Background: Xerostomia (dry mouth) is a common yet severe problem, causing difficulty with eating, speaking, dental caries, and discomfort. Access issues to dental services, including cost and availability of dental practitioners, can delay timely diagnosis and management of dry mouth. Thus, there is a need for innovative approaches to manage xerostomia, involving non-dental primary care health practitioners.

Animal models of thrombosis play a critical role in research, helping us understand the mechanisms of hemostasis and thrombus formation, as well as in the screening of anti-thrombotic drugs. This study aimed to evaluate the safety profile of two anticoagulants in murine research and to assess coagulation parameters, including prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), using the VETSCAN VSpro coagulation analyzer in wild-type (C57BL/6) mice following administration of anticoagulants. Two experiments were conducted involving a total of sixty wild-type mice that received two common anticoagulants.

The oral pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis has a general O-glycosylation system which it utilises to modify hundreds of proteins localised outside of the cytoplasm. The O-glycan is a heptasaccharide that includes a putative L-fucose and N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) as the 5th and 6th sugar residues respectively. The putative L-fucose is expected to be synthesized as GDP-L-fucose involving the enzymes Gmd (PGN_1078) and Fcl (PGN_1079), while GalNAc is putatively epimerised from GlcNAc by GalE (PGN_1614).

Autoerotic asphyxial deaths are a rare but recurring phenomenon, the most common modality of which involves neck compression. Autoerotic neck compression can involve any compression to the neck during individual sexual activity performed to heighten arousal. This retrospective study examines 72 such deaths occurring in Australia between 2000 and 2022.

Background: Haptics-enhanced virtual reality (VR-haptic) simulation in dental education has evolved considerably during the past decade, representing a promising resource of simulation-based training opportunities to support conventional practice. We aim to summarize current literature on the applications of VR-haptics in learning, practicing, and teaching dental education.
Methods: A literature search was performed using PubMed, focusing on research articles published between January 2010 and January 2024.

Screening is widely believed to facilitate early detection and improve health outcomes; however, recent evidence questions its overall benefits, highlighting the need for a critical assessment of cancer screening programs. The simplicity of clinical oral examination and the easy accessibility of the oral cavity make oral cancer a suitable candidate for opportunistic screening. Despite this uniqueness, studies that solidly assess the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of oral cancer screening are scanty, and the only large randomized trial undertaken so far shows limited evidence of mortality reduction through population screening.

Background And Aims: An effective surgical adhesive must possess strength, biodegradability, flexibility, non-toxicity, and the ability to accommodate to tissue movement. However, existing adhesives in the market lack some of these crucial properties. Both synthetic cyanoacrylate and natural fibrin glue have been explored for sutureless oral surgery, but they come with specific limitations.

Objectives: To compare the use of orifice barriers (OB) in root-filled teeth (RFT) between specialist endodontic practitioners (SEP) and general and other specialist practitioners (GDP+), and identify common materials, reasons for selection, and techniques.
Methods: An online survey was distributed to SEP and GDP+ practising in Australia. Demographic and multiple-choice questions relating to material selection and technique choices were asked to evaluate and relate usage patterns to practising and training backgrounds.

Background: Oral cancer remains a significant public health issue. General practitioners (GPs) can play an important role in raising awareness of oral cancer.
Objective: This paper explores why providing advice relating to modifiable risk behaviours associated with oral cancer and undertaking routine oral cancer screening are important for GPs in clinical practice.

Tumour metastasis to the jaw is an uncommon finding. When it does present, it is usually evidence of widespread metastatic disease and represents an unfavourable prognostic indicator. The clinical presentation of metastatic disease in the jaw can vary and may occur in the oral soft tissues, subcutaneous tissues adjacent to bone, mandible or maxillary alveolus and can mimic dental pathology.

Objective: Cementochronology is a method for assessing chronological age and identifying other life-history parameters (LHPs) from incremental lines of acellular extrinsic fibre cementum (AEFC) in most mammalian teeth. The aim of this study is to question the accuracy of this technique when used as a stand-alone age estimation method, and to examine how the number of observers may alter accuracy.
Design: This research is based on an extant clinical study conducted on 10 human teeth with the patients' anamnestic data.
Information generated from longitudinally-sampled microbial data has the potential to illuminate important aspects of development and progression for many human conditions and diseases. Identifying microbial biomarkers and their time-varying effects can not only advance our understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms, but also facilitate early diagnosis and guide optimal timing of interventions. However, longitudinal predictive modeling of highly noisy and dynamic microbial data (e.

Dental caries among long-term care (LTC) residents is a persistent and complex problem driven by social and structural factors. Systems thinking may be useful in considering novel approaches to reducing disease. This study aimed to develop a system dynamics model to simulate the progression of dentate older adults in LTC through caries severity states and estimate the effects of 3 intervention scenarios on the progression of caries: preventive topical fluoride (TF), arrest of caries with silver diamine fluoride (SDF), and a combination of TF and SDF.

Background: Anticoagulants, renowned for their role in preventing blood clot formation, have captivated researchers' attention for the exploitation of their potential to inhibit cancer in pre-clinical models.
Objectives: To undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of anticoagulants in murine cancer research models. Further, to present a reference tool for anticoagulant therapeutic modalities relating to future animal pre-clinical models of cancer and their translation into the clinic.

Epoxytiglianes are a novel class of diterpene esters. The prototype epoxytigliane, EBC-46 (tigilanol tiglate), is a potent anti-cancer agent in clinical development for local treatment of a range of human and animal tumors. EBC-46 also consistently promotes wound re-epithelialization at the treatment sites, mediated via activation of classical protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms.

Digital transformation has disrupted many industries but is yet to revolutionize health care. Educational programs must be aligned with the reality that goes beyond developing individuals in their own professions, professionals wishing to make an impact in digital health will need a multidisciplinary understanding of how business models, organizational processes, stakeholder relationships, and workforce dynamics across the health care ecosystem may be disrupted by digital health technology. This paper describes the redesign of an existing postgraduate program, ensuring that core digital health content is relevant, pedagogically sound, and evidence-based, and that the program provides learning and practical application of concepts of the digital transformation of health.
