Purpose: To classify sagittal spinopelvic alignment patterns of non-ambulatory scoliosis patients with paraplegia based on lateral sitting radiographs and explore their relation to clinical background and physical function.

Methods: We reviewed non-ambulatory scoliosis patients with paraplegia, excluding those with prior spinal surgery from a single-center database. Alignment patterns in sitting postures were classified into slump sitting (SS) and erect sitting (ES) based on the most posterior edge of the spine's location on lateral sitting radiographs.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood eosinophil count is a significant biomarker for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but its precise role in the disease still needs further exploration.
  • A study with 93 COPD patients showed that 19.3% had eosinophilic COPD, and while eosinophil counts correlated with some blood parameters, they also indicated lung structural changes related to the disease.
  • The findings suggest that elevated eosinophils may contribute to alveolar damage and thickening of airway walls in COPD patients lacking asthma, highlighting the need for further research on this inflammation type in COPD.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 21 patients, 15 had traditional spinal fusion while 6 had growth-friendly surgery, revealing an average final height increase, but many still had poor respiratory function.
  • * Results showed a correlation between thoracic height and lung capacity, suggesting that adequate height is necessary for optimal respiratory health, indicating a potential need for growth-friendly procedures even in this patient group.

Purpose: To investigate changes in postoperative mobility status in patients with ASD, and the determining factors that influence these changes and their impact on clinical outcomes, including the rate of home discharge and long-term mobility.

Methods: A total of 299 patients with ASD who underwent multi-segment posterior spinal fusion were registered in a multi-center database were investigated. Patient mobility status was assessed using walking aids and classified into five levels (1: independent, 2: cane, 3: walker, 4: assisted, and 5: wheelchair) preoperatively, at discharge, and after 2 years.

Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the relation between global spinal alignment and the necessity of walking aid use in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) and to investigate the impact of spinal fixation on mobility status after surgery.

Methods: In total, 456 older patients with ASD who had multi-segment spinal fixation surgery and were registered in a multi-center database were investigated. Patients under 60 years of age and those unable to walk preoperatively were excluded.

Purpose: To determine the most valid bone health parameter to predict mechanical complications (MCs) following surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD).

Methods: This multicenter study retrospectively examined the records of patients who had undergone fusion of three or more motion segments, including the pelvis, with a minimum two-year follow-up period. Patients with moderate and severe global alignment and proportion scores were included in the study and divided into two groups: those who developed MCs and those who did not.

Background And Aims: The clinical introduction of hepcidin25 (Hep25) has led to a more detailed understanding of its relationship with ferroportin (FP) and divalent metal transporter1 in primary iron overload syndromes (PIOSs). In 2012, we proposed a classification of PIOSs based on the Hep25/FP system, which consists of prehepatic aceruloplasminemia, hepatic hemochromatosis (HC), and posthepatic FP disease (FP-D). However, in consideration of accumulated evidence on PIOSs, we aimed to renew the classification.

Patients with primary vertebral fracture (VF) are at high risk of re-fracture and mortality. However, approximately two-thirds of patients with VFs receive minimal clinical attention. The current study aimed to investigate the factors associated with asymptomatic VFs in middle-aged and elderly individuals who underwent resident health examinations.

Here we report the case of a 71-year-old woman who complained of lower back and left leg pain due to rod fracture following instrumented fusion using the lateral lumbar interbody fusion and multi-rod technique to treat adult spinal deformity. Radiographic images revealed bilateral rod fractures at L4-5 and pseudoarthrosis at L2-5; lower lumbar lordosis was minimal, but upper lumbar hyperlordosis was noted. The patient underwent revision surgery, which included posterior spinal instrument replacement, L3-4 and L4-5 lateral lumbar interbody fusion cage removal, and L4 vertebral body replacement via the anterior approach.

Background: Instrumentation failure (IF) is a major complication associated with growth-sparing surgery for pediatric spinal deformities; however, studies focusing on IF following each surgical procedure are lacking. We aimed to evaluate the incidence, timing, and rates of unplanned return to the operating room (UPROR) associated with IF following each surgical procedure in growth-sparing surgeries using traditional growing rods (TGRs) and vertical expandable prosthetic titanium ribs (VEPTRs).

Methods: We reviewed 1,139 surgical procedures documented in a Japanese multicenter database from 2015 to 2017.

Aim/introduction: This study aims to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of diabetic symmetric sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes registered in the Japan Diabetes Complication and its Prevention Prospective (JDCP) study.

Materials And Methods: In the study, 6338 patients with diabetes who had been treated by diabetes specialists were registered in 2007-2009. Of these, patients with type 2 diabetes who could be evaluated for DSPN were analyzed using test, chi-square test, and logistic regression analyses.

Introduction: Scoliosis is the three-dimensional (3D) deformity of the spine. Scoliosis curvatures, such as the lower lumbar curve and the angle of the upper endplate of the sacrum observable on radiographs, are associated with postoperative outcomes; however, the relationship between postoperative outcomes and sacral morphology remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate sacral morphology in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to clarify its relationship with wedge-shaped deformity of the first sacral vertebra and radiographic parameters.

Introduction: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a disorder with a three-dimensional spinal deformity and is a common disease affecting 1-5% of adolescents. AIS is also known as a complex disease involved in environmental and genetic factors. A relation between AIS and body mass index (BMI) has been epidemiologically and genetically suggested.

Background And Aims: The future development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients after sustained virologic response (SVR) is an important issue. The purposes of this study were to investigate pathological alterations in organelle of the liver of SVR patients and to characterize organelle abnormalities that may be related to carcinogenesis after SVR.

Methods: The ultrastructure of liver biopsy specimens from patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and SVR were compared to cell and mouse models and assessed semi-quantitatively using transmission electron microscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the quasispecies composition of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in patients, which may affect how the virus behaves and responds to treatments.
  • Researchers developed a method using next-generation sequencing to identify different HCV genome sequences present in a single patient's serum over time.
  • The findings revealed that multiple dominant viral species can coexist in a patient's serum and evolve independently, highlighting the complexity of HCV infection management.
