Background: DPANN archaea, including Woesearchaeota, encompass a large fraction of the archaeal diversity, yet their genomic diversity, lifestyle, and role in natural microbiomes remain elusive. With an archaeal assemblage naturally enriched in Woesearchaeota and steep vertical geochemical gradients, Lake Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte) provides an ideal model to decipher their in-situ activity and ecology.
Results: Using genome-resolved metagenomics and phylogenomics, we identified highly diversified Woesearchaeota populations and defined novel halophilic clades.

The most prominent and persistent feature of the eastern Mediterranean Levantine Basin (LB) is the warm anticyclonic Cyprus Eddy (CE) located above the Eratosthenes Seamount (ESM). This eddy periodically couples with two smaller cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies, the South Shikmona Eddy (SSE) and North Shikmona Eddy (NSE), which form downstream. The reason for the zonal drift of the CE center and the formation mechanism of the CE, SSE and NSE is largely debated today, yet the upwelling and biological productivity of the LB can be strongly impacted by the local dynamics.

Despite the urgent need for accurate and robust observations of microplastics in the marine environment to assess current and future environmental risks, existing procedures remain labour-intensive, especially for smaller-sized microplastics. In addition to this, microplastic analysis faces challenges due to environmental weathering, impacting the reliability of research relying on pristine plastics. This study addresses these knowledge gaps by testing the robustness of two automated analysis techniques which combine machine learning algorithms with fluorescent colouration of Nile red (NR)-stained particles.

Microplastic (MP) research faces challenges due to costly, time-consuming, and error-prone analysis techniques. Additionally, the variability in data quality across studies limits their comparability. This study addresses the critical need for reliable and cost-effective MP analysis methods through validation of a semi-automated workflow, where environmentally relevant MP were spiked into and recovered from marine fish gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) and blue mussel tissue, using Nile red staining and machine learning automated analysis of different polymers.

The analysis of protein fold usage, similar to codon usage, offers profound insights into the evolution of biological systems and the origins of modern proteomes. While previous studies have examined fold distribution in modern genomes, our study focuses on the comparative distribution and usage of protein folds in ribosomes across bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. We identify the prevalence of certain 'super-ribosome folds,' such as the OB fold in bacteria and the SH3 domain in archaea and eukaryotes.

An intercomparison exercise on "microplastics in sediment" was carried out by five laboratories using samples collected in the Bay of Marseille in September 2021. The results from different extraction and identification methods varied depending on the type and size classes of MPs, and was better than 80 % for the size class >300 μm and for the fragments. The variability in recovery rates can be attributed to the choice of reagents and extraction protocols.

Dinitrogen (N2) fixation represents a key source of reactive nitrogen in marine ecosystems. While the process has been rather well-explored in low latitudes of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, other higher latitude regions and particularly the Indian Ocean have been chronically overlooked. Here, we characterize N2 fixation and diazotroph community composition across nutrient and trace metals gradients spanning the multifrontal system separating the oligotrophic waters of the Indian Ocean subtropical gyre from the high nutrient low chlorophyll waters of the Southern Ocean.

Aquatic humic substances (AHS) are defined as an important components of organic matter, being composed as small molecules in a supramolecular structure and can interact with metallic ions, thereby altering the bioavailability of these species. To better understand this behavior, AHS were extracted and characterized from Negro River, located near Manaus city and Carú River, that is situated in Itacoatiara city, an area experiencing increasing anthropogenic actions; both were characterized as blackwater rivers. The AHS were characterized by C nuclear magnetic ressonance and thermochemolysis GC-MS to obtain structural characteristics.

Droughts are becoming more intense and frequent in the Brazilian semiarid because of El Niño and global climate changes. The Jaguaribe River estuary is a semiarid ecosystem that experiences a reduction in freshwater discharges due to droughts and river damming. We present kmindex, an approach that can index thousands of metagenomes and perform sequence searches in a fraction of a second. Rationale: The efficiency of selected ion monitoring (SIM) and selected reaction monitoring (SRM) analyses for the quantification of three mono-, di- and tri-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes (IP , IPSO and HBI III, respectively), often used as proxies for the occurrence of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice or the adjacent open waters, was compared.
Methods: Gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS)/SIM and GC/MS/MS/SRM analyses were carried out on dilute solutions made from purified standards of these three HBIs, and then on hydrocarbon fractions of several sediment and sea ice sample extracts. More efficient and specific SRM transitions were selected after collision-induced dissociation of each precursor ion at different collision energies.

Trace metal concentrations in the particulate fractions (MP), dissolved fractions (MD) and sediments (MS), such as Ba, Cu, Co, Cr, Pb, Ni and Zn, were determined during the dry season of the largest open sea delta of Americas, the Parnaíba River Delta (Brazil). This study aimed to comprehend the distribution, dynamic changes of metal speciation and environmental quality index of trace metals in the particulate fractions and subsurface sediments in scenario of major marine influence over the delta. The trace metals bound to suspended particulate material (SPM) from weathering the drainage basin exhibited a removal trend under increases in salinity and pH.

Gorgonian octocorals are threatened by global and local stressors that can act synergistically to affect their health. In recent years, mass mortality events triggered by marine heatwaves have caused demographic declines in Mediterranean gorgonian populations that may lead to their collapse. Potential changes in microbiome composition under stressful conditions may further increase the susceptibility of the gorgonian holobiont to disease.

The major input of mercury (Hg) to the Arctic is normally ascribed to long-range transport of anthropogenic Hg emissions. Recently, alarming concentrations of Hg in meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) were reported with bedrock as the proposed source. Reported Hg concentrations were 100 to 1000 times higher than in known freshwater systems of Greenland, calling for independent validation of the extraordinary concentrations and conclusions.

After a Telomere Lengthening in juvenile stage, a progressive telomere shortening occurs with age despite higher telomerase level.
