Herein, we have used a simple synthetic strategy to access a novel non-sulfur fluorescent molecular probe coumarin and 1,8-napthyridine conjugated probe DNCS. The developed probe has great selectivity and sensitivity for detecting Hg ions. Ringed (Pusa hispida), bearded (Erignathus barbatus), spotted (Phoca largha), and ribbon (Histriophoca fasciata) seals are ice-associated seals that are important subsistence resources for coastal Alaska Native people. These seals are also mid- to upper trophic level Arctic predators and primary prey of polar bears (Ursus maritimus). We analyzed concentrations of 19 trace elements in seal liver, kidney, muscle, and blubber, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and vanadium due to their potential toxicity.

This study analyzed surface water from the River Swat, Pakistan, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, multivariate statistical techniques, and US-EPA risk assessment models to evaluate the concentrations, distribution, pathways, and potential risks of arsenic (As) and heavy metals, including chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb). The results revealed significant correlations (p ≤ 0.01) among metals that indicated common pollution sources, likely influenced by anthropogenic point and non-point activities.

A novel probe NIR8 decorated with colorimetric, fluorometric, turn-on, and NIR properties was designed and synthesized using the chromenylium-cyanine platform for sensitive and selective quantification of Hg in real samples. The interaction between the probe and Hg resulted in the opening of the closed spirolactam ring of the chromenylium-cyanine platform, leading to a notable color shift from yellow to green. Concurrently, ratiometric spectral changes at 380 and 725 nm for UV-Vis and signal enhancement at 755 nm for fluorescence were observed.
