Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous syndrome substantiating the urgent requirement for endotype-specific biomarkers. Dysbalance of fibrosis and fibrolysis in asthmatic lung tissue leads to reduced levels of the inflammation-protective collagen 4 (COL4A3).
Objective: To delineate the degradation of COL4A3 in allergic airway inflammation and evaluate the resultant product as a biomarker for anti-IgE therapy response.

Objective: Evaluation of software tools for segmentation, quantification, and characterization of fibrotic pulmonary parenchyma changes will strengthen the role of CT as biomarkers of disease extent, evolution, and response to therapy in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients.
Methods: 418 nonenhanced thin-section MDCTs of 127 IPF patients and 78 MDCTs of 78 healthy individuals were analyzed through 3 fully automated, completely different software tools: YACTA, LUFIT, and IMBIO. The agreement between YACTA and LUFIT on segmented lung volume and 80th (reflecting fibrosis) and 40th (reflecting ground-glass opacity) percentile of the lung density histogram was analyzed using Bland-Altman plots.

A high-dose, accelerated escalation schedule during subcutaneous allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is safe and well-tolerated in adults. However, there are no data in children and adolescents. Allergic reactions to stings of Hymenoptera species may be severe and are potentially fatal deviations of the immunological response observed in healthy individuals. However, venom-specific immunotherapy (VIT) is an immunomodulatory approach able to cure venom allergy in the majority of affected patients. Allergic diseases of the (upper and lower) airways, the skin and the gastrointestinal tract, are on the rise, resulting in impaired quality of life, decreased productivity, and increased healthcare costs. As allergic diseases are mostly tissue-specific, local sampling methods for respective biomarkers offer the potential for increased sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, local sampling using noninvasive or minimally invasive methods can be cost-effective and well tolerated, which may even be suitable for primary or home care sampling.

Most chronic and acute lung diseases have no cure, leaving lung transplantation as the only option. Recent work has improved our understanding of the endogenous regenerative capacity of the lung and has helped identification of different progenitor cell populations, as well as exploration into inducing endogenous regeneration through pharmaceutical or biological therapies. Additionally, alternative approaches that aim at replacing lung progenitor cells and their progeny through cell therapy, or whole lung tissue through bioengineering approaches, have gained increasing attention.
