Aims: Left ventricular (LV) subclinical impairment has been described in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). We assessed the relationship between LV myocardial deformation by strain imaging and recurrent hospitalization for heart failure (HF) or cardiovascular death in a large international HFpEF population.
Methods And Results: We assessed two-dimensional speckle-tracking based global longitudinal strain (GLS) in 790 patients (mean age 74 ± 8 years, 54% female) with adequate image quality enrolled in the PARAGON-HF echocardiography study.

Background: Hospitalizations for Black patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have increased in recent decades though our understanding of disease behavior in Black patients remains limited and concerns related to healthcare equity persist. Existing data are largely drawn from small case series at IBD referral centers or national registries lacking granular longitudinal outpatient data. Our aim was to determine whether there are racial or socioeconomic disparities in acute care utilization as measured by hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits within a large national cohort of IBD patients.

Background: The PARAGON-HF (Prospective Comparison of ARNI With ARB Global Outcomes in HF With Preserved Ejection Fraction) trial tested the efficacy of sacubitril-valsartan in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Existing data on cardiac structure and function in patients with HFpEF suggest significant heterogeneity.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize cardiac structure and function, quantify their associations with clinical outcomes, and contextualize these findings with other HFpEF studies.

Background: Surgery for congenital heart disease initiates a complex inflammatory response that can influence the postoperative course. However, broad integration of the cytokine and proteolytic cascades (matrix metalloproteinases: MMPs), which may contribute to postoperative outcomes, has not been performed.
Methods And Results: Using a low-volume (50-60 μL), high-sensitivity, multiplex approach, we serially measured a panel of cytokines (interleukins 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1β, and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor) and matrix metalloproteinases (matrix metalloproteinases 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 12, and 13) in patients (n = 9) preoperatively and after repair of ventricular septal defect.

Objective: The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in the aggressive course of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there are a large number of MMP subtypes with diverse proteolytic substrates and different induction pathways. This study tested the hypothesis that a differential MMP profile would exist between NSCLC and normal lung and that MMP patterns would differ between NSCLC histologic types.

Background: Aldosterone fosters progressive renal injury, but the mechanism is unknown. Both Wistar-Furth rats, which are resistant to aldosterone actions, and adrenalectomized Sprague-Dawley rats, which lack aldosterone, are characterized by resistance to remnant nephropathy and by reduced whole kidney citrate synthase activity. Increase in citrate synthase activity is a well-characterized, specific renal response to aldosterone.

RDEC-1 (serotype O15) is an attaching and effacing strain of rabbit enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (REPEC) that causes diarrhea in postweanling rabbits. It expresses AF/R1 pili that mediate Peyer's patch M-cell adherence. We investigated Peyer's patch adherence, the presence of virulence genes, ileal brush border aggregation, and pilus expression in 9 strains representing several serotypes of REPEC as well as in two commensal strains.
