Variations and Opportunities in Postnatal Management of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn.

Importance: Preventive efforts in pregnancy-related alloimmunization have considerably decreased the prevalence of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). International studies are therefore essential to obtain a deeper understanding of the postnatal management and outcomes of HDFN. Taken together with numerous treatment options, large practice variations among centers may exist.

Efficacy of bolus injections of landiolol hydrochloride as premedication in coronary artery CT angiography.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of bolus injections of landiolol hydrochloride as premedication in coronary artery CT angiography (CCTA).

Methods: The study population consisted of 37 patients (17 female; median age, 56 years; IQR, 19 years; range, 19-88 years) who underwent CCTA after intravenous injection of landiolol hydrochloride due to a heart rate > 60 bpm. Landiolol hydrochloride was administered in a stepwise manner until a heart rate of ≤ 60 bpm was achieved or a maximum dose of 60 mg was reached after six injections.

Early depressive symptoms within the first days after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are mainly manifested with performance parameters (lack of energy, concentration difficulties, reduction in physical functioning). Homoarginine (hArg), a non-proteinogenic amino acid, might increase the availability of nitric oxide (NO). NO controls vasodilatation, blood flow, mitochondrial respiration and improves performance.

Appropriate surgical management in skin and soft tissue infections.

Purpose Of Review: To present standards and recent technical innovations in the surgical management of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI).

Recent Findings: SSTI are a frequent cause of presentation in the acute care setting. They can range from simple and uncomplicated to severe and necrotizing infections.

The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Updated and extended construct validation in community samples using a newly constructed German version.

The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS) is a an economical, widely used self-report measure of vulnerable narcissism. Developed and mostly used as a unidimensional scale, previous structural examinations suggest two correlated dimensions, one emphasizing hypersensitive/neurotic aspects and the other highlighting egocentric/antagonistic aspects of vulnerable narcissism. The few extant factor analyses of the HSNS, however, differ profoundly in their methodological approach, the resulting item-to-factor assignment, and lack a thorough validation of the two putative subscales.

Inflammation in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-Related Transient Focal Neurological Episodes.

Transient focal neurological episodes (TFNE), often associated with convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH), are common in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), but their pathophysiology remains incompletely understood. In six patients with unremitting TFNE, using high-resolution post-contrast magnetic resonance imaging and vessel wall imaging (VWI), we found various combinations of transient leptomeningeal, parenchymal and vessel wall enhancement; in 5 of 6 the enhancement included regions corresponding anatomically to symptoms. Three patients had resolution of TFNE and enhancement (2 with corticosteroid treatment, 1 without).

Electrotherapy as treatment for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy - a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Electrotherapy has been investigated in chronic pain and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, however prospective trials in patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) are scarce.

Methods: Fifty-one patients with CIPN ≥ grade 1 subsequent to receiving platinum- and/or taxane-based chemotherapy types were randomized to 8 weeks of high tone external muscle stimulation (HTEMS) or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). The primary outcome were changes in the EORTC-QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire.

Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown Measures on the Incidence of Peritonsillar Abscess: A Retrospective Study.

Background/objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Austria, like many European countries, implemented lockdown measures to curb viral transmission. These public health interventions, including social distancing and improved hygiene, were anticipated to affect various infectious diseases. This study aimed to assess whether the incidence of peritonsillar abscess, a severe upper respiratory inflammatory disease, decreased during the lockdown period of 2020 compared to previous years.

The Ponseti Method vs. Surgical Treatment for Idiopathic Clubfoot: A Prospective Long-Term Follow-Up.

Idiopathic clubfoot is a common skeletal deformity in newborns that can cause functional limitations, pain, and reduced quality of life. The Ponseti method has become the gold standard for clubfoot treatment, replacing previous extensive surgical approaches. However, there is a lack of prospective long-term data comparing surgical and Ponseti treatments.

Creativity and Mental Illness: A Case Study of a Patient with Progressive Bulbar Palsy.

Creativity and the production of artwork can have an impact on the course and treatment of comorbid severe mental illness and neurodegeneration. We report on a 70-year-old male patient with highly original artistic behavior, who suffered from lifelong recurrent major depression and subsequently developed symptoms of progressive bulbar palsy (PBP). In the context of a systematic literature review, we detail the patient's personal and artistic biographies and portray artwork from his artistic portfolio together with his disease history, clinical examination, psychopathological and neuropsychological evaluations, blood and cerebrospinal fluid analyses, neuroimaging, neurophysiological testing, and psychotherapeutic treatment.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) exist in various subclasses, with smaller HDL particles possessing the highest anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Understanding the role of these specific subclasses in chronic kidney disease (CKD) could provide valuable insights into disease progression and potential therapeutic targets. In the present study, we assessed HDL subclass composition in 463 patients with CKD stage 2-4 using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The uptake of Ca by mitochondria is an important and tightly controlled process in various tissues. Even small changes in the key proteins involved in this process can lead to significant cellular dysfunction and, ultimately, cell death. In this study, we used stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy and developed an unbiased approach to monitor the sub-mitochondrial distribution and dynamics of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) and mitochondrial calcium uptake 1 (MICU1) under resting and stimulated conditions.

By combining clinical data and multimodal molecular inputs, caiSC facilitates personalized medicine, promising enhanced diagnostic precision and tailored therapeutic approaches. Despite its potential, caiSC lacks comprehensive data coverage across cell types and diseases, presenting challenges in data quality and model robustness.

Use of inpatient palliative care in metastatic testicular cancer patients undergoing critical care therapy: insights from the national inpatient sample.

To test for rates of inpatient palliative care (IPC) in metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving critical care therapy (CCT). Within the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2008-2019), we tabulated IPC rates in metastatic testicular cancer patients receiving CCT, namely invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (PEG), dialysis for acute kidney failure (AKF), total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or tracheostomy. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models addressing IPC were fitted.

Tract-specific white matter hyperintensities and neuropsychiatric syndromes: a multicentre memory clinic study.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia but the functional significance of WMH in specific white matter (WM) tracts is unclear. We investigate whether WMH burden within major WM fibre classes and individual WM tracts are differentially associated with different neuropsychiatric syndromes in a large multicentre study.
