Objective: To investigate the effect of peritonization at cesarean section on postoperative vital signs which was thought to be an indirect finding secondary to increased sympathetic activity originated from pain caused by stretched peritoneum.

Methods: One hundred and thirty-three pregnant women were randomized to four groups; Closure of parietal peritoneum only (group 1; n = 32), closure of visceral and parietal peritoneums (group 2; n = 32), no closure of peritoneums (group 3; n = 32) and closure of the visceral peritoneum only (group 4; n = 32). All participants were monitored for blood pressure, pulse activity and hourly urinary output during the first postoperative 24 h.

Resveratrol can prevent CCl₄-induced liver injury by inhibiting Notch signaling pathway.

Histol Histopathol

July 2016

Department of Histology and Embryology, Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how a signaling system called Notch is affected in a liver disease model in rats, and how a substance called resveratrol might help.
  • Rats were split into four groups: one that got no treatment, one that received a harmful chemical (CCl₄), one that got the chemical plus resveratrol, and one that got only resveratrol.
  • The results showed that the CCl₄ group had more signs of liver damage and higher Notch levels, but the group that received resveratrol had less liver damage and lower Notch levels.

Background: We aimed to evaluate periarticular multimodal drug injection (PMDI) in bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

Methods: In 154 knees of 77 patients, PMDI was administered intraoperatively through the regions other than posterior capsule to one knee; other knee was control.

Results: Drug-injected knees had lower visual analog scale scores and higher passive range of motion postoperatively (p < 0.

Proximal metatarsal osteotomy is the most effective technique for correcting hallux valgus deformities, especially in metatarsus primus varus. However, these surgeries are technically demanding and prone to complications, such as nonunion, implant failure, and unexpected extension of the osteotomy to the tarsometatarsal joint. In a preclinical study, we evaluated the biomechanical properties of the fixator and compared it with compression screws for treating hallux valgus with a proximal metatarsal osteotomy.

Background: Lubrication function is impaired and the lubricant content of synovial fluid (SF) changes immediately after plateau tibia fractures. Here, we aimed to analyze the lubricant content of SF at chronic term following plateau tibia fracture.

Methods: Forty-eight surgically treated patients without joint incongruency (<2 mm displacement) were included in the study.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the use of Ankaferd blood stopper (ABS), an organic hemostatic agent of plant origin, in septoplasty operations, and to determine its effect on nasal septal tissues in the rabbit model.

Method: The study was performed on 30 New Zealand adult male rabbits each weighing 2500-3500g (average: 3000g). The rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups, namely, the control group (without septoplasty), the septoplasty+tampon group, the septoplasty+ABS group, and the septoplasty+tampon+ABS group.

A 34-year-old male sustained a crush injury resulting in bone and soft tissue loss along the medial longitudinal arch of his left foot. Specifically, the injury resulted in loss of first metatarsal without injury to the medial cuneiform or proximal phalanx, fracture of the third metatarsal, and a 5-cm × 9-cm soft tissue defect overlying the dorsomedial aspect of the right foot. After debridement and daily wound care, the defect was subsequently reconstructed using a free osteocutaneous fibular graft.

An underestimated "ghost" foreign body as an unusual cause of mandibular osseocutaneous fistula formation: impacted spike of a soccer cleat.

J Craniofac Surg

March 2014

From the *Department of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital; and †Division of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Medipol University Medical Faculty, Istanbul, Turkey.

In this article, the case of a patient with osteocutaneous fistula at the left malar region secondary to impacted spike of a soccer cleat to the mandible is presented. Both the clinical and radiologic diagnoses failed because of an obscure anamnesis of the patient and the unavailability of viewing the spike in orthopantomogram and computed tomography. Surgical extirpation was performed to the 41-year-old man who was injured in a football match 3 months before the presentation and had a swooning history after an accidental booting.
