Despite the high frequency of pregnancies complicated by abnormal glucose metabolism associated with obesity, methylmercury (MeHg) metabolism in pregnant women with abnormal glucose metabolism is unclear. We aimed to elucidate the MeHg tissue distribution in obese female mice with abnormal glucose metabolism and their fetuses. Female C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or a standard diet (Ctrl) for 12 weeks and mated.

Relatively elevated concentrations of arsenic, lead, and mercury are toxic to the kidneys. However, it is unknown whether kidney function is influenced by these metals in the general population without kidney diseases and without known exposure to these metals. We did a retrospective analysis of data collected from 58,864 outpatients in Germany from January 2014 to October 2022 undergoing measurements of arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Oil-based drilling cutting residues (OBDCRs) are among the primary solid wastes generated during shale gas exploration and development. Utilizing existing equipment to transform OBDCRs into ceramsites appears to be a feasible and resource-efficient approach. In this study, building ceramsites were prepared with OBDCRs incorporating with fly ash (a byproduct of coal combustion) as raw materials.

Developing efficient and sustainable carbon sorbent for mercury vapor (Hg) capture is significant to public health and ecosystem protection. Here we show a carbon material, namely graphdiyne with accessible sp-hybridized carbons (HsGDY), that can serve as an effective "trap" to anchor Hg atoms by strong electron-metal-support interaction, leading to the in-situ adsorption-coupled-oxidation of Hg. The adsorption process is benefited from the large hexagonal pore structure of HsGDY.

Objective: Due to the growing demand for personal health monitoring in extreme environments, continuous monitoring of core temperature has become increasingly important. Traditional monitoring methods, such as mercury thermometers and infrared thermometers, may have limitations in tracking real-time fluctuations in core temperature, especially in special application scenarios such as firefighting, military, and aerospace. This study aims to develop a non-invasive, continuous core temperature prediction model based on machine learning, addressing the limitations of traditional methods in extreme environments.

The pore structure characteristics of coal significantly influence its gas adsorption and desorption capacity, as well as gas migration, playing a crucial role in the development of coalbed methane and the management of gas-related disasters. To investigate the pore distribution characteristics of coal in-depth, pore data for coal samples with varying degrees of metamorphism were obtained using low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LPGA-N), low-pressure CO adsorption (LPGA-CO) methods, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Multiscale pore size distributions were constructed for three types of coal samples.

The growing interest in insect protein as an alternative to conventional protein sources is driven by the need for sustainable options with low environmental impact. While insect-based proteins provide significant nutritional benefits, ensuring their safety requires robust analytical methods and access to reliable matrix-matched certified reference materials. Currently, the availability of such materials for assessing inorganic and organic contaminants in insect proteins is limited.

Risk factors for asthma include genetic, host, and environmental factors such as allergens, smoking, and exposure to chemicals. Heavy metals from air pollution or contaminated water and food can also trigger asthma. This study aimed to identify the biological exposure levels of blood lead, mercury, and cadmium, and determine the association of asthma with single and multiple exposures to these heavy metals using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted between 2008 and 2013.

As a green and highly efficient coal seam penetration enhancement technology, liquid CO phase change fracturing (LCPCF) technology has a great deal of promise to advance gas extraction and CO geological storage. A series of investigations were conducted using low-temperature liquid N adsorption (LT-N) adsorption, CO adsorption, CT scanning, and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) to elucidate further the effect of LCPCF on the coal's pore structure. These experiments aimed to characterize coal's internal pore structure parameters and investigate 3D pore structure changes before and after LCPCF treatment at varying fracturing displacements.

Applying organic fertilizers enriches soil with essential nutrients and organic matter. However, the trace elements (TE) often present in organic fertilizers-such as chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As)-can pose food safety risks. Continuous use of organic amendments can lead to the accumulation of TE in the soil, increasing their uptake by plants and potential risks to human health.

Contaminant body burdens are determined by complex interactions between contaminant inputs into the environment, local ecological dynamics, and organismal ontogeny. Although a naturally occurring element, mercury (Hg) is a potent neurotoxin, commonly assessed in contaminant body burdens. Anthropogenic activity has impacted its spatial distribution, resulting in regional 'hotspots' with elevated Hg concentrations.

The formulation of reasonable concentration classification standards can significantly enhance the protection of populations against atmospheric heavy metals, and the development of these standards should be grounded in national-level probabilistic risk assessment to establish multiple grading benchmarks. In this study, the probabilistic health risk assessment model was used for the first time to assess the health risks of hazardous metals [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and vanadium (V)] based on a publication dataset containing 57,737 PM-bound heavy metal samples from China. Our results showed that the average non-carcinogenic risk attributed to heavy metals in all provinces of China was less than 1.

With the rapid development of adsorbents for removal of elemental mercury (Hg) from coal combustion flue gas, the preparation of adsorbents with superior performance, lower cost and environmental friendliness remains an important challenge. An incipient wetness impregnation method followed by in-situ selenization was used to load copper selenide (CuSe) onto the surface of optimal magnetic biochar (OMBC). The results showed that CuSe significantly enhanced the Hg removal performance of the OMBC, and CuSe loading ratio of 10 % (10CuSe/OMBC) had the best Hg removal performance.

This study examines the interlink between long-term (1979-2024) trends of Hg contamination in sediments and commercial target fish species (Sargocentron rubrum, Diplodus sargus) and industrial Hg loads and their modes of entry to the marine system, using Haifa Bay (HB) in northern Israel and unpolluted reference sites as a case study. Historically, Hg levels in sediments and fish in HB fluctuated in response to industrial discharge from a former PVC factory. Despite a drastic regulatory reduction during the 1990s and the factory's closure in 2004, Hg levels in target fish species have shown an unexpected increasing trend, at rates of 1.
