From the Multimodal Neuroimaging Group, Department of Nuclear Medicine (G.N.B., E.J., K.G., A.D.), Department of Psychiatry (F.J.), Department of Neurology (O.A.O., E.K., P.H.W.), Medical Faculty and University Hospital of Cologne, University of Cologne; Molecular Organization of the Brain (G.N.B., A.D.), Institute for Neuroscience and Medicine II, Research Center Juelich; German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (F.J.), Bonn/Cologne, Germany; Institute for Translational Research (S.O.B.), and Department of Family Medicine (S.O.B.), Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth; and Cognitive Neuroscience (P.H.W.), Institute for Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-3), Research Center Juelich, Germany.

Background And Objectives: Apraxia is a frequently observed symptom in Alzheimer disease (AD), but the causal pathomechanism underlying this dysfunction is not well understood. Previous studies have demonstrated associations between various cognitive dysfunctions in AD and cortical tau deposition in specific brain areas, suggesting a causal relationship. Thus, we hypothesized that specific regional patterns of tau pathology in praxis-related brain regions may be associated with apraxic deficits in AD.

Eur J Haematol

November 2024

Department I of Internal Medicine, Medical Faculty and University Hospital of Cologne, University of Cologne, Köln, Germany.

A growing list of therapies available for patients with multiple myeloma (MM) results in deep response rates, but eventually almost all patients relapse. Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is a familiar approach for MM, but responses are often short and side effects burdensome. Simultaneously, allo-SCT provides a unique platform on which novel immune therapies can be employed to improve clinical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal infections pose significant health risks, especially for individuals with HIV in tropical regions, but data on their prevalence is limited, particularly in Ghana.
  • The study investigates the presence of specific fungi in the gastrointestinal tracts of Ghanaian patients using real-time PCR assays to analyze stool samples from both HIV-positive individuals and controls.
  • Results showed that the targeted fungi were unlikely to be part of the gut microbiota in these populations, suggesting that their detection should not be seen as normal flora and has implications for public health screening strategies.

Here, we report the simultaneous isolation of from blood cultures and from a skin ulcer in an elderly woman who suffered from atopic dermatitis and psoriasis and developed acute cellulitis of both arms requiring hospital treatment. To the best of our knowledge, has not been previously reported to cause invasive infections in humans. This case highlights how chronic diseases and older age increase the susceptibility to bacterial infections with environmental bacteria of low virulence.

Cancer vaccines strive to induce robust, antigen-targeted, T-cell-mediated immune responses but have struggled to produce meaningful regression in solid tumors. An autologous cell vaccine, SQZ-PBMC-HPV, was developed by SQZ Biotechnologies using microfluidic squeezing technology to load PBMCs with HPV16 E6 and E7 antigens in HLA-A*02+ patients. The SQZ-PBMC-HPV-101 Phase 1 trial (NCT04084951) enrolled patients with incurable HPV16+ cancers.

May 2024

Institute and Policlinic for Occupational Medicie, Environmental Medicine, and Prevention Research, Medical Faculty and University Hospital of Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

Season-of-birth associations with psychiatric disorders point to environmental (co-)aetiological factors such as natural photoperiod that, if clarified, may allow interventions toward prevention. We systematically reviewed the literature concerning season-of-birth and bipolar disorder and depression and explored associations between the perinatal natural photoperiod and these outcomes in a cross-sectional analysis of the UK Biobank database. We used mean daily photoperiod and relative photoperiod range (relative to the mean) in the 3rd trimester and, separately, in the first 3 months post birth as metrics.

Article Synopsis
  • Digested fats are absorbed by intestinal cells (enterocytes) and converted into pre-chylomicrons before being sent to the bloodstream, but the role of mitochondria in this process is not well understood.
  • *Research shows that when mitochondrial functions are impaired in enterocytes, it disrupts the production of chylomicrons and the transport of fats to other body parts, leading to fat accumulation in the small intestine.
  • *Specifically, a lack of mitochondrial protein DARS2 results in large lipid droplets in enterocytes and problems with the Golgi apparatus, highlighting the critical role of mitochondria in processing dietary fats in the intestines, which could have implications for diseases affecting energy metabolism.
