Rapid-release psychostimulants are commonly used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but midday dosing requirements and poor compliance rates have prompted the development of sustained-release formulations. Sustained-release methylphenidate has been shown to have efficacy equal to that of the regular-release formulation and may be preferable when it is difficult or impossible to provide midday doses.
