[Perspectives in future asthma therapy].

Harefuah

April 2012

Asthma Care and Education Unit, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Sapir Medical Center, Meir Hospital Kfar Saba, and Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Five to ten percent of all asthmatics, many dozens of millions of patients all over the world, do not respond to maximal medical therapy, including systemic steroids, and the toll of treating them constitutes about eighty percent of the total cost of managing all asthmatics. Other asthmatics who do respond to medical therapy either are not compliant with their medications or suffer from disabling adverse effects. The future therapy of asthma will concentrate on finding medical solutions to these sub-groups of patients but the entire asthmatic population will enjoy its achievements.

Patients with occupational contact dermatitis in Israel: quality of life and social implications.

Soc Work Health Care

November 2007

Social Services, Meir Hospital Kfar Saba, 56 Tchernichovski Street, Kfar Saba, Israel.

One of the most common occupational diseases is skin disease caused as a result of contact with work-related materials or exacerbated by them. Although occupational-related skin disease is a common condition, it is not considered to be a serious one and, therefore, has not received satisfactory attention in the psycho-social literature or in the social work profession. In our study, 70 occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) patients were interviewed by telephone regarding psychological, social, economic, and subjective issues related to the disease.

Postoperative chylous ascites--the urologist's view.

Drugs Today (Barc)

October 2002

Department of Urology, Sapir Medical Center, Meir Hospital Kfar Saba and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Postoperative chylous ascites is a rare complication of retroperitoneal surgery caused by incidental disruption of major retroperitoneal lymphatics and is associated with serious mechanical, nutritional and immunological consequences due to the constant loss of protein and lymphocytes. Different management schemes may be used successfully to treat chylous ascites. Treatment should be adjusted to the severity of the lymphatic leak and its consequences.

Comparative genomic hybridization in polycythemia vera and essential thrombocytosis patients.

Cancer Genet Cytogenet

July 2001

Department of Medicine, Meir Hospital Kfar-Saba and Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocytosis (ET) are clonal chronic myeloproliferative disorders originating from a multipotent stem cell. Bone marrow examinations reveal chromosomal abnormalities in 15-43% of PV patients and 5% of ET patients, but no specific recurring abnormality has been found to date. We aimed to find cytogenetic aberrations in PV and ET by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), a relatively new molecular cytogenetic technique.

Association between alopecia and response to aggressive chemotherapy in patients with Hodgkin's disease.

Med Hypotheses

November 1999

Department of Medicine, Meir Hospital Kfar Saba and Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

The clinical significance and implications of absence of alopecia and/or neutropenia in patients treated with chemotherapy for malignant disease is unknown. We hypothesized that there is a common mechanism of resistance to the effects and the adverse effects of anticancer treatment, which may have clinical implications. To evaluate this hypothesis, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the charts of 17 consecutive patients with Hodgkin's disease who received at least 4 courses of combination chemotherapy (ABVD or MOPP/ABV).

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and soluble interleukin-6 receptor (sIL-6R) were detected in supernatants of cultures of B chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) lymphocytes. Phorbol-12-myristate 13 acetate (PMA) caused a decrease in the levels of IL-6 in 14 out of 16 cultures and an increase in levels of sIL6R in all 15 cases. The effect of pokeweed mitogen (PWM) was variable and not significant.

IL-3-dependent mast cells undergo apoptosis upon removal of IL-3, an event that is prevented by the addition of stem cell factor (SCF) acting through its receptor c-kit, suggesting that SCF provides a mechanism to allow mast cells to survive and to differentiate in tissues in the relative absence of IL-3. This observation is consistent with the thesis that the microenvironment, in part, controls mast cell number and viability by modulating SCF production and release. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a second factor, TGF-beta 1, was capable of modifying the SCF-mediated survival pathway.

Adriamycin containing combination chemotherapy (ACCC) is usually delivered to patients with stages III, IV diffuse large cell (DLCL) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Although this mode of therapy is also commonly used in other intermediate grade lymphomas, it's role in the latter subset of patients is not well defined. In a retrospective analysis we evaluated and compared the outcome of previously untreated DLCL and non-DLCL intermediate grade lymphoma patients who received as initial therapy, "first generation" ACCC.
