Background: Until now, no study has reported the combined effect of genetic variants of HOTAIR and NME1 towards breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis. Hence, the aim of the present study is to determine the risk of breast cancer development with HOTAIR (rs920778 C > T and rs1899663 G > T) and NME1 (rs16949649 T > C and rs2302254 C > T) genetic polymorphisms in the Indian population for the first time.
Materials And Methods: To investigate the genetic association of these four SNPs, we conducted a population-based case-control study involving 1011 subjects (502 histologically confirmed BC patients and 509 disease-free controls) using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.

Identification of modifier genes predisposing to breast cancer (BC) phenotype remains a significant challenge and varies with ethnicity. The genetic variability observed in DNA repair genes may modulate the cell's ability to repair the damaged DNA and hence, evaluation of genetic variants in crucial DNA damage repair genes is of clinical importance. We performed the present study to evaluate the role of ERCC2-Lys751Gln, hOGG1-Ser326Cys, and XRCC1-Arg399Gln gene polymorphisms on the risk of BC development and its molecular profile in Indian women.

Background: The 90-day BCR-ABL1 (breakpoint cluster region-Abelson 1) level has been one of the accepted milestones for predicting the molecular response in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The rate of decline in BCR-ABL1 has been considered a better predictor of the response but has not been uniformly accepted. A paucity of evidence is available to predict the accuracy of the rate of decline in the Indian context.

Background: In India, and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the majority of emergency care is provided by frontline providers without specialty training in emergency medicine. In order to fill this need, we developed the Indian Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine (PGDEM), a 1-year skills-focused course for practicing doctors. This article describes the curriculum development and implementation as well as the follow-up survey conducted to gauge the impact of the course.

Large diurnal intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation is a single most independent risk factor for glaucoma progression besides raised IOP. The major limitation of Goldman applanation tonometer (GAT) is its inability to measure night IOP without disturbing the patient's sleep. We discussed the methods available for the 24-hour IOP monitoring and its relevance in glaucoma.

Background: Workers in cement warehouses of Kerala are enduring long-standing exposure to cement dust, which is considered genotoxic.
Objective: To evaluate the extent of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity caused due to exposure of cement dust among those working in cement warehouses.
Methods: The study included 82 cement warehouse workers and 82 age-matched individuals with no exposure to cement dust.

Purpose: Escalated BEACOPP (bleomycin, etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone) improves overall survival (OS) in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) relative to ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) therapy. However, the associated higher cost and toxicity discourage clinicians from prescribing it. Identifying high-risk patients and administering escalated BEACOPP remains an effective strategy.

In leptomeningeal metastasis (LM), malignant lung cancer cells reach the sanctuary site of the leptomeningeal space through haematogenous or lymphatic route and thrive in the leptomeninges because of restricted access of chemotherapeutic agents across the blood brain barrier. The incidence of LM is 3%-5% in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients; the incidence is higher in patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangement or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. However, the real-world burden of undiagnosed cases may be higher.

Background: Abduction of the arm has been used for ultrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation. We evaluated the influence of arm position on sonographic visualization and cannulation of the axillary vein in patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
Methods: Sixty patients scheduled to undergo surgery under general anaesthesia with controlled mechanical ventilation were included in this prospective randomized study.

Unlabelled: A case of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) and high level of 5-oxoprolinuria were noticed in an elderly female of 66 years who had multiple risk/precipitating factors and recovered well with N-acetyl cysteine infusion. This is reported in view of its rarity and to create awareness of this entity among medical students and practicing physicians who handles such cases in emergency room or critical care unit. Moreover they have to remember and investigate the cases of metabolic acidosis for 5-oxoprolinuia especially in susceptible individuals who are on paracetamol with or without other precipitating factors.

Aim: To quantify the levels of miRNA-146a in subgingival plaque samples, and correlate with periodontal and cardiac parameters, in chronic periodontitis patients with and without coronary heart disease.
Methods: The study involved 90 subjects; 30 patients with chronic periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CP + CHD) as part of Group I; group II comprising 30 with chronic periodontitis alone (CP); and group III comprising 30 systemically healthy controls. Demographic variables, periodontal parameters such as plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment levels, cardiac parameters such as total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride levels, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were recorded from the patients.

Purpose: This phase 1b study investigated the maximum tolerated dose (MTD; primary objective), safety, pharmacokinetics, and antitumor activity (secondary objectives) of eribulin combined with carboplatin in patients with solid tumors and, in particular, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Methods: Two dose-escalation schemes were evaluated with carboplatin, at an area under the curve (AUC) of either 5 or 6 mg/mL·min. Eribulin, dose-escalated from 0.

Introduction: Anterior knee pain is a major problem following Bone-patellar-tendon-bone graft (BPTB) use in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. We hypothesized that filling the donor defect sites with bone-graft substitute would reduce the anterior knee symptoms in ACL reconstruction surgeries.
Material And Methods: Patients operated for ACL-deficient knee between March 2012 and August 2013 using BPTB graft were divided into two treatment groups.

Background: Ectatic coronary segments are nidi for thrombus formation due to altered flow dynamics and stasis-an important component of Virchow's triad. Ectasia accompanied by an adjacent coronary stenosis with or without a plaque event can lead to acute myocardial infarctions complicated by huge thrombus burden.
Case Summary: Here, we present a case of a young male with acute inferior wall myocardial infarction complicated by Type IV coronary artery ectasia of the right coronary artery and huge thrombus burden that was refractory to conventional methods of thrombus management like thrombo-suction and intracoronary cocktails including tenecteplase.
