'Rules of engagement': Does competition drive engagement in faculty development.

Introduction: Faculty development (FD) is integral to the implementation of educational programmes. However, attracting new faculty is challenging. Competition is a motivator for learning at an undergraduate level; however, incorporating competition to engage faculty in continued FD has not been explored.

Genome characterization of influenza A and B viruses in New South Wales, Australia, in 2019: A retrospective study using high-throughput whole genome sequencing.

Background: During the 2019 severe influenza season, New South Wales (NSW) experienced the highest number of cases in Australia. This study retrospectively investigated the genetic characteristics of influenza viruses circulating in NSW in 2019 and identified genetic markers related to antiviral resistance and potential virulence.

Methods: The complete genomes of influenza A and B viruses were amplified using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced with an Illumina MiSeq platform.

Transcriptomic profiling reveals key early response genes during GDF6-mediated differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells to nucleus pulposus cells.

Background: Stem cell-based therapies show promise as a means of repairing the degenerate intervertebral disc, with growth factors often used alongside cells to help direct differentiation toward a nucleus pulposus (NP)-like phenotype. We previously demonstrated adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) differentiation with GDF6 as optimal for generating NP-like cells through evaluating end-stage differentiation parameters. Here we conducted a time-resolved transcriptomic characterization of ASCs response to GDF6 stimulation to understand the early drivers of differentiation to NP-like cells.

A cross-sectional survey on the effectiveness of public health campaigns for changing knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Kenyan informal settlements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We performed two cross-sectional surveys across three informal settlements in Kenya (within Kisii county, Nairobi, and Nakuru county) to study the effectiveness of public health interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 720 participants were surveyed from 120 randomly selected geographical locations (240 participants/settlement/survey), and a coordinated health promotion campaign was delivered between the two surveys by trained staff. Information relating to knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) were collected by trained field workers using a validated questionnaire.

Key Clinical Message: Inherited retinal dystrophies typically affect vision in early childhood; however, this case highlights a late onset retinal dystrophy presenting in midlife and the need for extended visual electrophysiology testing to determine the etiology.

Abstract: A 53-year-old female was referred for visual electrophysiology following a routine optometric eye examination in which yellow flecks were noted in both fundi and the patient had reported a recent near accident whilst driving at night. There was no reported family history of eye disease.

Background: Both obesity and sleep disorders are common among women during pregnancy. Although prior research has identified a relationship between obesity and sleep disorders, those findings are from women later in pregnancy.

Background: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), experienced in 10% to 20% of the population, has been associated with cardiovascular disease and death. However, the condition is heterogeneous and is prevalent in individuals having short and long sleep duration. We sought to clarify the relationship between sleep duration subtypes of EDS with cardiovascular outcomes, accounting for these subtypes.

Background: The health benefits of fruits are well established, but fruit juice has been more controversial. Fruit and juice are often ingested with other foods, which prompted our investigation to determine whether fruit consumed as juice may negate the beneficial effects of consuming whole fruit in people with cardiovascular disease.

Prediction of drug permeation through microneedled skin by machine learning.

Stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the skin preventing external substances from entering human body. Microneedles (MNs) are sharp protrusions of a few hundred microns in length, which can penetrate the stratum corneum to facilitate drug permeation through skin. To determine the amount of drug delivered through skin, in vitro drug permeation testing is commonly used, but the testing is costly and time-consuming.

Adaptation and implementation of an employee mental health disclosure decision aid tool in a real-world sample.

Making decisions about disclosing mental health conditions in the workplace is complicated. A previous randomized controlled trial showed that web-based decision aid tool (READY?) helped employees make decisions and improved mental health. We aimed to evaluate the implementation of this tool and its outcomes when scaled up by a governmental health and safety agency.

Mass cytometry analysis reveals altered immune profiles in patients with coronary artery disease.

Objective: The importance of inflammation in atherosclerosis is well accepted, but the role of the adaptive immune system is not yet fully understood. To further explore this, we assessed the circulating immune cell profile of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) to identify discriminatory features by mass cytometry.

Methods: Mass cytometry was performed on patient samples from the BioHEART-CT study, gated to detect 82 distinct cell subsets.

Region-specific changes in brain activity and memory after continuous positive airway pressure therapy in obstructive sleep apnea: a pilot high-density electroencephalography study.

Study Objectives: Limited channel electroencephalography (EEG) investigations in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have revealed deficits in slow wave activity (SWA) and spindles during sleep and increased EEG slowing during resting wakefulness. High-density EEG (Hd-EEG) has also detected local parietal deficits in SWA (delta power) during NREM. It is unclear whether effective continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment reverses regional SWA deficits, and other regional sleep and wake EEG abnormalities, and whether any recovery relates to improved overnight memory consolidation.

Background: The association between cancer and stroke or bleeding outcomes in atrial fibrillation is unclear. We sought to examine how certain types of cancer influence the balance between stroke and bleeding risk in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF).

Methods And Results: We estimated stroke and bleeding risk among adult patients with NVAF and certain types of cancer (breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, and hematological cancer) from 2009 to 2019 based on data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD and Aurum databases.

Estimating the cost-effectiveness of intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring in adults with type 1 diabetes in England.

Objective: We previously showed that intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM) reduces HbA1c at 24 weeks compared with self-monitoring of blood glucose with finger pricking (SMBG) in adults with type 1 diabetes and high HbA1c levels (58-97 mmol/mol [7.5%-11%]). We aim to assess the economic impact of isCGM compared with SMBG.

Streamlining quantitative joint-wide medial femoro-tibial histopathological scoring of mouse post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis models.

Objectives: Histological scoring remains the gold-standard for quantifying post-traumatic osteoarthritis (ptOA) in animal models, allowing concurrent evaluation of numerous joint tissues. Available systems require scoring multiple sections/joint making analysis laborious and expensive. We investigated if a single section allowed equivalent quantitation of pathology in different joint tissues and disease stages, in three ptOA models.

Lacrimal gland stone(s) (LGSs) are rare and usually asymptomatic. LGSs should be distinguished from dacryoliths, as the former arise in the lacrimal gland. The aetiology of LGSs in many cases is likely related to a reaction to a hair within the palpebral lobe of lacrimal gland.

Room to Improve: An Audit of In-Hospital End-of-Life Care for Oncology Patients in a Tertiary Cancer Centre in Ireland During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic compounded isolation for patients through social distancing measures and staff shortages. We were concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of care provided at end-of-life in 2021 in a national cancer centre, and instigated the first ever review of the care of the dying. Quality of care was assessed retrospectively using a validated instrument developed by the United Kingdom's National Quality Board.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a form of human-wildlife conflict: Why and how nondomesticated species should be incorporated into AMR guidance.

The challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to receive significant global attention as common infections become increasingly resistant to the drugs used to treat them. Once an infectious microbe has developed a mechanism of resistance, it can cause longer, more damaging infections which are more costly, time-consuming, and sometimes impossible to treat. Such impacts occur across the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment.

Upper airway morphology in adults with positional obstructive sleep apnea.

Purpose: To compare the anatomical balance and shape of the upper airway in the supine position between adults with positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) and adults with non-positional OSA (NPOSA).

Methods: Adults diagnosed with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) > 10 events/h) were assessed for eligibility. POSA was defined as the supine AHI more than twice the AHI in non-supine positions; otherwise, patients were classified as NPOSA.
