Methods and Results We used the National Inpatient Sample database to identify adults aged 18 to 45 years who underwent CABG between 2004 and 2018. The data were weighted to generate national estimates of the entire US hospitalized population.

Racial Disparities in Modifiable Risk Factors and Statin Usage in Black Patients With Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

Background Black men and women are at higher risk for, and suffer greater morbidity and mortality from, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) compared with adults of European Ancestry (EA). Black patients with familial hypercholesterolemia are at particularly high risk for ASCVD complications because of lifelong exposure to elevated levels of low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol. Methods and Results This retrospective study analyzed ASCVD prevalence and risk factors in 808 adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia from 5 US-based lipid clinics, and compared findings in Black versus EA patients.

Right Heart Catheterization in Cardiogenic Shock Is Associated With Improved Outcomes: Insights From the Nationwide Readmissions Database.

Background The usefulness of right heart catherization (RHC) has long been debated, and thus, we aimed to study the real-world impact of the use of RHC in cardiogenic shock. Objective: Advanced machine learning technology provides an opportunity to improve clinical electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation, allowing non-cardiology clinicians to initiate care for atrial fibrillation (AF). The Lucia Atrial Fibrillation Application (Lucia App) photographs the ECG to determine rhythm detection, calculates CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores, and then provides guideline-recommended anticoagulation. Our purpose was to determine the rate of accurate AF identification and appropriate anticoagulation recommendations in emergency department (ED) patients ultimately diagnosed with AF.

What Do US Physicians and Patients Think About Lipid-Lowering Therapy and Goals of Treatment? Results From the GOULD Registry.

Background Because of an increasing number and complexity of treatment options for lipid-lowering therapy in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, guidelines recommend greater active involvement of patients in shared decision-making. However, patients' understanding and perceptions of the benefits, risks, and treatment objectives of lipid-lowering therapy are unknown. Methods and Results Structured questionnaires were conducted in 5006 US outpatients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and suboptimal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) control (LDL-C ≥70 mg/dL) or on a PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) inhibitor and in 113 physician providers as a part of the GOULD (Getting to an Improved Understanding of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Dyslipidemia Management) Registry.

The opioid crisis has greatly affected not only adults but also children as well. As clinicians develop effective approaches to minimize pain and distress in children, the risks and benefits of opioids must be carefully considered. Children of parents with opioid use disorder are also at risk of living in unstable environments, performing poorly academically, engaging in future drug use, and having increased stress, which affects their development before entering adulthood.

BACKGROUND The United States (US)-Mexico border is a socioeconomically underserved area. We sought to investigate whether stroke-related mortality varies between the US border and nonborder counties. METHODS AND RESULTS We used death certificates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database to examine stroke-related mortality in border versus nonborder counties in California, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
