Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are an experimental class of drug carriers. Alternative sources of EVs are currently being explored to overcome limitations related to their manufacturing from mesenchymal stem cells. In this work, derived EVs were tested as carriers for the widely used chemotherapeutic drug - doxorubicin (DOX).

Article Synopsis
  • The study reveals a significant rise in head and neck cancer (HNC) cases and deaths among the elderly in Poland from 1999 to 2021, particularly in those aged 80 and older.
  • The research analyzed data from the Polish National Cancer Register and applied statistical methods to assess trends and correlations in morbidity and mortality across different age groups.
  • The results indicate an urgent need for specialized cancer care strategies to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for elderly patients, especially for the 80+ demographic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) affects tryptophan (TRP) and its metabolites (kynurenines) in semi-professional long-distance runners after intense exercise.
  • A total of 27 runners were divided into a RIPC group and a placebo (SHAM) group, with blood samples taken at various times to analyze changes in TRP and kynurenines post-exercise.
  • Results showed that the RIPC group had lower levels of certain kynurenines and a higher decrease in TRP after exercise, suggesting RIPC could influence brain health, though more research is necessary.

Background: Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures worldwide. Despite this, access to abortion on demand remains restricted in many countries, including Poland. As a result, many women resort to undergoing the procedure without medical supervision, putting themselves at risk of serious health consequences such as drug poisoning, excessive bleeding, and hypovolemia.

Hypereosinophilic diseases represent a heterogeneous group that poses a significant medical challenge. An increased number of eosinophils in the blood can be a dominant symptom of hematologic diseases, such as myeloid hematopoietic cancers or lymphomas. However, it is more commonly associated with other health conditions, such as allergies, infections, and systemic inflammatory diseases.

This study aimed to compare the effects of manual therapy combined with dry needling (MTDN) to a control group, focusing on the impact on pressure pain threshold (PPT), muscle tone (MT), muscle stiffness (MS), muscle strength, and range of motion in the neck muscles of adult combat sports athletes. A randomized controlled study design was employed, with one group of athletes (n = 15) receiving MTDN intervention, while the other group (n = 15) underwent a control treatment (CG) involving a quasi-needle technique combined with manual therapy. Both groups participated in three sessions, either in the MTDN intervention or the control condition.

De-escalation of dual antiplatelet (DAPT) intensity may be considered in patients with high risk of bleeding after acute coronary syndrome. Some high risk patients after de-escalation may require antithrombotic therapy prolonged over 12 months. With the current guideline recommended strategies, there are some doubts and uncertainties with respect to the transition period.

Article Synopsis
  • Loss-of-function mutations in the CLPB gene result in congenital neutropenia, impairing the differentiation of neutrophil precursor cells, though the underlying mechanism is unclear.
  • In experiments using IL-3-dependent mouse myeloblastic 32Dcl3 cells, researchers found that CLPB knockout led to decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and increased HAX1 aggregates, but did not affect cell proliferation under IL-3.
  • The increased apoptosis of CLPB-deficient cells after IL-3 withdrawal was linked to reactive oxygen species (ROS), with citrate supplementation showing potential to protect these cells by enhancing ROS detoxification through ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY) activity.

Nocturnal blood pressure (BP) shows the highest predictive power for cardiovascular events. However, there is a poor reproducibility of personalized dipping patterns in single individuals. We hypothesize that changes in body position during sleep cause variations in hydrostatic pressure, leading to incorrect BP values and dipping classifications.

l-arginine derivatives (ADMA, SDMA, NMMA) are endogenous inhibitors of nitric oxide (NO֗) production, which is essential in critical brain processes including blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and long-term potentiation (LTP). ADMA and NMMA are degraded by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 1 (DDAH1) and protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) is an emerging epigenetic enzyme that mainly represses transcription of target genes via symmetric dimethylation of arginine residues. There is no data concerning the impact of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu) ligands on this aspect of brain physiology.
