Despite the availability of international recommendations for the management of Infantile Epileptic Spasms Syndrome (IESS), there is a lack of recommendations adapted to the local context of clinical practice of pediatric neurology in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. By an initiative from the Saudi Pediatric Neurology Society (SPNS), a literature review was performed and an expert panel comprised of 13 pediatric neurologists from all GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates) was subsequently convened to discuss all issues related to the management and diagnosis practices of IESS in the GCC. The overall aim of this consensus document was to develop practical recommendations to support the care of patients with IESS in the GCC and to reflect on how clinical management approaches compare with those adopted internationally.

Oral vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), warfarin, have been in routine clinical use for almost 70 years for various cardiovascular conditions. Direct-Acting Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) have emerged as competitive alternatives for VKAs to prevent stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) and have become the preferred choice in several clinical indications for anticoagulation. Recent guidelines have limited the use of DOACs to patients with non-valvular AF to reduce the risk of cardioembolic complications and to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE).

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is considered an independent risk factor of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. This review highlights atherosclerotic risk, lipid metabolism alterations, and four studies on the use of statins in ESRD-two of which showed a statistically significant effect of statins on the primary endpoints and two of which did not. Since effects were seen with higher doses of statins, further research is needed on the protective effects of intermediate to higher doses of statins in ESRD patients.

Background: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is known to lead not only to severe acute respiratory syndrome, but also can result in thromboembolic events in both the venous and the arterial circulation by inducing coagulation disorders. The potential causes of coagulopathy are inflammation, platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction, and stasis. The thrombotic events including pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis as well as intracatheter thrombosis are more likely to develop in patients infected with severe form of SARS-CoV-2 who are admitted to ICU.

Role of omega-3-Fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), in reducing cardiovascular events is not clear. We conducted a meta-analysis including trial sequential analysis (TSA) of all available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of EPA + statin on cardiovascular risk reduction. The aim is to appraise cardiovascular risk reduction with EPA and statin taken together.

Background: Studies comparing characteristics and in-hospital outcomes for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) for hospitalisations undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) remain limited.
Aim: This sought to investigate characteristics and in-hospital outcomes for HFpEF and HFpEF hospitalisations undergoing STEMI-PCI.
Methods: The National inpatient sample database from years 2012 to 2014 was queried and appropriate International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes were utilised to identify study cohorts.

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a systolic dysfunction with an ejection fraction below 40% and the prevalence of it is substantially increasing in the United States. Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices have increasingly been used for the management of HFrEF and are associated with improved outcomes. The National Inpatient Sample database was used to identify hospitalisations with mechanical circulatory support for HFrEF from 2005 to 2014.
