Background: Until now, no study has reported the combined effect of genetic variants of HOTAIR and NME1 towards breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis. Hence, the aim of the present study is to determine the risk of breast cancer development with HOTAIR (rs920778 C > T and rs1899663 G > T) and NME1 (rs16949649 T > C and rs2302254 C > T) genetic polymorphisms in the Indian population for the first time.

Materials And Methods: To investigate the genetic association of these four SNPs, we conducted a population-based case-control study involving 1011 subjects (502 histologically confirmed BC patients and 509 disease-free controls) using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.

Identification of modifier genes predisposing to breast cancer (BC) phenotype remains a significant challenge and varies with ethnicity. The genetic variability observed in DNA repair genes may modulate the cell's ability to repair the damaged DNA and hence, evaluation of genetic variants in crucial DNA damage repair genes is of clinical importance. We performed the present study to evaluate the role of ERCC2-Lys751Gln, hOGG1-Ser326Cys, and XRCC1-Arg399Gln gene polymorphisms on the risk of BC development and its molecular profile in Indian women.

Mol Cell Biochem

June 2020

Department of Biochemistry, Center for Excellence in Genomic Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, 625 021, Tamil Nadu, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of early mortality globally and is linked to genetic factors, particularly variants of Glutathione S-Transferases (GSTs).
  • A study involving 392 CKD patients and 202 healthy individuals from Southern India was conducted to investigate the relationship between GST polymorphisms and CKD progression.
  • Results indicated that the GSTM1-null genotype significantly increases the risk of developing CKD and progressing to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), suggesting its potential as a genetic marker for disease severity.

Background: The 90-day BCR-ABL1 (breakpoint cluster region-Abelson 1) level has been one of the accepted milestones for predicting the molecular response in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The rate of decline in BCR-ABL1 has been considered a better predictor of the response but has not been uniformly accepted. A paucity of evidence is available to predict the accuracy of the rate of decline in the Indian context.

Background: In India, and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the majority of emergency care is provided by frontline providers without specialty training in emergency medicine. In order to fill this need, we developed the Indian Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine (PGDEM), a 1-year skills-focused course for practicing doctors. This article describes the curriculum development and implementation as well as the follow-up survey conducted to gauge the impact of the course.

Large diurnal intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation is a single most independent risk factor for glaucoma progression besides raised IOP. The major limitation of Goldman applanation tonometer (GAT) is its inability to measure night IOP without disturbing the patient's sleep. We discussed the methods available for the 24-hour IOP monitoring and its relevance in glaucoma.

Purpose: Escalated BEACOPP (bleomycin, etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone) improves overall survival (OS) in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) relative to ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) therapy. However, the associated higher cost and toxicity discourage clinicians from prescribing it. Identifying high-risk patients and administering escalated BEACOPP remains an effective strategy.

Management of leptomeningeal metastases in non-small cell lung cancer.

Indian J Cancer

November 2019

Department of Medical Oncology, Sr. Consultant Medical Oncologist, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.

In leptomeningeal metastasis (LM), malignant lung cancer cells reach the sanctuary site of the leptomeningeal space through haematogenous or lymphatic route and thrive in the leptomeninges because of restricted access of chemotherapeutic agents across the blood brain barrier. The incidence of LM is 3%-5% in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients; the incidence is higher in patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangement or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. However, the real-world burden of undiagnosed cases may be higher.

Article Synopsis
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) has a circadian rhythm that affects glaucoma progression and is typically monitored over 24 hours to assess fluctuations, peaks, and spikes.
  • Many glaucoma management decisions are made based on only one or two IOP measurements, despite recognizing the importance of diurnal variation.
  • The review examined the history and current technologies of patient-directed self-tonometry, highlighting the need for a standardized method to study diurnal variation through proper research.

Unlabelled: A case of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) and high level of 5-oxoprolinuria were noticed in an elderly female of 66 years who had multiple risk/precipitating factors and recovered well with N-acetyl cysteine infusion. This is reported in view of its rarity and to create awareness of this entity among medical students and practicing physicians who handles such cases in emergency room or critical care unit. Moreover they have to remember and investigate the cases of metabolic acidosis for 5-oxoprolinuia especially in susceptible individuals who are on paracetamol with or without other precipitating factors.
