Introduction: The Australian medical board, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has recently introduced new regulations mandating providers of cosmetic surgery undertake a clinical screen for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in all potential cosmetic surgery patients. The assessment must be conducted by the surgeon using a validated psychological screening tool. The aims of this paper are to discuss the key clinical characteristics of BDD before reviewing currently validated screening tools that would meet this new regulatory requirement, and which may be most applicable to a busy plastic surgery practice.

Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery and Laboratory for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, University Hospital Erlangen, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Erlangen, Germany.

Lipomatosis of peripheral nerves (LPN, also known as fibrolipomatous or lipofibromatous hamartoma of peripheral nerves) is a very rare, benign, intraneural, tumorous lesion that predominantly involves the median nerve but may rarely affect any peripheral nerve. Recently, PIK3CA mutations have been reported in macrodactyly, a rare condition related to LPN, and in other localized lipomatous overgrowth syndromes. In this retrospective study, we report 6 cases of FPN involving the median nerve (4 of them identified among 570 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome who underwent surgical decompression at our center from 2012 to 2022 and two seen in consultation by one of the authors).

Background: Pediatric facial palsy represents a rare multifactorial entity. Facial reanimation restores smiling, thus boosting self-confidence and social integration of the affected children. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic review of microsurgical workhorse free functional muscle transfer procedures with emphasis on the long-term functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial outcomes.

Keloids are benign tumours caused by abnormal wound healing driven by increased expression of cytokines, including activin A. This study compared effects of activins on normal and keloid-derived human dermal fibroblasts and investigated a novel treatment for keloids using follistatin. Normal skin and keloid tissue samples from 11 patients were used to develop primary fibroblast cultures, which were compared in terms of their histology and relevant gene (qRT-PCR and RNAseq) and protein (ELISA) expression.

Background: Prominent ears are by far the most common congenital ear deformity. Many techniques have been described using one or a combination of 3 basic methods: cartilage cutting, cartilage weakening and pure cartilage shaping techniques. The ideal otoplasty technique should yield a natural correction of the deformity, with low recurrence rates and with little risk of complications.

Background: Breast capsular contracture remains an elusive problem faced by plastic surgeons and is the leading long-term complication after breast implantation. Follistatin (Fst) is a protein with known anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic properties and has the potential to limit the severity of diseases associated with inflammation and fibrosis such as capsular contracture. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Fst288 on capsular fibrosis around silicone implants in a mouse model.

Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery, 253 Wattletree Rd., Malvern VIC 3142, Australia.

Overzealous resection of the labia minorum is a significant complication of labioplasty. Knowledge and understanding of reconstructive plastic surgical principles are required to manage such challenging complications. We report a case of iatrogenic labial asymmetry that was reconstructed with a cross-labial flap.

There are limited techniques described in the literature on how to lower the nipple-areola complex following surgery to the breast. We present a case of successful correction of a high-riding nipple using a Z-plasty technique with an 8-year follow-up in a breast reconstruction patient. The technique described may also be applicable to cases of high-riding nipples following aesthetic breast surgery such as reduction mammaplasty.
