Objective: While approaches for utilizing student course evaluations (SCEs) have been discussed in the literature, there remain opportunities to identify ideal practices for SCEs. Thus, the objective of this project was to generate consensus on best practices in creating, administering, and using SCEs.

Methods: A modified Delphi approach was utilized to generate a set of items based on the literature and prior work.

Purpose: The purpose of this feasibility study was to determine the effectiveness of an interprofessional led low-fidelity simulation program over three timepoints on maternal caregivers' perceived stress, sense of competence and discharge readiness for care of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) infants requiring neonatal cardiac surgery.

Design And Methods: The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was administered to simulation and non-intervention groups at three timepoints: prenatal period, Cardiac Acute Care Unit (CACU) transfer, and rooming-in. Parental Sense of Competence (PSOC) was measured at timepoint two and three, and Readiness for Hospital Discharge (RDHS) was measured at timepoint three for the simulation group.

Acute Focal Dystonia as a Presentation of Uncontrolled Hyperglycemia.

Cureus

October 2024

Neurology, Piedmont Healthcare, Columbus, USA.

Hyperglycemia-induced involuntary movements (HIIM) include tremors, hemichorea-hemiballismus (HCHB), and more rarely, dystonia. Presentations may vary, but hyperintensity involving the basal ganglia area on the T1 sequence of MRI brain remains a commonality.  We report the occurrence of focal dystonia with uncontrolled hyperglycemia but no focal abnormalities on MRI.

Introduction: Evidence-based principles in enhanced recovery programs (ERPs) demonstrate substantial improvement in patient outcomes. Determining which latent variables predict composite outcomes could refine ERP pharmacotherapy recommendations.

Methods: Using R, pharmacotherapy data were modeled from an existing dataset of adult elective colorectal surgery patients.

Malaria is among the deadliest infectious diseases. Over 200 million annual clinical malaria cases are reported and more than half a million people, mostly children, die every year. The most advanced RTS,S/AS01 vaccine based on the circumsporozoite protein (CSP), targets sporozoite liver infection but achieved modest efficacy.

Linear enamel hypoplasias (LEHs) are development defects appearing as lines or grooves on enamel surfaces. Forming when physiological stressors disrupt developing teeth, LEHs provide retrospective insight into stress experienced in early development. Here, LEHs in Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were observed with respect to decade of birth, whether an individual was transferred from the free-ranging colony to the captive facility during probable crown formation periods, and matriline of birth.

Our current understanding of postpartum people's functioning while managing substance use disorder (SUD) recovery is limited. This study explored whether having a SUD impacts maternal functioning and examined the reliability of the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF) in postpartum people with SUDs. We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional survey ( = 141) by administering the BIMF and a demographic questionnaire with a sample of postpartum people with SUD ( = 48) and a comparative sample of postpartum people without SUD ( = 93).

Background: Chronic low back pain secondary to degenerative disc disease is a significant public health issue worldwide, contributing to substantial health care burdens and patient disability. Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) has emerged as a promising surgical solution, offering benefits such as disc height restoration, reduced neural compression, and improved spinal alignment. This study evaluates the efficacy of stand-alone ALIF using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages, structural femoral head allografts, and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in treating discogenic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease.

Towards automated phenotype definition extraction using large language models.

Genomics Inform

October 2024

Stanford Health Care, Stanford, CA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Electronic phenotyping uses various data analysis methods, including machine learning and natural language processing, to define patient characteristics, but the current process is slow and labor-intensive.
  • Large language models could automate phenotype definition extraction but have reliability issues and potential risks of generating misleading information.
  • The study aims to create a standard evaluation set for assessing large language models' outputs and to test different prompting methods, showing promising results that still need human validation to ensure accuracy and efficiency in phenotype extraction.

  • Neuroepithelial tumors resembling pilocytic astrocytoma have been reclassified by the WHO as high-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP), highlighting their unique characteristics and rarity.
  • An 83-year-old woman experienced progressive lower-extremity weakness, leading to the discovery of a neuroepithelial tumor in the conus medullaris, which is an uncommon site for this type of tumor.
  • The case emphasizes the need for clinicians to consider HGAP in differential diagnoses for spinal cord masses, as it represents a novel classification of a rare condition.

Article Synopsis
  • - This report details a unique case of urethral adenocarcinoma in situ with gastric-type features in a 74-year-old woman who experienced recurrent urinary tract infections and urinary blockage symptoms.
  • - An MRI showed a urethral diverticulum, leading to a surgical procedure (diverticulectomy) where pathology samples confirmed the rare cancer type.
  • - The case emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to keep a wide range of possible diagnoses in mind even when symptoms are unusual, and highlights the necessity for further studies to improve detection and treatment strategies for such conditions.
