Article Synopsis
  • Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) poses a significant risk of death in patients with active cancer; this study examines how cancer affects treatment choices and outcomes.
  • Out of 872 examined PE patients, 14.8% had active malignancy, with varying treatment approaches and poorer long-term outcomes for those with cancer.
  • Despite higher mortality rates and challenges, catheter-based treatments show promise for effectively managing PE in cancer patients while maintaining manageable bleeding risks.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates how pre-existing renal impairment affects outcomes for patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU), utilizing data from an international registry.
  • - Out of 1393 patients analyzed, those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) had worse disease-free survival (DFS) compared to patients with normal renal function; CKD was linked to a higher likelihood of poor outcomes.
  • - The study concludes that while pre-existing kidney issues don't impact overall survival (OS), they do correlate with worse DFS, highlighting the importance of renal health in treatment planning for UTUC patients.

This study aimed to compare the novel Estaş Medical Anodization (EMA) surface treatment technique with the techniques commonly used in the literature and to examine their effects on osteointegration in the rabbit tibia. A total of 24 rabbits used in this study were divided into 3 groups, with 8 rabbits in each group. Using both tibias of all rabbits in the study, screws belonging to the control group were placed in the left tibia, and the right tibia belonging to the experimental group were placed.

Background: Since its initial description the prostate biopsy technique for detection of prostate cancer (PCA) has constantly evolved. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has been proven to have a sensitivity exceeding 90% to detect the index lesion. This narrative review discusses the evidence around several biopsy strategies, especially in the context of patients that might be eligible for focal therapy.

(1) Introduction: Diagnostic ureteroscopy (URS) is an important component in the workup of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Whether URS was associated with increased recurrence in the bladder was not fully concluded. The current study aimed to evaluate the implication of URS on the incidences of intravesical recurrence following radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) in non-metastatic UTUC patients without prior history of bladder cancer via multi-institutional data.

Kidney-sparing surgery (KSS) for upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC) has gained increasing interest recently. However, there is limited contemporary data regarding the role of KSS in ureteral urothelial carcinoma. Therefore, we investigated the survival outcomes of ureteral urothelial carcinoma after KSS from a large, prospective international UTUC registry.

Objective: The aim of this study is to present the expressions of Calreticulin (CALR) and Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in high-grade gliomas and to further show the relation between the levels of these molecules and Ki-67 index, presence of Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-1 mutation, and tumor grade.

Patients And Methods: A total of 43 patients who underwent surgical resection due to high-grade gliomas (HGG) (grades III and IV) were included. The control group comprised 27 people who showed no gross pathology in the brain during the autopsy procedures.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic ureteroscopy (dURS) is a valuable optional procedure for assessing patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), particularly for obtaining tissue samples for histology.
  • Data from the CROES-UTUC registry, analyzing 2380 patients, showed that dURS with biopsy was performed in 31.6% of cases, yielding adequate samples for diagnosis in 83.5% of situations, although about one-third of patients were under-staged.
  • High-grade biopsies effectively predicted high-grade and high-risk diseases with high accuracy, but low-grade tumors showed a significant number of patients with undetected high-risk disease, indicating a need for better diagnostic methods.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates whether varicocele repair (VR) can lower sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) and seminal oxidative stress (measured by malondialdehyde or MDA) in infertile men.
  • An analysis of 29 studies involving 1,491 men shows a significant reduction in SDF post-VR, regardless of the surgical technique used and the method of SDF testing.
  • The findings also indicate a notable decrease in seminal MDA levels following VR, supporting the effectiveness of varicocele repair in improving reproductive parameters in affected men.

Introduction: The drug classes of α-adrenoceptor antagonists, 5α-reductase inhibitors, and phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors are guideline-recommended treatments of lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia; muscarinic receptor antagonists and β-adrenoceptor agonists are also recommended if storage symptoms are insufficiently addressed with one of the other three drug classes.

Areas Covered: We provide a narrative review (no formalized literature searches performed) of the tolerability of these drug classes with emphasis on the more recently introduced medications, on combination treatment, and on more lately emerging risks.

Expert Opinion/commentary: The tolerability profiles are distinct between drug classes but, with few exceptions, similar within a drug class.
