Comparison of cheiloscopy, odontometric, and facial index for sex determination in forensic dentistry.

Background: The "gender determination" which is an important human identification procedure not only helps in establishing the biological profile from skeletal and dental remains but also in facial reconstruction of unidentified victims.

Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze predominant types of lip prints (cheiloscopy), accuracy of mandibular canine index (MCI) (odontometric), and facial index in the study population and to identify whether any correlation among the above parameters could help forensic dentistry in solving crimes.

Materials And Methods: A pilot study was conducted in 100 individuals, 50 males and 50 females aged between 20 and 25 years.

Occipital Condyle Syndrome Caused by Isolated Bone Metastases from Thyroid Cancer.

Occipital condyle syndrome is a rare cause of pain in the head which is characterized by severe and persistent unilateral suboccipital headache with unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy. We report an elderly female who presented with dysarthria and suboccipital headache. On further evaluation, she was found to have a solitary bone metastases from thyroid cancer.

Anticoagulation Management in Patients with Valve Replacement.

Background: Prosthetic valve implantation requires postoperative prophylactic anticoagulation to preclude thrombotic events. The aim of this review is to assess the role of anticoagulation therapy in the management of valve replacement patients.

Methodology: Literature from PubMed, Embase, Medline and Google Scholar were searched using the terms "valvular heart disease", "anticoagulant", "mechanical heart valve", "bioprosthesis", "bridging", "Vitamin K antagonist (VKA)", and "acenocoumarol".

Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of mortality in the world and economic burdens on national economies. A cardiac patch approach aims at regenerating an infracted heart by providing healthy functional cells to the injured region via a film carrier substrate, and providing mechanical and electrical support. Selenium acts as an important element in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases but their health-related effects have not been fully explored.

A Rare Case of Thyrolipomatosis Presenting with Latent Hyperthyroidism.

Goiter and hyperthyroidism are fairly common problems in the Indian population. We present a 49-year-old female who presented with thyroid swelling and suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone. On evaluation, she was having latent hyperthyroidism with diffuse and soft thyroid swelling.

Post coital hemoperitoneum: The pain of love.

Acute abdominal pain in women of reproductive age is common and frequent cause for visit to emergency department which warrants emergent evaluation. We present the case of a 23-year-old nulliparous women presenting with post-coital haemoperitoneum secondary to a ruptured corpus luteum cyst. This is a rare case demonstrating the need to elicit sexual history in patients presenting with an acute abdomen in emergency department.

Decisive Role of Nuclear Imaging in a Rare Pancreatic Incidentaloma.

Pancreatic incidentalomas are increasingly recognized entities that occur as a fallout of widespread availability of high definition imaging technology. These lesions offer diagnostic dilemmas to both clinicians and radiologists alike. Nevertheless, it is the advancement in diagnostic radiology that comes to the rescue in the management of these not-so-uncommon lesions.

An Interesting Case of Retropharyngeal Lymph Nodal Metastases in a Case of Iodine-Refractory Thyroid Cancer.

Metastases to cervical lymph node are fairly common in differentiated thyroid cancer. In iodine-refractory disease, the disease may persist in the thyroid bed, cervical lymph nodes, lungs, or the bones commonly. Retropharyngeal lymph nodal involvement in thyroid cancer is unusual and may even be the presenting complaint.

Microbiology, clinical spectrum and outcome of peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis in India: Results from a multicentric, observational study.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is a major risk factor for drop out of patients on continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) and automated PD (APD). Factors affecting PD-related peritonitis and centre-specific microbiological data are lacking in India. A multicentric prospective observational study was designed to overcome the gaps in the existing data regarding causative organism and outcome.

Added fructose as a principal driver of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a public health crisis.

Fatty liver disease affects up to one out of every two adults in the western world. Data from animal and human studies implicate added sugars (eg, sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup) in the development of fatty liver disease and its consequences. Added fructose in particular, as a component of added sugars, may pose the greatest risk for fatty liver disease.

Retrospective Approach to Evaluate Interferences in Immunoassay.

Background: Despite the increase in sensitivity and specificity of immunoassay technique over years, analytical interference remains to be major area of concern. The interfering substances are endogenous substances that are natural, polyreactive antibodies as heterophilic or auto antibodies, or human anti-animal antibodies together with other unsuspected binding proteins that are unique to the individual. Interfering substances can interfere with the reaction between analyte and reagent antibodies in immunoassay resulting in false positive or negative values.

Acute Alopecia: Evidence to Thallium Poisoning.

Thallium is a toxic heavy metal often involved in criminal poisonings and occasionally in accidental poisoning. Here, we report a case of acute, nonintentional thallium poisoning due to thallium-contaminated alternative medicine for its rarity and to create awareness about the combination of rapid, diffuse alopecia with neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms among practitioners, professionals, public, and policymakers.

Neonatal solid tumors.

Background: Neonatal tumors are different from tumors of the older children and knowledge gained from treating older children can not be extrapolated to neonates. Neonates have immature physiology and their haematopoietic and immune systems are not fully developed and the response to therapy is unpredictable. Hence it is imperative to study these tumors as separate entity.

Diabetic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis: a retrospective survival analysis across different socioeconomic groups.

Background: Diabetic kidney disease is the leading cause of stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) in India. Renal replacement therapy (RRT) is accessible to very few patients because of socioeconomic deprivation. We studied the effect of diabetes and socioeconomic status on the outcome of patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD).

EUS-guided paclitaxel injection as an adjunctive therapy to systemic chemotherapy and concurrent external beam radiation before surgery for localized or locoregional esophageal cancer: a multicenter prospective randomized trial.

Background And Aims: OncoGel (Protherics Salt Lake City, Inc, Salt Lake City, UT) is paclitaxel (PTX) formulated in a thermosensitive, biodegradable copolymer for focused cytotoxicity and radiosensitization. A phase 2a study suggested that EUS-guided PTX injection into esophageal tumors subsequently receiving radiotherapy was safe.

Methods: In an international multicenter, prospective, randomized phase 2b study, patients with local or locoregional adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus/gastroesophageal junction and eligible for neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) before surgery were randomized to standard of care (SOC) plus EUS-guided PTX injection or SOC alone.
