Epilepsy is a common brain function disorder. The present study aims to evaluate the long-term effect of perampanel (PRM) and lacosamide (LCM), administered singly in a high-dose or in a low-dose combination of both, on comorbid anxiety, cognitive impairment, BDNF, and Cyclin D1 hippocampal expression in an experimental model of temporal lobe epilepsy with lithium-pilocarpine. PRM (3 mg/kg, p.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent research has gathered extensive biological evidence from various fields like biochemistry and neuroimaging to support the idea of a continuum of affective disorders.
  • - This continuum includes two dimensions: a clinical one that ranges from major depressive disorder to the bipolar spectrum, and a causal one focusing on the various underlying factors of these mood disorders.
  • - The upcoming Special Issue aims to investigate the complex markers that characterize these affective disorders from both clinical and causal viewpoints.

Despite enormous developments in medicine, infective endocarditis (IE) remains an ongoing issue for physicians due to increased morbidity and persistently high mortality. Our goal was to assess clinical outcomes in patients with IE and identify determinants of in-hospital mortality. Material and methods: The analysis was retrospective, single-centered, and comprised 270 patients diagnosed with IE from 2005 to 2021 (median age 65 (51-74), male 177 (65.

January 2025

Medical University Plovdiv, Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, Research Insititute and SRIPD-MUP, Translational and Computation Neuroscience Group, Vassil Aprilov 15 a, 4002 Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Introduction: Mood disorders often involve attenuated interoception, which impairs the accurate perception and interpretation of internal bodily signals. Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been used to explore the neurobiology of interoception in vivo while participants are performing interoceptive tasks.

Aim: The aim of this review is to present the progress in neuroimaging studies of interoception in mood disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study identified two subgroups of schizophrenia patients using machine learning: major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP), characterized by severe cognitive deficits, negative symptoms, and various behavioral issues, and simpler neurocognitive psychosis (SNP), which is less severe.
  • - A sample of 40 healthy controls and 90 schizophrenia patients was analyzed using Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) to differentiate these subgroups based on neurocognitive tests and immune biomarkers.
  • - Results showed significant differences between MNP and SNP, with MNP exhibiting distinct features like reduced motor speed, activated T helper-17 response, and impaired cognitive functions, suggesting a need for targeted biomarker research in each subgroup. *

Objective biomarkers have been a critical challenge for the field of psychiatry, where diagnostic, prognostic, and theranostic assessments are still based on subjective narratives. Psychopathology operates with idiographic knowledge and subjective evaluations incorporated into clinical assessment inventories, but is considered to be a medical discipline and, as such, uses medical intervention methods (e.g.

Rationale: The common embryologic neural origin of the ectoderm includes the epidermal layer of the skin and the amelodentinal components of the teeth which can result in numerous diseases damaging both skin and dentition. Three main dental abnormalities were described as a consequence of congenital syphilis: Hutchinson incisors, bud molars, and mulberry molars which usually affect all permanent first molars.

Patient Concerns: As far as we know, this case is the first reported for mulberry second molar in a non-syphilitic patient.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the impact of two medications, sacubitril/valsartan and ramipril, on short-term kidney function changes in patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction (MI), focusing on serum creatinine levels.
  • In a trial with 5,661 patients, it was found that those taking sacubitril/valsartan had a slightly higher likelihood of experiencing initial increases in serum creatinine compared to those taking ramipril.
  • However, acute changes in creatinine levels from either medication did not correlate with worse long-term cardiovascular outcomes or significant changes in kidney function, suggesting the initial increases might not indicate long-term risks.

Introduction: Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a rare but potentially life-threatening urinary tract infection characterized by the formation of gas in the renal parenchyma, collecting system, and perinephric tissue. The condition typically develops in patients with specific predisposing factors such as diabetes mellitus, congenital or acquired obstructive uropathies, or individuals taking immunosuppressive agents. Rarely can the disease occur in patients with other predisposing factors, such as the use of SGLT2 inhibitors, but this is quite uncommon.
