Feedback Medical Ltd., Broadway, Bourn, Cambridge CB23 2TA, UK. Electronic address:

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) plays an important role in diagnosis and grading of brain tumors. Although manual DCE biomarker extraction algorithms boost the diagnostic yield of DCE-MRI by providing quantitative information on tumor prognosis and prediction, they are time-consuming and prone to human errors. In this paper, we propose a fully-automated, end-to-end system for DCE-MRI analysis of brain tumors.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is one of the most common cranial neuropathies. Pathologies located alongside the long nerve can also cause its mechanical compression or secondary involvement in the inflammatory process, and thus cause pain. TN is characterised by severe paroxysmal unilateral facial pain in the innervation area of branches I-III of the nerve V when provoked by light touch or slight movement.

Integrative genomics reveal a role for MCPIP1 in adipogenesis and adipocyte metabolism.

Cell Mol Life Sci

December 2020

Department of General Biochemistry, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa 7, 30-387, Kraków, Poland.

Obesity is considered a serious chronic disease, associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1-induced protein-1 (MCPIP1) is an RNase decreasing stability of transcripts coding for inflammation-related proteins. In addition, MCPIP1 plays an important role in the regulation of adipogenesis in vitro by reducing the expression of key transcription factors, including C/EBPβ.

Keratinocyte-specific ablation of Mcpip1 impairs skin integrity and promotes local and systemic inflammation.

J Mol Med (Berl)

December 2019

Department of General Biochemistry, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa 7, 30-387, Krakow, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • MCPIP1 regulates mRNA stability for inflammatory cytokines, and its deficiency in mice causes severe multiorgan inflammation and early death.
  • Conditional deletion of Mcpip1 in mouse epidermis leads to increased expression of inflammatory factors and disrupts keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation.
  • Loss of epidermal Mcpip1 results in damaged skin integrity, spontaneous skin disease, and systemic inflammation, highlighting its importance in maintaining skin health.

Optimizing the Quality of Colorectal Cancer Screening Worldwide.

Gastroenterology

January 2020

Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana. Electronic address:

Screening, followed by colonoscopic polypectomy (or surgery for malignant lesions), prevents incident colorectal cancer and mortality. However, there are variations in effective application of nearly every aspect of the screening process. Screening is a multistep process, and failure in any single step could result in unnecessary morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: The treatment planning (TP) in high-dose-rate (HDR) endobronchial brachytherapy (EB) can be based on various forms of imaging. In the case of lung cancer, one-dimensional or two-dimensional imaging is standard. The dose coverage of the target (planning target volume - PTV) and organs at risk (OAR) is unknown, because the doses are calculated on the basis of the dose points.

It is well known that Prospero homeobox 1 (PROX1) is a crucial regulator of lymphangiogenesis, that reprograms blood endothelial cells to lymphatic phenotype. However, the role of PROX1 in tumor progression, especially in angiogenesis remains controversial. Herein, we studied the role of PROX1 in angiogenesis in cell lines derived from follicular thyroid cancer (FTC: FTC-133) and squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland (SCT: CGTH-W-1) upon knockdown.

Background: Assessment of measurable residual disease (MRD) is rapidly transforming the therapeutic and prognostic landscape of a wide range of hematological malignancies. Its prognostic value in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has been established and MRD measured at the end of induction is increasingly used to guide further therapy. Although MRD detectable immediately before allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is known to be associated with poor outcomes, it is unclear if or to what extent this differs with different types of conditioning.

The chronically inflamed mucosa in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can additionally be infected by bacteria, which results in an acute exacerbation of the disease (AECRS). Currently, AECRS is universally treated with antibiotics following the guidelines for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS), as our understanding of its microbiology is insufficient to establish specific treatment recommendations. Unfortunately, antibiotics frequently fail to control the symptoms of AECRS due to biofilm formation, disruption of the natural microbiota, and arising antibiotic resistance.

Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine with the Division of Dentistry in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland.

Enzymes of the cytochrome P-450 (CYP 450) which belong to the family of oxidase enzymes, are present in cells of all organisms and play a major role in the first phase of xenobiotic metabolism. There are several isoenzymes of CYP 450 that show differences in the speed of metabolism: poor-, extensive- and ultra-rapid. Nicotine undergoes biotransformation in the liver mainly by the CYP2A6 isoform of CYP 450.
