stereotype threat? (2) Do reported mistreatment experiences during residency differ among women and minority residents compared with their peers? (3) Is there a difference in the proportion of women and minority orthopaedic residents with thoughts of leaving residency compared with their peers?

Methods: Seventeen orthopaedic residency programs in the 91 programs comprising the Collaborative Orthopaedic Educational Research Group agreed to participate in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Atopic dermatitis (AD), or eczema, is a chronic skin condition characterized by severe itching, dryness, and redness, leading to a growing interest in alternative treatments away from traditional methods and costly biologics.
  • This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral nutritional supplements, probiotics, and vitamins on AD symptoms by analyzing studies from various medical databases published between 1993 and 2023.
  • Findings showed weak overall evidence for nutritional supplements in relieving AD symptoms, though specific probiotics like Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Ligilactobacillus salivarius showed promise, highlighting the need for larger clinical trials to confirm their efficacy.

The electrocardiographic pattern of early repolarization (ER) is relatively common in the general population. In patients presenting to the emergency room with chest pain, it can be particularly challenging to distinguish ER from life-threatening subtle ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A 37-year-old male presented to the emergency department with sudden-onset, severe, non-radiating, central chest pain.

Article Synopsis
  • NAFLD and HFpEF share common risk factors like obesity and diabetes, prompting this study to explore serum metabolites linking the two conditions.
  • A retrospective analysis of 89 patients with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD showed that 41.6% had HFpEF, and out of 1151 detected metabolites, 53 were associated with HFpEF, predominantly lipid metabolites.
  • The study suggests that altered lipid metabolism may be a significant mechanism connecting HFpEF and NAFLD.

Limited studies assess the efficacy of vitamin K administration in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). However, vitamin K is commonly used to treat elevations in international normalized ratio (INR) in these patients with the intended benefit of reducing bleeding risk. This retrospective, single-center cohort study aimed to evaluate the impact of vitamin K administration on INR in patients with CLD.
