Show how lunar catecholamine cardiomyopathy alone, exemplified by Neil Armstrong's single space walk, prior to exposure to inhalation of fine particulate matter, can trigger " Neil Armstrong Syndrome" or by Irwin with coronary, possibly hypertensive heart disease, and catecholamine cardiomyopathy. With space flight, invariably magnesium ion deficits, catecholamine elevations, vicious cycles. Design Use lunar heart rates while configuring rover to show severe tachycardia component of the syndrome.

Importance: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), an antioxidant that supports mitochondrial function, has been shown in preclinical Parkinson disease (PD) models to reduce the loss of dopamine neurons, and was safe and well tolerated in early-phase human studies. A previous phase II study suggested possible clinical benefit.
Objective: To examine whether CoQ10 could slow disease progression in early PD.

The International Space Station provides an extraordinary facility to study the accelerated aging process in microgravity, which could be triggered by significant reductions in magnesium (Mg) ion levels with, in turn, elevations of catecholamines and vicious cycles between the two. With space flight there are significant reductions of serum Mg (P < 0.0001) that have been shown in large studies of astronauts and cosmonauts.

Space flight (SF) and dust inhalation in habitats cause hypertension whereas in SF (alone) there is no consistent hypertension but reduced diurnal blood pressure (BP) variation instead. Current pharmaceutical subcutaneous delivery systems are inadequate and there is impairment in the absorption, metabolism, excretion, and deterioration of some pharmaceuticals. Data obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration through the Freedom of Information Act shows that Irwin returned from his 12-day Apollo 15 mission in 1971 and was administered a bicycle stress test.

The presenting symptoms of acute renal vein thrombosis (RVT) can often be confused with those of nephrolithiasis. Delayed diagnosis and treatment of RVT can result in catastrophic complications, including loss of renal function and pulmonary embolism. A high clinical suspicion and early imaging with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging will allow early initiation of therapy and prevention of thrombus extension in patients with RVT.

Scabies continues to be a major public health problem. Recent findings reveal that these mites produce substances that modulate the host's immune response resulting in the latency period prior to symptoms. In terms of treatment, two cases of ivermectin resistance have come to fore in Australia in patients treated over fifty times with the agent.

Background: Concerns have arisen over the development of antibiotic-resistant organisms due to the prolonged use of oral and topical antibiotics in acne vulgaris. We have previously demonstrated that benzoyl peroxide used in consort with a chemical with an accessible tertiary amine, such as an allylamine, increases radical activity and biological effect.
Objectives: The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the efficacy of two nonantibiotic topical remedies for mild to moderate acne, with one of the agents being a combination of benzoyl peroxide with butenifine, an allylamine.

It has been suggested that ligand-dependent gene activation by the progesterone receptor (PR) can result from recruitment of PR by the promoter bound Sp1. A detailed investigation of the Sp1-dependent agonistic activity of RU486 and R5020 on the folate receptor (FR) type alpha, p27, thymidine kinase 1 and p21 genes reveals a different mechanism. The FR-alpha P4 promoter and the endogenous FR-alpha gene were up-regulated by the PR agonist R5020 through either PR-A or PR-B.

Child and adolescent psychiatry has long been recognized as a shortage specialty by various national studies. The workforce has never increased to the extent that meets society's demand, however. The workforce crisis has continued with declining funding for residency, declining clinical revenues, and declining recruitment of trainees.

The prognosis for renal allograft survival in a patient with BK virus-associated nephropathy is distressing because nearly 50% of affected grafts are lost. With these statistics in mind, attempting clinical intervention before BK virus disease develops seems appropriate. Noninvasive screening tools such as tests to detect decoy cells in urine can enable diagnosis of BK viral infection in its early stages.

Background: Elevated platelet 12-Lipoxygenase (P12-LOX) expression is associated with advanced stage and grade prostate cancer and overexpression in PC-3 cells promotes tumor growth and angiogenesis. The mechanisms underlying the role of P12-LOX in angiogenesis remain unclear.
Methods: Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure 12(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12(S)-HETE) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in conditioned media of PC-3 cells stably overexpressing human P12-LOX.

Background: Topical anesthetics are widely used to diminish the sensation of pain from various medical cutaneous procedures. Any topical agent that reduces the desired effect has clinical ramifications.
Materials And Methods: Topical 6% benzocaine cream was applied to both inner forearms of five persons and covered with a bandage.

During tumor progression, multiple genetic changes in the genome vastly alter the transcriptomes of cancers. Some of these changes, including the mutations of various growth regulatory genes as well as alterations in the transcription of a large number of genes, may lead to resistance to treatment. Therefore, capturing such genomic information of the tumors would enable a physician to decide on the course of treatment options clinically available.

Head lice infestation is a common and growing problem, primarily affecting school-aged children. There are growing numbers of treatment failures due to the emergence of treatment-resistant lice to the popular over-the-counter products that have been used for the past several decades. Resistance has also decreased the efficacy of lindane, a prescription pediculicide that has been commonly used for several generations.

In neonatal rodents, elevated levels of cortical serotonin (5-HT) blur the normally segmented vibrissae-related pattern of thalamocortical afferents (TCAs) in the posteromedial barrel subfield (PMBSF) of primary somatosensory cortex. We employed 5-HT immunocytochemistry or anterograde transport of 1'1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3' tetramethyl-indocarbocyanin (Di-I) to label TCA arbors to study the effects of 5-HT manipulations on space occupied by TCAs within the PMBSF and the total area labeled. In rats treated to increase cortical 5-HT from birth to postnatal day (P) 6, the percentage of PMBSF area occupied by terminal labeling was significantly higher from that in controls (79.

A prior randomized trial suggested a possible survival advantage favoring the combination of histamine and subcutaneous interleukin-2 (IL-2), compared to IL-2 alone in patients with metastatic melanoma. It has been postulated previously that antihistamines may, therefore, actually be antagonistic to IL-2 and thus interfere with its antitumor activity. We have previously shown no such antagonistic effect in patients with melanoma receiving IL-2 and antihistamines when reviewing the known literature.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries. The current pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPS) vaccine is highly effective in young adults; however, vaccine efficacy is dramatically decreased in the elderly population. We hypothesized that the decreased vaccine efficacy in the elderly results from altered variable gene family usage.
