Objective: This study is designed to evaluate the frequency of periodontal disease in a group of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and how this relates with diabetes metabolic control, duration of diabetes, and presence of diabetic complications.
Methods: A comparison was made of periodontal parameters (plaque index, bleeding index, pocket depth and attachment loss) in a group of diabetic patients (n=90) versus a group of non-diabetics (n=90). Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate relationship between periodontal parameters and degree of metabolic control, the duration of the disease, and the appearance of complications.

The aim of this paper was to review the procedures adopted when a perforation of the sinus membrane takes place during a direct sinus lift for filling with bone graft; and the survival of implants in those cases in which perforation of the sinus membrane occurred. A bibliographical search in PUBMED was carried out of articles published from 1997 to 2008, with the key words "sinus perforation" and "membrane perforation". All articles specifying the two following criteria were included: (a) procedure in the case of perforation of the sinus membrane during direct sinus lift; and (b) the number and survival rate of implants placed in direct sinus lift with perforated and non perforated membrane.

Software in combination with imaging techniques is used increasingly for diagnosis, planning and treatment in oral implantology. Computer-aided surgery allows a great accuracy in implant positioning to be obtained, taking advantage of the amount of bone available and facilitating minimally invasive surgery. It is a significant aid in determining implant number, location, angle and characteristics.

Background: Because periodontitis presents many similarities with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with regard to tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced bone resorption, the benefits of TNF-alpha blockade in RA prompted us to determine its efficacy in treating coexisting periodontitis.
Methods: Periodontal status was evaluated in 40 subjects with RA who were divided into two groups: Group I contained 20 subjects who had received infliximab every 6 weeks for > or =22 months at the time of periodontal evaluation. The 20 subjects in group II were evaluated before their first infusion with infliximab.

Osteoporosis is caused by a failure of bone homeostasis, but the precise molecular mechanisms controlling bone homeostasis are largely unknown. Increasing evidence that neurons and neurotransmitters are intimately involved in bone remodelling has shed light on a novel regulatory mechanism for bone homeostasis. Namely, like all other homeostatic functions, bone remodelling is under the control of the hypothalamus, and osteoporosis is considered to be a neuroskeletal disease.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare wide-diameter implants placed in mature bone versus implants inserted in postextraction bone.
Material And Methods: A retrospective case study was made; the sample was composed of subjects who had had wide implants placed in the molar area between 2003 and 2005. Two groups were formed: implants placed in mature bone and implants in postextraction bone.
Purpose: To relate the histologic diagnosis and radiographic size with the prognosis of 70 biopsies obtained via periapical surgery.
Materials And Methods: Seventy biopsies obtained during periapical surgery were histologically analyzed following curettage of the tissue, establishing the diagnosis as either apical granuloma, radicular cyst, or scar tissue. The radiographic size of the lesion (area in mm(2)) before surgery and after 1 year of follow-up was measured.
Purpose: This study was conducted to relate the histological diagnosis of chronic inflammatory periapical lesions with the radiographic images of these lesions.
Materials And Methods: A total of 70 biopsy specimens obtained during periapical surgery were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under a microscope. Histological analysis established the diagnosis as granuloma, cyst, or scar tissue.

This article carries out a literature update on immediately restored dental implants in partially edentulous patients. A search was made in Medline of all articles published between the year 2000 and February 2007, including all articles published in both English and Spanish, in which immediate restoration of implants was made of partially edentulous areas with a minimum of 12 implants and six months follow-up. Certain decisive factors exist for the success of this technique in partially edentulous patients, such as primary stability, a roughened implant surface, and the absence of parafunctional habits in patients acceptable for this type of treatment.

Purpose: Mental neuropathy (MN) is characterized by the presence of a sensory defect in the form of paresthesias or dysesthesias in the territory innervated by the mental nerve. MN may be the first manifestation of systemic cancer, a symptom of spread of an established tumor, or a sign of infiltration in an intraoral lesion. In any of these cases, the symptom is indicative of a very poor patient prognosis.

Dental implant placement is a controlled, programmed surgical procedure, not without its complications. The aim of the present paper is to study the intraoperative complications in implant surgery, carrying out a review of articles appearing in Medline over the last 10 years. Among the intra operative complications related with surgery, hemorrhagic accidents occur most frequently in the interforaminal region, since the majority of the vascular branches enter the mandibular bone in this region.

Both periosteum and bone marrow have the potential to induce heterotopic bone when grafted. Whether the process of bone formation is controlled by the recipient environment where the donor graft is placed or by factors from the donor site is not well documented. The purpose of this study was to examine the histology of new bone induced by either autogenously grafted periosteum or autogenously grafted bone marrow using the rat calvarial defect model in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Apical periodontitis is produced in the majority of cases by intraradicular infection. Treatment consists in the elimination of the infectious agents by endodontia. Even when carrying out a correct cleansing and filling of canals, it is possible that periapical periodontitis will persist in the form of an asymptomatic radiolucency, giving rise to the post-endodontic periapical lesion.

We investigated the osteogenic potential of a combination graft of beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and periosteum in the rat calvarial defect model. The combination beta-TCP and periosteum graft was grafted into rat calvarial defects; the newly formed bone in the defect was studied histologically and radiographically and compared with periosteum grafts and TCP grafts. Ten days after combination grafting, the grafted periosteum showed cell proliferation and Runx2 immunoreaction; 20 days after grafting, new bone formation was seen around the beta-TCP; and 30 days after grafting, new bone developed and actively replaced beta-TCP, while radiography showed calcified areas.
