To compare the long-term stone-free status of patients who underwent fragmentation of stones followed by active basketing versus stone dusting and spontaneous passage following flexible ureteroscopic treatment for lower calyceal stones. The dusting or fragmentation methods were randomly assigned to patients who were scheduled to undergo RIRS for only renal lower calyceal stones between February 2019 and May 2022, prospectively. Stone-free rates were determined after 3 months by non-contrast computed tomography and patient demography; preoperative and postoperative follow-up data of both groups were evaluated comparatively.

Fasting Ramadan in patients with T1DM - Saudi Arabia versus other countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diabetes Metab Syndr

January 2023

Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Dubai Hospital, Dubai Academic Health Cooperation, United Arab Emirates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares patient attitudes towards fasting during Ramadan among Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients in Saudi Arabia and 12 other mostly Muslim countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Roughly 90% of Saudi T1DM patients chose to fast, despite experiencing higher rates of diabetes-related complications, such as hypoglycemia, compared to their counterparts in other countries.
  • Notably, the decision to fast for Saudi patients was less affected by the pandemic, and their patterns of hypoglycemic events showed distinct timing differences compared to patients from other nations.

Endocan, or endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1), is a potential inflammatory marker implicated in endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between serum endocan levels and the presence and severity of endothelial dysfunction, and the relationships with serum intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), adiponectin (a marker of inflammation), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels, and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in obese subjects. Serum endocan, ICAM-1, adiponectin, hsCRP levels, and cIMT were evaluated in 76 obese women (BMI > 30 kg/m) and 53 controls (BMI < 25 kg/m).

Introduction Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may have an increased risk for the development of systemic and metabolic pathogenesis such as cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance (IR), diabetes mellitus (DM) and dyslipidemia. However, there is no reliable marker to show the relation. Fetuin-A is an adipokine whereas paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein-linked enzyme to demonstrate oxidative stress.

Aim: Omentin-1, an adipokine primarily secreted from visceral adipose tissue, regulates metabolic homeostasis, whereas carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a valid marker for early diagnosis of atherosclerosis. We aimed to investigate whether polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is related to levels of omentin-1 and CIMT and demonstrate the association with cardiovascular risk.

Methods: A prospective case-control study was performed on 47 PCOS patients and 35 healthy subjects.

Article Synopsis
  • Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is a serious condition mainly affecting diabetic or immunocompromised individuals, leading to significant health risks.
  • A study analyzed 32 patients treated at a care center, developing a new classification system that combines MRI findings, cranial nerve dysfunction, and clinical grading.
  • Results indicated that higher clinical grades correlate with worse survival outcomes, while surgery didn't affect discharge status; the proposed classification could help predict patient prognosis effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, particularly in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) compared to those with spontaneous pregnancies.
  • It found that these skin conditions were more prevalent in IVF pregnancies, with a notable association between multiple pregnancies and longer progesterone treatment duration in the IVF group.
  • The research faced limitations due to its retrospective nature and being conducted at a single center, but it suggests that increased progesterone levels might contribute to the development of these pregnancy-related skin issues.
