Analgesic action of acupuncture and moxibustion: a review of unique approaches in Japan.

The mechanism of acupuncture analgesia (AA) is one of the most widely researched topics in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) based on modern medical methodology. Endogenous opioid-mediated mechanisms of acupuncture have been well established since the 1970s. In this review, we have covered the progress of AA research by Japanese investigators.

Acupuncture on the blood flow of various organs measured simultaneously by colored microspheres in rats.

We examined how acupuncture affected the blood flow of muscle, kidney, stomach, small intestine, brain, lung, heart, spleen and liver. Wistar rats anesthetized with urethane (n = 27) were allocated into the control (n = 10), ST-7 (Hsia-Kuan, n = 10) and LI-4 (Hoku, n = 7) groups. To measure organ blood flow, colored microspheres (CMS) were injected through a catheter positioned in the left ventricle and blood samples were drawn from the femoral artery.

Do Japanese style acupuncture and moxibustion reduce symptoms of the common cold?

We summarize the results from a series of investigations of Japanese style acupuncture and moxibustion therapies on symptoms of the common cold that have been conducted (FTLE 1999-03, supported by the Foundation for Training and Licensure Examination in Anma- Massage- Acupressure, Acupuncture and Moxibustion). We also discuss the various interventions and concerns that we faced during these investigations. The subjects were students and teachers.

To investigate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment for lumbar spinal canal stenosis and herniated lumbar disc and to clarify the mechanisms in an animal experiment that evaluated acupuncture on sciatic nerve blood flow. In the clinical trial, patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis or herniated lumbar disc were divided into three treatment groups; (i) Ex-B2 (at the disordered level), (ii) electrical acupuncture (EA) on the pudendal nerve and (iii) EA at the nerve root. Primary outcome measurements were pain and dysesthesia [evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS)] and continuous walking distance.

Acupuncture anesthesia and analgesia for clinical acute pain in Japan.

Acupuncture anesthesia has been practiced in China since about 1960. In Japan, Hyodo reported 30 cases of acupuncture anesthesia in 1972. However, from around 1980, the direction of acupuncture investigations turned from anesthesia to analgesia.

Three-dimensional analyses of touch domes in the hairy skin of the cat paw reveal morphological substrates for complex sensory processing.

The three-dimensional morphology of the innervation of touch domes in the hairy skin folds of cat forepaws was investigated by the confocal laser scanning microscopic analyses of sections stained immunocytochemically with primary antibodies for protein gene product 9.5, neurofilament 200 and cytokeratin 20 in combination with transmission electron microscopic observations. One square centimeter of interdigital skin can contain as many as 68 touch domes.

Trigger point acupuncture for treatment of knee osteoarthritis--a preliminary RCT for a pragmatic trial.

Background: There is evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture treatment in knee osteoarthritis, but it remains unclear which acupuncture modes are most effective. We evaluated the effects of trigger point acupuncture on pain and quality of life in knee osteoarthritis patients, compared with acupuncture at standard points, and sham acupuncture.

Methods: Thirty patients (27 women, 3 men; aged 61-82 years) with non-radiating knee osteoarthritis pain for at least six months and normal neurological examination were randomised to one of three groups for the study period of 21 weeks.

Acupuncture for chronic pain in Japan: a review.

Many Japanese reports of acupuncture and moxibustion for chronic pain are not listed in medical databases such as Medline. Therefore, they are not easily accessible to researchers outside of Japan. To complement existing reviews of acupuncture and moxibustion for chronic pain and to provide more detailed discussion and analysis, we did a literature search using 'Igaku Chuo Zasshi Wed' (Japana Centra Revuo Medicina) and 'Citation Information by National Institute of Information' covering the period 1978-2006.

Neuronal response to Shepard's tones: an auditory fMRI study using multifractal analysis.

Shepard's tones are a typical example for auditory illusion. They consist in a series of computer generated tones, which prohibit relative pitch discrimination. As a result, when repetitively played in sequence, the illusion of an ever-ascending scale is evoked.

Randomised trial of trigger point acupuncture compared with other acupuncture for treatment of chronic neck pain.

Introduction: There is some evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in chronic neck pain (CNP) treatment, but it remains unclear which acupuncture modes are most effective. Objective was to evaluate the effects of trigger point acupuncture on pain and quality of life (QOL) in CNP patients compared to three other acupuncture treatments (acupoints, non-trigger point and sham treatment).

Methods: Forty out-patients (29 women, 11 men; age range: 47-80 years) from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Meiji University of Oriental Medicine, with non-radiating CNP for at least 6 months and normal neurological examination were randomised to one of four groups over 13 weeks.

Influence of bright light therapy on postoperative patients: a pilot study.

Bright light therapy is a method of maintaining or restoring the natural circadian rhythm by assisting daytime awakening using bright lights. Postoperative delirium is one of the potential complications encountered by patients receiving postoperative care in the intensive care unit (ICU), but there have been no studies on the use of light for the prevention of postoperative delirium. The objective of this study was to examine whether the circadian rhythms of patients after surgery for oesophageal cancer can be adjusted and whether the postoperative delirium crisis rate can be reduced by bright light therapy.

Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions have essential roles in thymus organogenesis. Mesenchymal cells are known to be required for epithelial cell proliferation. However, the contribution of mesenchymal cells to thymic epithelial cell differentiation is still unclear.

It is known that selected populations of lymphoid cells migrate into and from the adult thymus through blood vessels at the cortico-medullary junction and in the medulla. Here, we show that in the perivascular spaces (PVS) of mice surrounding large blood vessels, CD117-positive hematopoietic progenitor cells, CD4 single-positive (SP) and CD8SP T cells are located. However, developing thymocytes, CD25-positive cells and CD4 and CD8 double-positive cells, are not detectable in the PVS.

Alleviation of seasonal allergic symptoms with superfine beta-1,3-glucan: a randomized study.

Background: The incidence of allergic symptoms to cedar pollen has reached epidemic proportions in Japan. Intravenous injection of beta-1,3-glucan in human subjects is known to induce a T(H)1 response, whereas oral uptake does not.

Expression of Dll4 and CCL25 in Foxn1-negative epithelial cells in the post-natal thymus.

Foxn1 transcription factor is known to be essential for development of the thymic organ. We analyzed whether Foxn1 expression in thymic epithelial cells is necessary for the expression of functional molecules such as Delta-like 4 (Dll4) and CCL25, and whether maintenance of these molecular expressions depends on the Foxn1 transcription factor. We show that almost all thymic epithelial cells in the early thymus anlagen express Foxn1, and Dll4 and CCL25 are limitedly expressed in Foxn1-positive epithelial cells.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether nausea or gastric dysrhythmia, including tachygastria, which was determined by electrogastrography (EGG), were observed during optokinetic motion sickness in healthy Japanese volunteers. Twelve volunteers (9 men and 3 women) participated in the study. Quantitative analysis of muscle hardness in tetanic contractions induced by electrical stimulation in rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vivo relation between muscle hardness during an electrically induced contracting state and neuromuscular functions (M-wave and developed tension). Sixteen Sprague-Dawley rats were deeply anesthetized with urethane. Muscle hardness was measured quantitatively at the mid-portion of the gastrocnemius (GS) muscle during tetanic contractions induced by electrical stimulation (50 Hz, 100 micros duration) of the sciatic nerve or of the muscle directly.
