Article Synopsis
  • Safe and timely liberation from venovenous ECMO could lower the costs, duration, and complications associated with the treatment, but effective methods for this process are not well studied.
  • The research involved a systematic review of existing literature to find practical criteria and protocols for liberation from ECMO, including a variety of study types like randomized trials and guidelines.
  • The findings revealed diverse practices in ECMO liberation influenced by clinician preferences, highlighting a need for more research to establish standardized strategies and better understand the factors affecting liberation outcomes.

Background: Previous works show that noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are on the rise in developing nations, including Ethiopia, in the background of preexisting communicable diseases (CDs). Data on hospital admission in sub-Saharan Africa are scarce, particularly prospectively collected, and hence this study was done to close the gap in acquiring accurate diagnosis usually faced with retrospective data. We aimed to describe medical admission patterns, their outcomes and determinants at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (ACSH) in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection results in a spectrum of clinical presentations. Evidence from Africa indicates that significantly less COVID-19 patients suffer from serious symptoms than in the industrialized world. We and others previously postulated a partial explanation for this phenomenon, being a different, more activated immune system due to parasite infections.

Chronic immune activation has been considered as the driving force for CD4 T cell depletion in people infected with HIV-1. Interestingly, the normal immune profile of adult HIV-negative individuals living in Africa also exhibit chronic immune activation, reminiscent of that observed in HIV-1 infected individuals. It is characterized by increased levels of soluble immune activation markers, such as the cytokines interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, TNF-α, and cellular activation markers including HLA-DR, CD-38, CCR5, coupled with reduced naïve and increased memory cells in CD4 and CD8 subsets.
