  • Lamotrigine is an antiepileptic and mood stabilizer that works by blocking sodium channels, helping to stabilize neuronal membranes and reduce the release of certain neurotransmitters associated with mood disorders.
  • Approved by the FDA for bipolar disorder maintenance treatment since 1994, it is also used off-label for acute bipolar depression, showing effectiveness in preventing depressive episodes, particularly in bipolar disorder type II.
  • While it has promising benefits, lamotrigine can cause serious adverse effects like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, requiring careful monitoring and potential drug discontinuation, especially in patients with hypersensitivity risks.

Study Question: Can oocyte functionality be assessed by observing changes in their intracytoplasmic lipid droplets (LDs) profiles?

Summary Answer: Lipid profile changes can reliably be detected in human oocytes; lipid changes are linked with maternal age and impaired developmental competence in a mouse model.

What Is Known Already: In all cellular components, lipid damage is the earliest manifestation of oxidative stress (OS), which leads to a cascade of negative consequences for organelles and DNA. Lipid damage is marked by the accumulation of LDs.

The dataset presents a 43 year-long reanalysis of pollen seasons for three major allergenic genera of trees in Europe: alder (Alnus), birch (Betula), and olive (Olea). Driven by the meteorological reanalysis ERA5, the atmospheric composition model SILAM predicted the flowering period and calculated the Europe-wide dispersion pattern of pollen for the years 1980-2022. The model applied an extended 4-dimensional variational data assimilation of in-situ observations of aerobiological networks in 34 European countries to reproduce the inter-annual variability and trends of pollen production and distribution.

We investigated the associations between sociodemographic factors, religiosity traits, and the perception of discrimination among Muslim Americans in both everyday life and medical settings. A self-administered web-based questionnaire, comprising validated measures of discrimination and religiosity, was completed by a convenience sample of English-speaking adult Muslim Americans, recruited through both in-person and online channels. Among the 1281 respondents, less than half were born in the USA (46%), and a significant portion displayed visible religious markers, such as wearing a hijab or having a beard (61%).

Proapoptotic and antimigration properties of osthole in combination with LY294002 against human glioma cells.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

October 2024

Department of Functional Anatomy and Cytobiology, Institute of Biological Sciences, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Akademicka 19, 20-033, Lublin, Poland.

Anaplastic astrocytoma and glioblastoma multiforme are infiltrating and vascularized gliomas with a high degree of chemoresistance and metastasis. Our previous studies have shown that osthole may be of great importance in the treatment of gliomas. Therefore, in this work, for the first time, coumarin was used in combination with LY294002-an inhibitor of the PI3K-Akt/PKB-mTOR pathway, which is overly active in gliomas.

  • Pregnancy stress affects both moms and dads, and dads can also experience depression after a baby is born, sometimes up to a year later.
  • Dads have different risk factors for depression, like hormone changes and financial issues, and their symptoms can be hard to spot even for doctors.
  • If we improve how we check for and treat men’s postpartum depression, it could help both dads and their kids by preventing problems in their relationships and the child's mental health.

November 2024

Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Walerego Eljasza - Radzikowskiego 152, 31-342 Kraków, Poland; Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical University of Lublin, Chodźki 1, Lublin 20-093, Poland. Electronic address:

Atherosclerotic carotid stenosis (ACS) is a recognized risk factor for ischemic stroke. Currently, the gold diagnostic standard is Doppler ultrasound, the results of which do not provide certainty whether a given person should be qualified for surgery or not, because in some patients, carotid artery stenosis, for example at the level of 70 %, does not cause ischemic stroke in others yes. Therefore, there is a need for new methods that will clearly indicate the marker qualifying the patient for surgery.

Atherosclerosis carotid stenosis (ACS) is one of the main causes of stroke. Unfortunately, the highest number of people go to the doctor with an advanced disease or as a result of a stroke, because carotid atherosclerosis does not cause obvious symptoms. Therefore, it is important to find a diagnostic method to detect the disease during routine tests (using blood or serum).
