Does attention deficit hyperactivity disorder worsen family functioning and parenting styles? A case control study.

Objective: A bidirectional relationship between family functioning and parenting styles and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is proposed. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of ADHD symptoms on parenting styles and the general functionality of the family as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Methods: 73 children with ADHD (56%) and 56 controls (43%) (a total of 129 participants, 31% female, 69% male) with a mean age of 11.

Evaluation of factors affecting prognosis in penetrating thoracic injuries.

Background: This study aims to investigate the prognostic factors affecting survival and clinical outcomes in patients exposed to pediatric penetrating thoracic injury.

Methods: A t otal o f 2 67 p ediatric p enetrating t horacic injury patients (217 males, 50 females; mean age 10.8 years; range, 3 to 17 years) who were treated at our hospital during the recent 20 years were analyzed retrospectively.

Radiofrequency ablation of fast ventricular tachycardia causing an ICD storm in an infant with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) storm involves very frequent arrhythmia episodes and ICD shocks, and it is associated with poor short-term and long-term prognosis. Radiofrequency catheter ablation can be used as an effective rescue treatment for patients with an ICD storm. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an infant with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy presenting with an ICD storm and undergoing successful radiofrequency catheter ablation salvage treatment for the fast left posterior fascicular ventricular tachycardia.

The impact of metabolic syndrome on carotid intima media thickness.

Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities involving several cardiovascular risk factors. Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) is an important early screening tool to assess subclinical manifestation of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. We aimed to investigate the impact of MetS on CIMT in a large scaled community based study.

Solitary plexiform neurofibroma of the buccal region unassociated with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibroma is a benign neural tumor. Plexiform type of this tumor is rarely seen in oral cavity in solitary form. In this article, we present an 18-year-old male case with an isolated plexiform neurofibroma localized at buccal region without any other manifestation or family history of neurofibromatosis type 1.

[External auditory canal osteoma resulting in cholesteatoma which is complicated with meningitis].

Osteoma of external auditory canal is a unilateral benign tumor which usually presents with no symptoms. They only cause symptoms when cerumen collection or conduction type hearing loss occurs. They are the most common osseous lesions of the temporal bone.

[Acinetobacter baumannii: a rare cause of deep neck infection].

Deep neck infections, which are originated from upper respiratory tract, are bacterial infections involving deep structures of the neck. Unless diagnosed and managed appropriately, these infections may progress rapidly, leading to severe morbidity and mortality. Although, Acinetobacter baumannii plays a significant role in several nosocomial infections, ear nose throat physicians are usually unfamiliar with this bacteria and it is rarely isolated in deep neck infections.

Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the developed and developing world. It is an independent risk factor for heart failure. Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction has been demonstrated to be a strong predictor of heart failure.

Double thyroglossal duct cyst located in the hyoid region and the tongue base: an unusual coexistence.

Thyroglossal duct cysts originate from persistent epithelial remnants of the thyroglossal duct that are present during the descent of the thyroid gland from the foramen cecum to its final position in the anterior neck. Thyroglossal duct may persist anywhere along the descent from the tongue to the thyroid. Lingually localized thyroglossal duct cysts are congenital lesions of the pharynx, which are very uncommon and may cause morbidity and mortality if not treated expeditiously.

Ganglioglioma in the nasal cavity: a case report.

Ganglioglioma is a tumor containing both astrocytic and neuronal components. It may occur any where in the central nervous system and spinal cord but is only encountered rarely. Nasal glial heterotopia (also known as ''nasal glioma''), is a rare developmental abnormality seen in a wide age group.

Preventing cisplatin induced ototoxicity by N-acetylcysteine and salicylate.

Objectives: In this study we investigated if CP induced ototoxicity could be prevented or reduced by the use of salicylate and N-acetylcysteine.

Patients And Methods: Fifty-four patients (28 females, 26 males; mean age 37+/-9.5 years; range 29 to 71 years) who had cisplatin chemotherapy due to solid organ tumors were enrolled in the study.

[A rare cause of dysphagia: Forestier's disease].

Forestier's disease is a rare rheumatologic disease characterized by ossification in various spinal and extraspinal ligaments especially the anterior longitudinal ligament. The hypertrophic bone proliferations seen in cervical involvement may be so extensive causing dysphagia. We present Forestier's disease as a rare cause of dysphagia with clinical and radiological findings.

[High levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and impaired autonomic activity in smokers].

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) activity and autonomic nervous activity using heart rate variability in smokers.

Study Design: The study consisted of 136 healthy subjects, including 66 smokers (35 women, 31 men; mean age 36 years) and 70 nonsmokers (43 women, 27 men; mean age 34 years). Serum samples were collected from all the subjects.

Background: In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of sharp injuries (SI) and blood and body fluid (BBF) splashes in health care workers during elective surgery procedures (ESP). This study would help to plan the preventive measures for injuries and BBF splashes.

Methods: All ESP were recorded during three months period and SI and BBF splashes were analyzed in Hospital of Dicle University.

A case of solitary angiokeratoma circumscriptum of the tongue.

Angiokeratoma circumscriptum is an uncommon vascular entity. The lesion is present at birth and usually involves the lower extremities. A 9-year-old girl presented with multiple pink-colored, small-raised lesions in the dorsal part of her tongue, which had been present since birth.

Tuberculous parotitis: a review of seven cases.

Objectives: Tuberculous parotitis is rare even in countries where tuberculosis is widespread. We evaluated seven patients with tuberculous parotitis together with clinical and histopathologic findings, and management.

Patients And Methods: In a period of 13 years, seven patients (5 males, 2 females; mean age 32 years; range 23 to 47 years) were diagnosed and treated for tuberculous parotitis.

Auricular mucormycosis: a case report.

Mucormycosis is a rare, saprophytic, invasive, and fulminant fungal disease. It occurs in immunocompromised patients such as those with diabetes mellitus or blood dyscrasia, or in patients under immunosuppressive therapy. A 17-year-old female patient with diabetic ketoacidosis presented with a black-colored lesion in the auricle and external ear canal.

Isolated thoracic duct injury in penetrating neck trauma: a case report.

A 39-year-old man was admitted with a stab wound to left lower neck. Chest X-ray revealed a left hydropneumothorax. Thoracentesis was performed and analysis of the fluid revealed chyle.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of cytokines, biochemical parameters and demographic features on clinical outcomes of acute renal failure (ARF).

Patients And Methods: 59 patients with acute renal failure (28 men, 31 women) were enrolled to the study. Cytokines, biochemical parameters, and complete blood count were measured.

[A general review on the procedures in a human temporal bone laboratory].

Structures of the human ear are usually inaccessible during life for examination of pathologic changes of the underlying disease, which is only possible with postmortem studies of the human temporal bone. Human temporal bone laboratories serve as a unique source of material for research in this respect. They enable comparison between histologic findings of temporal bone sections and the ear pathologies documented prior to death, as well as comparison of diseased ears with any selected temporal bone specimens, both of which provide invaluable knowledge to be shared among researchers and other laboratories.
