Octogenarians constitute the fastest-growing segment within contemporary cardiac surgery, yet precise risk assessment in this age group remains challenging. This study aimed to evaluate EuroSCORE II reliability in octogenarians undergoing isolated coronary surgery and to create an adjustment formula if necessary. All octogenarians who had isolated coronary surgery in Poland from January 2012 to December 2023, recorded in the Polish National Registry of Cardiac Surgical Procedures (KROK registry), were retrospectively assessed.

Renal denervation (RDN), a transcatheter renal sympathetic nerve ablation procedure, is a relatively novel established procedure for the treatment of hypertension, with it being recognized as a third option for hypertension management in the most recent European guidelines, together with pharmacotherapy, for achieving blood pressure targets. Given the relationship between both hypertension and sympathetic overdrive and the development of heart failure (HF), even studies at the dawn of research on RDN explored it as a treatment to overcome diuretic resistance in those patients. As it is now recognized that RDN does not only have organ-specific but also systemic effects, several investigators have aimed to delineate whether renal sympathetic denervation could alter the prognosis, symptoms, and adverse events of HF patients.

The measurement of selected norepinephrine metabolites, such as 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylenglycol (MHPG), and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), in biological matrices-including urine-is of great clinical importance for the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. This fact has forced researchers to evaluate new analytical methodologies for their isolation and preconcentration from biological samples. In this study, the three most popular extraction techniques-liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), and a new 3D-printed system for dispersive solid-phase extraction (3D-DSPE)-were investigated.

Limited research had investigated nutritional status in patients with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) (OMIM 122470, 300590, 300882, 610759, 620568 and 614701). Body composition assessed via bioelectric impedance (BIA) is a particularly under-explored issue. In this cross-sectional study, we hypothesize that body composition imbalance is frequent in CdLS and may be associated with dysphagia.

Liver transplantation (LT) is one of the most effective treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic livers. Neoadjuvant bridging treatment in patients qualifying and listed for LT is advised but is still debatable owing to the low level of evidence. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review to assess the prognostic value of bridging therapy, in terms of radiological and histopathological examination outcomes, for survival after LT.

The histopathological assessment is critical in the comprehensive treatment process for patients diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A detailed and precise specimen characterization is essential to facilitate effective surgeon-pathologist communication. In response to this need, a user-friendly virtual communication protocol utilizing a 3D scanner has been developed.

Physical activity increases the risk of non-contact injuries, mainly affecting muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Genetic factors are recognized as contributing to susceptibility to different types of soft tissue injuries, making this broad condition a complicated multifactorial entity. Understanding genetic predisposition seems to offer the potential for personalized injury prevention and improved recovery strategies.

This study examined the interfacial evolution of individual bile salts (BSs) and their blends with phosphatidylcholine (BS/PC) to simulate the complex behaviour of human bile (HB) during lipolysis at the triglyceride/water interface. Using adsorption and desorption cycles, mimicking exposure to small intestinal fluids, we demonstrate that the interfacial behaviour of real HB can be replicated using simple mixtures of BSs and PC. Interfacial tension (IFT) measurements after lipolysis and desorption showed no significant differences (P > 0.

The standard clinical management of osteomyelitis involves prolonged antibiotic therapy, which frequently necessitates the excision of infected tissues. However, the efficacy of such treatments is increasingly compromised by the rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, underscoring an urgent need for innovative approaches. This study introduces a novel composite material designed to offer dual functionality: robust antimicrobial activity and promotion of bone regeneration.

Purpose: Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is a method of protection against induced ischemia reperfusion injury, and an increasing number of studies showed some of its inconclusive ergogenic effects in sports. RIPC involves short cycles of cuff inflation followed by its deflation which may affect many body systems. While most of the studies focus on single RIPC effects, there is insufficient data regarding training-like repeated RIPC interventions.

An advanced hybrid nanocomposite based on different metals (copper, cobalt, and chromium) decorated with sustainable polysaccharides (gelatin, GLN, and hydroxyethyl cellulose, HEC) was developed. The composite reflects several advantages including a controlled particle size, particle size distribution, along with promising antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Topographical and elemental analyses were carried out using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), demonstrating the formation of trimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) possessing domain sizes of 169 nm and 102 nm assigned to the free nanocomposite (Fcomp) and loaded nanocomposite (Lcomp), respectively.

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy due to the absence of the survival motor neuron 1 () gene. SMA is classified into types 0 through 4 based on the age of symptom onset and the severity of motor function decline. Recent advances in SMA treatment, including nusinersen, onasemnogene abeparvovec, and risdiplam, have significantly improved the prognosis of SMA patients.

Background: Gut microbiota generates a series of bioactive metabolites that can be converted into uremic toxins such as trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), p-cresyl sulfate (pCS), and indoxyl sulfate (IS). The aim of the study was to examine the association between diet and the concentrations of the mentioned gut microbiota-derived uremic toxins.
Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted involving 210 participants: 84 hemodialysis (HD) patients, 44 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, 52 kidney transplant recipients (KTR), and 30 healthy controls.

Magnesium phosphate-based cements are highly regarded for their bioactive properties, making them excellent candidates as bone substitutes. Despite their promising attributes, challenges such as high reaction temperature, limited injectability, and brittleness limit their application. This study introduces a dual-setting biocomposite cement, which encompasses both cement hydration and hydrogel's cross-linking.

Rhodium(III) complexes have gained attention for their anticancer potential. In this study, we investigated a rhodium(III) bipyridylsulfonamide complex () and its ligand () for their effects on breast cancer (SKBr3) and noncancerous mammary cells (HB2). Both compounds significantly reduced oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and mitochondrial function in SKBr3 cells while sparing HB2 cells.
