Background: Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is widely used for the development of delivery systems for drugs and therapeutic biomolecules in tissue engineering applications. Particles of biphasic calcium phosphate can be covered by PLGA to change their manipulating characteristics.

Purpose: Aim of this study was to investigate the radiological and histomorphometric results of the use of PLGA-coated biphasic calcium phosphate granules in sinus floor elevation and to analyze the underlying molecular processes by immunohistochemical staining.

Frequency of achieving a 'fit' cardiorespiratory fitness level and hypertension: a cohort study.

Objectives: Although maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness is encouraged to reduce the risk of hypertension, the level at, and length of time for which, individuals need to maintain fitness remains unclear. We examined the association between the frequency of achieving the recommended fitness levels of the 'Physical Activity Reference for Health Promotion 2013' and the risk of hypertension among Japanese men.

Methods: This cohort study was conducted in 6653 men without hypertension enrolled in 1986.

Hemodynamic variations and anxiety during the surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars.

Background: The surgical removal of an impacted third molar can cause patient anxiety. Such anxiety and the use of vasoconstrictor drugs and local anesthetics in turn can induce hemodynamic variations during the operation. A study is made of the variations in hemodynamic parameters (systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate) and their correlation to patient gender and anxiety during surgical removal of an impacted lower third molar.

Comparison of digital protocols for the measurement of peri-implant marginal bone loss.

Background: The measurement of peri-implant marginal bone loss is currently carried out using digital methods of radiographic analysis assisted by various types of software. The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of three different softwares: specific radiology software for the development and visualization of radiological images in DICOM format (3Dicom Viewer®), advanced level software for professional editing of bitmap images (or raster graphics) (Adobe Photoshop®), and mid-level software for processing bitmap-type images, programmed in Java and in the public domain (ImageJ®).

Material And Methods: It was verified that the three softwares used are valid for the measurement of peri-implant marginal bone loss provided that the appropriate protocol is fulfilled.

Background: The relationship between the combination of physical activity (PA) and body mass index (BMI) with low back pain (LBP) is unclear. The present study offers a cross-sectional assessment of how combinations of PA and BMI are related to LBP in Japanese men.

Methods: Participants were 4022 Japanese men (mean age = 47) who underwent regular clinical examinations.

Material And Methods: A preliminary study was carried out with 8 patients subjected to dental implant treatment with an immediate loading protocol involving a novel system of abutments with flexible screws. Implant survival was analyzed, together with marginal bone loss and patient and dentist satisfaction.

The Association of Fit-Fat Index with Incident Diabetes in Japanese Men: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Type 2 diabetes is increasing globally and in Asia. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of a fit-fat index (FFI) with diabetes incidence among Japanese men. In total 5,014 men aged 18-64 years old, who had an annual health check up with no history of major chronic disease at baseline from 2002 to 2009 were observed.

In recent years, our knowledge of the varied role that ubiquitination plays in promoting signal amplification, novel protein interactions, and protein turnover has progressed rapidly. This is particularly remarkable in the examination of how DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) are repaired, with many components of the ubiquitin (Ub) conjugation, de-conjugation, and recognition machinery now identified as key factors in DSB repair. In addition, a member of the Ub-like family, small Ub-like modifier (SUMO), has also been recognised as integral for efficient repair.

Facial Alveolar Bone Width at the First and Second Maxillary Premolars in Healthy Patients: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the thickness of the facial alveolar bone at the first and second maxillary premolars and determinate the percentage of premolars that reached 2 mm in width. A retrospective study was performed, analyzing cone beam computed tomography scans from the database of the Oral Surgery Unit of the University of Valencia. Patients with periodontal disease, orthodontic treatment, absence among the first maxillary molars, premolars with endodontic treatment, or prosthetic restorations were excluded.

A combined digital and stereophotogrammetric technique for rehabilitation with immediate loading of complete-arch, implant-supported prostheses: A randomized controlled pilot clinical trial.

Statement Of Problem: Traditional impressions for complete-arch restorations are complex and time-consuming, and they can be uncomfortable for the patient. New digital techniques such as stereophotogrammetry may mitigate this.

Purpose: The purpose of this randomized controlled pilot clinical trial was to compare the patient and dentist satisfaction and work times of traditional impressions (control group) and digital impressions with stereophotogrammetry in complete-arch, implant-supported prostheses.

The Biology and Disease-driven Human Proteome Project (B/D-HPP) is aimed at supporting and enhancing the broad use of state-of-the-art proteomic methods to characterize and quantify proteins for in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms of biological processes and human disease. Based on a foundation of the pre-existing HUPO initiatives begun in 2002, the B/D-HPP is designed to provide standardized methods and resources for mass spectrometry and specific protein affinity reagents and facilitate accessibility of these resources to the broader life sciences research and clinical communities. Currently there are 22 B/D-HPP initiatives and 3 closely related HPP resource pillars.

Caries diagnosis using light fluorescence devices in comparison with traditional visual and tactile evaluation: a prospective study in 152 patients.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the in vivo effectiveness of two fluorescence techniques (DIAGNOdent and VistaProof) and of visual and tactile evaluation in the diagnosis of occlusal caries in permanent teeth. A total of 302 teeth (molars and premolars) from 152 patients were studied. The occlusal surfaces were cleaned using pumice mixed with water, followed by application of the diagnostic methods according to the instructions of the manufacturer, and of the visual and tactile methods according to the recommendations.

Whole lung lavage therapy for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis: a global survey of current practices and procedures.

Background: Whole lung lavage (WLL) is the current standard of care treatment for patients affected by pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP). However, WLL is not standardized and international consensus documents are lacking. Our aim was to obtain a factual portrayal of WLL as currently practiced with respect to the procedure, indications for its use, evaluation of therapeutic benefit and complication rate.
